We investigate the effects of new physics scenarios containing a high mass vector resonance on top pair production at the LHC, using the polarization of the produced top. In particular we use kinematic distributions of the secondary lepton coming from top decay, which depends on top polarization, as it has been shown that the angular distribution of the decay lepton is insensitive to the anomalous tbW vertex and hence is a pure probe of new physics in top quark production. Spin sensitive variables involving the decay lepton are used to probe top polarization. Some sensitivity is found for the new couplings of the top.

Potentiometric, spectrophotometric and polarographic evidence has been presented for the formation of mixed hydroxy complexes in coppermonoethanolamine system. A method has been developed for the analysis of Bjerrum formation curves taken in presence of 0·1, 0·2, 0·5 and 1·0 M monoethanolammonium ion with respect to hydroxy complexes. The formation of CuAOH+, CuA2OH+ and CuA3OH+ is shown and the corresponding stability constants are calculated at different concentrations of MEA ion. Curves showing the distribution of pure and hydroxy complexes at various pA values in solutions containing different concentrations of MEA ion have also been given.

Catalytic dehydrogenation of 2-propanol over Cu-SiO2 catalyst was investigated. The undesired side reaction of dehydration can be controlled by a selective catalyst and choice of proper operating conditions. The kinetics of the heterogeneous catalytic reaction can be adequately expressed by a forward first-order and reverse second-order mechanism. The rate-controlling step with chemically pure 2-propanol is single-site surface reaction, while for the technical grade alcohol the adsorption of alcohol is rate-controlling. The static bed data are compared with the fluidized bed dat

One of the major limitations to the application of high-resolution biophysical techniques such as X-crystallography and spectroscopic analyses to structure-function studies of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hop1 protein has been the non-availability of sufficient quantities of functionally active pure protein. This has, indeed, been the case of many proteins, including yeast synaptonemal complex proteins. In this study, we have performed expression screening in Escherichia coli host strains, capable of high-level expression of soluble S. cerevisiae Hop1 protein. A new protocol has been developed for expression and purification of S. cerevisiae Hop1 protein, based on the presence of hexa-histidine tag and double-stranded DNA-Cellulose chromatography. Recombinant S. cerevisiae Hop1 protein was >98% pure and exhibited DNA-binding activity with high-affinity to the Holliday junction. The availability of the recombinant HOP1 expression vector and active Hop1 protein would facilitate structure-function investigations as well as the generation of appropriate truncated and site-directed mutant proteins, respectively. A quantitative structural investigation was carried out on (1-y)PbZrxTi1-xO3-yPbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) where y=0.1 and 0.2 ((1-y)PZT-yPZN). High resolution XRD data have been used for quantitative phase analysis. The nominal compositions were prepared by a two-step low temperature calcining solid-state method. The sintered samples show an average grain size of 1-2 mu m. It is demonstrated that the increase in the concentration of PZN leads to the shift of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT towards the PbZrO3 end member. In the present work, an effort has been made to quantitatively determine the MPB phase contents and to regain the coexistence of tetragonal and monoclinic phases by varying the value of x(i.e. Zr/Ti ratio). The width of the MPB becomes considerably larger for y=0.10 and 0.20 as compared to pure PZT. This is attributed to the considerably lower grain size of our samples resulting from the adopted preparation method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure of copper ammonium oxalate dihydrate (space group P1̃) has been derived from a refinement of the two-dimensional (hk0) and (0kl) x-ray data using the atomic coordinateis of the isomorphous salt CuK 2(C2O4)2.2H2O as the starting point of the analysis. In contrast to the chromium complexes of oxalic acid the C-C bonds in both the two nonequivalent oxalate ions in the unit cell are single bonds (1.58 and 1.61 Å) consistent with the conclusion of Jeffrey and Parry that the carboxyl groups of the oxalate ion are separated by a pure a bond with little or no π conjugation across the molecule. Both the oxalate ions are slightly nonplanar. The copper ions occupy the special positions (0, 0, 0) and 0, 1/2, 0) and their coordination is of the distorted octahedral type with four nearest oxygen neighbors ( ≃ 2 Å) at the corners of a square and two more distant atoms along the octahedral bond direction. The environment of the NH4+ ions consists of eight nearest oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 3 Å.

The particle size and crystallite size of anatase increase markedly in the region of the crystal structure transformation. The unit cell of anatase seems to expand prior to the transformation to rutile. This expansion has been attributed to a displacive transformation of the type defined by Buerger. Smaller particle size and larger surface area seem to favour the transformation. The kinetics of the transformation of anatase prepared by the hydrolysis of titanium sulphate have been studied at different temperatures and are found to be considerably different from the kinetics of the transformation of pure anatase. The transformation becomes immeasurably slow below ∼695 ± 10°C compared to ∼610°C for pure anatase. An induction period is observed in the transformation of anatase obtained from sulphate hydrolysis and the duration decreases with increase in temperature. The activation energy is ∼120 kcal/mole, a value higher than that for the pure anatase-rutile transformation. The results have been interpreted in terms of the relative rates of nucleation and propagation processes. The activation energy for the nucleation process seems to be much larger than for the propagation process. The kinetics of the transformation of anatase samples doped with different amounts of sulphate ion impurity have also been studied and the transformation is found to be progressively decelerated with increase in the impurity concentration. The energy of activation for the transformation appears to increase progressively with increase in impurity concentration.

The significant correlation coefficient between the terrestial heat flow and thermal conductivity computed from the continental heat flow data by Horai and Nur [1]2) may be explained as a natural consequence of terrestrial heat flow through a random medium. The theory predicts a value of 0.40 for the correlation coefficient. A simple statistical test shows that the majority of the computed coefficients belong to the statistical population whose mean is equal to the theoretical correlation coefficient. There are, however, a few observations of unsually high correlation coefficient which cannot be explained by the above hypothesis.

A detailed study of nickel-monoethanolamine complexes has been made employing potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods. The conditions for the formation of mono as well as polynuclear complexes have been investigated by potentiometric method. Evidence is presented for the formation of the following complexes and their stability constants are determined: NiA2+, Ni22+, Ni32+, NiA42+, NiA52+, NiA22+, Ni2A24+ and Ni3A36+. Combining potentiometric data with the spectrophotometric data, absorption spectra of the pure mononuclear complexes NiA2+ to NiA42+ and NiA2+6 have been computed. The absorption spectrum of NiA2+6 has been discussed on the basis of ligand field and molecular orbital theories. The absorption spectra of intermediate complexes have been interpreted on the basis of average ligand field theory. There has been good agreement between the experimental (10,400 cm-1) value of 10 Dq of NiA2+6 and the calculated value of 10 Dq (11,400 cm-1) on the basis of M.O. theory.

Vitamin A, when extracted along with other lipids from sheep liver, had an E1cm.1% value of 14.4, which was raised to 45.57 on removal of the phospholipids by cold acetone. Selective hydrolysis of triglycerides by an extract of acetone-dried sheep pancreas in the presence of HgCl2 as inhibitor of vitamin A esterase, followed by chromatography through alumina gave a product with E1cm.1% value of 276. This on chromatography through magnesium oxide raised the E1cm.1, value to 601.5, representing 64% pure vitamin A ester calculated as palmitate, and the total recovery was 23% of the starting oil. The purified ester preparation, when subjected to reverse-phase chromatography on silicone-impregnated paper, gave a single ultraviolet fluorescent band. The fluorescent band on hydrolysis gave only one fatty acid. This was conclusively identified to be palmitic acid.

Using a pulse method the ultrasonic absorption has been studied in the frequency range of 2 to 10 Mc/s in dilute aqueous solutions of nitrogen tetroxide gas at room temperature. The absorption peaks (αλ vs frequency) observed in this study are attributed to the ionic dissociation reaction of the nitrous acid into its constituent ions. The rate constants of the forward and backward reactions are calculated using the theory of Tabuchi. The variation of the logarithm of the rate constant of the bimolecular ionic reaction, namely, log10 kb, with the square root of ionic strength qualitatively follows Brönsted's theory for ionic reactions in solutions.

The low-temperature plastic flow of alpha-zirconium was studied by employing constantrate tensile tests and differential-stress creep experiments. The activation parameters, enthalpy and area, have been obtained as a function of stress for pure, as well as commercial zirconium. The activation area is independent of grain size and purity and falls to about 9b2 at high stresses. The deformation mechanism below about 700° K is found to be controlled by a single thermally activated process, and not a two-stage activation mechanism. Several dislocation mechanisms are examined and it is concluded that overcoming the Peierls energy humps by the formation of kink pairs in a length of dislocation is the rate-controlling mechanism. The total energy needed to nucleate a double kink is about 0.8 eV in pure zirconium and 1 eV in commercial zirconium
