Risk equations have been developed to assist in determining fitness for work of people with diseases that may cause rapid loss of control. The four equations calculate the frequency of fatal injury to the person with the disease, the frequency of fatal injury to colleagues in the workplace, and the cost of fatal injury and property damage to the employer, it is suggested that the additional risk of fatal injury to the person with the disease should not exceed the fatal injury rate in high-risk industries such as forestry, fishing and mining. it is also suggested that the additional risk of fatal injury to each colleague should be no more than one-tenth of the fatal injury rate due to motor vehicle accidents in the community. Two hypothetical case examples are given, demonstrating the use of the equations. The equations highlight the need to examine the risks associated with individuals, their specific jobs and their workplaces. They also highlight significant uncertainties in the determination of fitness, which perhaps have been underestimated in the past. Wherever possible, redundant defences should be utilized to prevent accidents in the event of sudden incapacity.

Prioritizing areas for conservation requires the use of surrogates for assessing overall patterns of biodiversity. Effective surrogates will reflect general biogeographical patterns and the evolutionary processes that have given rise to these and their efficiency is likely to lie influenced by several factors, including the spatial scale of species turnover and the overall congruence of the biogeographical history. We examine patterns of surrogacy for insects, snails, one family of plants and vertebrates from rainforests of northeast Queensland, an area characterized by high endemicity and an underlying history of climate-induced vicariance. Nearly all taxa provided some level of prediction of the conservation values For others. However, despite an overall correlation of the patterns of species richness and complementarity, the efficiency of surrogacy was highly asymmetric.. snails and insects were strong predictors of conservation priorities for vertebrates, but not vice versa. These results confirm predictions that taxon surrogates can be effective in highly diverse tropical systems where there is a strong history of vicariant biogeography, but also indicate that correlated patterns for species richness and/or complementarity do not guarantee that one taxon will be efficient as a surrogate for another. In our case, the highly diverse and narrowly distributed invertebrates were more efficient as predictors than the less diverse and more broadly distributed vertebrates.

Aerial parts of lettuce plants were grown under natural tropical fluctuating ambient temperatures, but with their roots exposed to two different root-rone temperatures (RZTs): a constant 20 degreesC-RZT and a fluctuating ambient (A-) RZT from 23-40 degreesC, Plants grown at A-RZT showed lower photosynthetic CO2 assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (g(s)), midday leaf relative water content (RWC), and chlorophyll fluorescence ratio F-v/F-m than 20 degreesC-RZT plants on both sunny and cloudy days. Substantial midday depression of A and g(s) occurred on both sunny and cloudy days in both RZT treatments, although F-v/F-m did not vary diurnally on cloudy days. Reciprocal temperature transfer experiments investigated the occurrence and possible causes of stomatal and non-stomatal limitations of photosynthesis. For both temperature transfers, light-saturated stomatal conductance (g(s) (sat)) and photosynthetic CO2 assimilation (A(sat)) were highly correlated with each other and with midday RWC, suggesting that A was limited by water stress-mediated stomatal closure, However, prolonged growth at A-RZT reduced light- and CO2-saturated photosynthetic O-2 evolution (P-max), indicating non-stomatal limitation of photosynthesis. Tight temporal coupling of leaf nitrogen content and P-max during both temperature transfers suggested that decreased nutrient status caused this non-stomatal limitation of photosynthesis.

The principle that alloys are designed to accommodate the manufacture of goods made from them as much as the properties required of them in service has not been widely applied to pressed and sintered P/M aluminium alloys. Most commercial alloys made from mixed elemental blends are identical to standard wrought alloys. Alternatively, alloys can be designed systematically using the phase diagram characteristics of ideal liquid phase sintering systems. This requires consideration of the solubilities of the alloying elements in aluminium, the melting points of the elements, the eutectics they form with aluminium and the nature of the liquid phase. The relative diffusivities are also important. Here we show that Al-Sn, which closely follows these ideal characteristics, has a much stronger sintering response than either Al-Cu or Al-Zn, both of which have at least one non-ideal characteristic. Some materials exhibit a combustion event during mechanical alloying, which results in the rapid transformation of reactants into products, while others show a slow transformation of reactants into products, In this paper, the continuous W + C --> WC reaction is compared to the Ti + C --> TiC combustion reaction. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns is used to show that these particular reactions proceed through different pathways, determined by crystallographic factors of the reactants. When a crystallographic relationship exists between the reactants and the products, such as that between W and WC, the product forms slowly over a period of time. In contrast, insertion of C into the Ti structure is associated with atomic rearrangements within the crowded lattice planes and the subsequent catastrophic failure of the reactant lattices results in combustion to form TiC. A series of metal-matrix composites were formed by extrusion freeform, fabrication of a sinterable aluminum alloy in combination with silicon carbide particles and whiskers, carbon fibers, alumina particles, and hollow flyash cenospheres. Silicon carbide particles were most successful in that the composites retained high density with up to 20 vol% of reinforcement and the strength approximately doubles over the strength of the metal matrix alone. Comparison with simple models suggests that this unexpectedly high degree of reinforcement can be attributed to the concentration of small silicon carbide particles around the larger metal powder. This fabrication method also allows composites to be formed with hollow spheres that cannot be formed by other powder or melt methods.

A new method to extract MOSFET's threshold voltage VT by measurement of the gate-to-substrate capacitance C-gb of the transistor is presented. Unlike existing extraction methods based on I-V data, the measurement of C-gb does not require de drain current to now between drain and source thus eliminating the effects of source and drain series resistance R-S/D, and at the same time, retains a symmetrical potential profile across the channel. Experimental and simulation results on devices with different sizes are presented to justify the proposed method.

A novel bloom of the surf diatom Anaulus australis Drebes et Schultz was observed in subtropical waters off Surfers' Paradise, Queensland, Australia (27 degrees 55'S; 153 degrees 23'E) in early May 2000. This is the lowest latitude in which an Anaulus australis surf diatom bloom has been reported. Nitrogen stable isotope analysis of surf diatoms may indicate anthropogenic nutrient inputs in this environment.

In this paper we study some purely mathematical considerations that arise in a paper of Cooper on the foundations of thermodynamics that was published in this journal. Connections with mathematical utility theory are studied and some errors in Cooper's paper are rectified. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
