Ulkomaisen Suomeen lähetetyn työvoiman työskentely rakennusalalla on lisääntynyt viime vuosina. Ulkomaisen työvoiman käyttöön liittyviä säädöksiä on useissa eri laeissa. Viime vuosina lainsäädäntöä on pyritty muuttamaan paremmin käytännön tarpeita vastaavaksi. Tilaajan asema on määritettävä tapauskohtaisesti.

We present Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the high mass X-ray binary LS I +61˚303, carried out with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Over the 11 hour observing run, performed ~10 days after a radio outburst, the radio source showed a constant flux density, which allowed sensitive imaging of the emission distribution. The structure in the map shows a clear extension to the southeast. Comparing our data with previous VLBI observations we interpret the extension as a collimated radio jet as found in several other X-ray binaries. Assuming that the structure is the result of an expansion that started at the onset of the outburst, we derive an apparent expansion velocity of 0:003 c, which, in the context of Doppler boosting, corresponds to an intrinsic velocity of at least 0:4 c for an ejection close to the line of sight. From the apparent velocity in all available epochs we are able to establish variations in the ejection angle which imply a precessing accretion disk. Finally we point out that LS I +61˚303, like SS 433 and Cygnus X-1, shows evidence for an emission region almostorthogonal to the relativistic jet

Somatization was described 4000 years ago but the pathophysiology of the, phenomenon is unknown. The aim of this investigation was to explore whether central nervous system (CNS) pathology is associated with severe somatization which was operationalized as somatization disorder (SD) and undifferentiated somatoform disorder. The study sample consisted of severely somatizing people who were included into the study after a multi-phase screening procedure in order to exclude psychiatric comorbidities and physical illnesses. Diagnosis of somatization disorder or undifferentiated sofatoform disorder were set according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th ed. (DSM-IV). The first study explored the regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRGlc) in severely somatizing females and found it to be reduced in several regions of the brain compared to healthy controls. The second study observed brain morphology with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on the findings from the first study and showed enlarged caudate nuclei in somatizing women compared to healthy volunteers. The third study investigated temperament factors and brain metabolism, and their association with severe somatization. Low caudate and putamen metabolism, low novelty seeking as well as high harm avoidance were found to be associated with severe somatization in women, reduced caudate metabolism having the strongest association. The last study is a report of man with left-side gradient of multiple symptoms of unknown origin in the body. The examination revealed a hypermetabolic nucleus putamen on the contralateral side. All the main results reported in these four articles are original findings. The results suggest that CNS pathology is involved in the pathophysiology of severe somatization.

Coastal birds are an integral part of coastal ecosystems, which nowadays are subject to severe environmental pressures. Effective measures for the management and conservation of seabirds and their habitats call for insight into their population processes and the factors affecting their distribution and abundance. Central to national and international management and conservation measures is the availability of accurate data and information on bird populations, as well as on environmental trends and on measures taken to solve environmental problems. In this thesis I address different aspects of the occurrence, abundance, population trends and breeding success of waterbirds breeding on the Finnish coast of the Baltic Sea, and discuss the implications of the results for seabird monitoring, management and conservation. In addition, I assess the position and prospects of coastal bird monitoring data, in the processing and dissemination of biodiversity data and information in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other national and international commitments. I show that important factors for seabird habitat selection are island area and elevation, water depth, shore openness, and the composition of island cover habitats. Habitat preferences are species-specific, with certain similarities within species groups. The occurrence of the colonial Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) is partly affected by different habitat characteristics than its abundance. Using long-term bird monitoring data, I show that eutrophication and winter severity have reduced the populations of several Finnish seabird species. A major demographic factor through which environmental changes influence bird populations is breeding success. Breeding success can function as a more rapid indicator of sublethal environmental impacts than population trends, particularly for long-lived and slowbreeding species, and should therefore be included in coastal bird monitoring schemes. Among my target species, local breeding success can be shown to affect the populations of the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), the Eider (Somateria mollissima) and the Goosander (Mergus merganser) after a time lag corresponding to their species-specific recruitment age. For some of the target species, the number of individuals in late summer can be used as an easier and more cost-effective indicator of breeding success than brood counts. My results highlight that the interpretation and application of habitat and population studies require solid background knowledge of the ecology of the target species. In addition, the special characteristics of coastal birds, their habitats, and coastal bird monitoring data have to be considered in the assessment of their distribution and population trends. According to the results, the relationships between the occurrence, abundance and population trends of coastal birds and environmental factors can be quantitatively assessed using multivariate modelling and model selection. Spatial data sets widely available in Finland can be utilised in the calculation of several variables that are relevant to the habitat selection of Finnish coastal species. Concerning some habitat characteristics field work is still required, due to a lack of remotely sensed data or the low resolution of readily available data in relation to the fine scale of the habitat patches in the archipelago. While long-term data sets exist for water quality and weather, the lack of data concerning for instance the food resources of birds hampers more detailed studies of environmental effects on bird populations. Intensive studies of coastal bird species in different archipelago areas should be encouraged. The provision and free delivery of high-quality coastal data concerning bird populations and their habitats would greatly increase the capability of ecological modelling, as well as the management and conservation of coastal environments and communities. International initiatives that promote open spatial data infrastructures and sharing are therefore highly regarded. To function effectively, international information networks, such as the biodiversity Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) under the CBD, need to be rooted at regional and local levels. Attention should also be paid to the processing of data for higher levels of the information hierarchy, so that data are synthesized and developed into high-quality knowledge applicable to management and conservation.

Mixed methods research involves the combined use of quantitative and qualitative methods in the same research study, and it is becoming increasingly important in several scientific areas. The aim of this paper is to review and compare through a mixed methods multiple-case study the application of this methodology in three reputable behavioural science journals: the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Addictive Behaviors and Psicothema. A quantitative analysis was carried out to review all the papers published in these journals during the period 2003-2008 and classify them into two blocks: theoretical and empirical, with the latter being further subdivided into three subtypes (quantitative, qualitative and mixed). A qualitative analysis determined the main characteristics of the mixed methods studies identified, in order to describe in more detail the ways in which the two methods are combined based on their purpose, priority, implementation and research design. From the journals selected, a total of 1.958 articles were analysed, the majority of which corresponded to empirical studies, with only a small number referring to research that used mixed methods. Nonetheless, mixed methods research does appear in all the behavioural science journals studied within the period selected, showing a range of designs, where the sequential equal weight mixed methods research design seems to stand out.

Mixed methods research is becoming increasingly important in several scientific areas. The analysis of prevalence rates is a new line of research that has emerged in mixed methods research, and this methodological approach has only been applied carefully in a handful of journals. The purpose of this article was to analyse the prevalence of mixed methods research in interdisciplinary educational journals. Moreover, the main characteristics of the mixed methods articles identified were examined. This study used a mixed methods approach to analyse these aspects. Specifically, a partially mixed sequential equal status multiple-case study design was applied with a development mixed methods purpose. Three educational journals in different disciplines were reviewed from 2005 to 2010 (Academy of Management Learning and Education, Educational Psychology Review, Journal of the Learning Sciences). The findings show differences among the journals in the prevalence rates and characteristics of the mixed methods studies

The productivity, quality and cost efficiency of welding work are critical for metal industry today. Welding processes must get more effective and this can be done by mechanization and automation. Those systems are always expensive and they have to pay the investment back. In this case it is really important to optimize the needed intelligence and this way needed automation level, so that a company will get the best profit. This intelligence and automation level was earlier classified in several different ways which are not useful for optimizing the process of automation or mechanization of welding. In this study the intelligence of a welding system is defined in a new way to enable the welding system to produce a weld good enough. In this study a new way is developed to classify and select the internal intelligence level of a welding system needed to produce the weld efficiently. This classification contains the possible need of human work and its effect to the weld and its quality but does not exclude any different welding processes or methods. In this study a totally new way is developed to calculate the best optimization for the needed intelligence level in welding. The target of this optimization is the best possible productivity and quality and still an economically optimized solution for several different cases. This new optimizing method is based on grounds of product type, economical productivity, the batch size of products, quality and criteria of usage. Intelligence classification and optimization were never earlier made by grounds of a made product. Now it is possible to find the best type of welding system needed to welddifferent types of products. This calculation process is a universal way for optimizing needed automation or mechanization level when improving productivity of welding. This study helps the industry to improve productivity, quality and cost efficiency of welding workshops.

This study focuses on the phenomenon of customer reference marketing in a business tobusiness (B to B) context. Although customer references are generally considered an important marketing and sales tool, the academic literature has paid surprisingly little attention to the phenomenon. The study suggests that customer references could be viewed as important marketing assets for industrial suppliers, and the ability to build, manage and leverage customer reference portfolios systematically constitutes a relevant marketing capability. The role of customer references is examined in the context of the industrial suppliers' shift towards a solution and project orientation and in the light of the on going changes in the project business. Suppliers in several industry sectors are undergoing a change from traditional equipment manufacturing towards project and solution oriented business. It is argued in this thesis that the high complexity, the project oriented nature and the intangible service elements that characterise many contemporary B to B offerings further increase the role of customer references. The study proposes three mechanisms of customer reference marketing: status transfer, validation through testimonials and the demonstration of experience and prior performance. The study was conducted in the context of Finnish B to B process technology and information technology companies. The empirical data comprises 38 interviews with managers of four case companies, 165 customer reference descriptions gathered from six case companies' Web sites, as well as company internal material. The findings from the case studies show that customer references have various external and internal functions that contribute to the growth and performance of B to B firms. Externally, customer references bring status transfer effects from reputable customers, concretise and demonstrate complex solutions, and provide indirect evidence of experience, previous performance, technological functionality and delivered customer value. They can also be leveraged internally to facilitate organisational learning and training, advance offering development, and motivate personnel. Major reference projects create new business opportunities and can be used as a vehicle for strategic change. The findings of the study shed light on the on going changing orientations in the project business environment, increase understanding of the variety of ways in which customer references can be deployed as marketing assets, and provide a framework of the relevant tasks and activities related to building, managing and leveraging a firm's customer reference portfolio. The findings contribute to the industrial marketing research, to the literature on marketing assets and capabilities and to the literature on projects and solutions. The proposed functions and mechanisms of customer reference marketing bring a more thorough and structured understanding about the essence and characteristics of the phenomenon and give a wide ranging view of the role of customer references as marketing assets for B to B firms. The study suggests several managerial implications for industrial suppliers in order to systematise customer reference marketing efforts.

The results obtained in several yield tests, at an international level (mainly the famous PISA 2003 report, by the OCDE), have raised a multiplicity of performances in order to improve the students' yield regarding problem solving. In this article we set a clear guideline on how problems should be used in Mathematics lessons, not for obtaining better scores in the yield tests but for improving the development of Mathematical thinking in students. From this perspective, the author analyses, through eight reflections, how the concept of problem, transmitted both in the school and from society, influences the students

A historiographical study of Jane Marcet’s role in spreading chemistry knowledge to a wider audience in the 19th century is presented here. Her efforts to spread scientific knowledge were crucial to sharing the most important theories of chemistry among different audiences, particularly women and young people. Through her book, “Conversations on Chemistry,” which was published in several editions from 1806 to 1853, she contributed significantly to chemistry education. Despite controversy over the large number of editions, this text is a strong witness to the active participation of women in science. Her scientific rigor and contribution to narrative strategies in chemistry pedagogy have given Jane Marcet consideration not only as an important woman in the scientific community of England during the first half of the 19th century but also as a central figure in the early development of chemistry diffusion and education.

Nowadays, knowledge management (KM) is important for the success of individuals, organizations, and countries. While comparative study approach of knowledge management is a good way to enlarge peoples‘ understandings of KM, how these processes and practices are different across countries is an interesting research topic. The goal of this study is to conduct a cross-country KM comparison between China and Finland. More specifically, the current status of Chinese and Finnish KM will be studied, and then comparisons will be made in three dimensions: knowledge processes, knowledge management practices, and performance and perceptions of KM. A cross-country KM survey was conducted through a well-designed questionnaire. At the end of the study, current Chinese and Finnish KM findings are presented respectively, and a comparison of KM between the two countries is done. From the comparison, it was found that China and Finland have statistically significant differences in several knowledge processes and KM practices. Some detailed information from the comparison is also illustrated. This research partly filled the theoretical gap in understanding contemporary Chinese KM. The KM comparison between China and Finland provides useful information to KM researchers and practitioners.

In this paper the conductometric titration of propranolol hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulations using silver nitrate as titrant is proposed. The method was based on the formation of an insoluble salt (AgCl(s)) between the chloride of propranolol hydrochloride molecule and Ag(I) ions of the titrant AgNO3. The effect of the PROP-AgNO3 concentrations and the interval of time between the successive additions of the titrant on the shape of the titration curve were studied. The obtained recoveries for four samples ranged from 96.8 to 105%. The proposed method was successfully applied in the determination of propranolol hydrochloride in several pharmaceutical formulations, with results in close agreement at a 95 % confidence level with those obtained using official spectrophotometric method.

Metastases are the major cause of cancer deaths. Tumor cell dissemination from the primary tumor utilizes dysregulated cellular adhesion and upregulated proteolytic degradation of the extracellular matrix for progeny formation in distant organs. Integrins are transmembrane adhesive receptors mediating cellcell and cellmatrix interactions that are crucial for regulating cell migration, invasion, proliferation, and survival. Consequently, increased integrin activity is associated with augmented migration and invasion capacity in several cancer types. Heterodimeric integrins consist of an alpha - and beta-subunit that are held together in a bent conformation when the receptor is inactive, but extension and separation of subdomains is observed during receptor activation. Either inside-out or outside-in activation of receptors is possible through the intracellular molecule binding to an integrin cytoplasmic domain or extracellular ligand association with an integrin ectodomain, respectively. Several regulatory binding partners have been characterized for integrin cytoplasmic beta-domains, but the regulators interacting with the cytoplasmic alpha-domains have remained elusive. In this study, we performed yeast two-hybrid screens to identify novel binding partners for the cytoplasmic integrin alpha-domains. Further examination of two plausible candidates revealed a significant coregulatory role of an integrin alpha-subunit for cellular signaling processes. T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) showed a specific interaction with the cytoplasmic tail of integrin alpha1. This association stimulated TCPTP phosphatase activity, leading to negative regulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling and diminished anchorage-independent growth. Another candidate, mammary-derived growth inhibitor (MDGI), exhibited binding to several different integrin cytoplasmic alpha-tails through a conserved GFFKR sequence. MDGI overexpression in breast cancer cells altered EGFR trafficking and caused a remarkable accumulation of EGFR in the cytoplasm. We further demonstrated in vivo that MDGI expression induced a novel form of anti-EGFR therapy resistance. Moreover, MDGI binding to α-tails retained integrin in an inactive conformation attenuating integrin-mediated adhesion, migration, and invasion. In agreement with these results, sustained MDGI expression in breast cancer patients correlated with an increased 10-year distant disease-free survival. Taken together, the integrin signaling network is far from a complete view and future work will doubtless broaden our understanding further.
