Two bottom sediment cores (BP00-23/7 and BP00-7/6) recovered from the Yenisei transect in the southern Kara Sea are described. Data on their grain size composition, clay and heavy mineral assemblages, and distribution of a large group of chemical elements are presented. Radiocarbon dates based on AMS C-14 method suggest the Holocene age of sediments in the cores. Literature data on physical properties and foraminifers have also been analyzed. The facies affiliation of the lithostratigraphic subdivisions has been unraveled. History of the Yenisei River runoff in the Holocene has been reconstructed on the basis of different indicators.

Sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138 in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean were analyzed for variations in eolian accumulation rate and mean grain-size. Latitudinal and temporal patterns of these parameters showed important changes in the intensity of atmospheric circulation and eolian flux associated with the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and suggested that eolian input parameters could be used to define its paleoposition through time. Modern atmospheric circulation in the equatorial region is weakest in the intertropical convergence zone and increases as the trade winds are approached to the north and south. Thus, the expected spatial pattern of eolian grain size would have the finest material deposited beneath the ITCZ and a coarsening of material in both directions away from this zone. Sediments from ODP Leg 138 show this pattern for much of the Pleistocene and Pliocene but, prior to about 4 Ma, begin to lose the northern coarse component suggesting that the ITCZ was located north of its present position during the late Miocene. Eolian flux records also show a latitudinal pattern of deposition associated with the position of the ITCZ that, similar to eolian grain-size variability, suggests a more northerly position of the ITCZ during the late Miocene. Overall, the regional input of eolian material to the equatorial Pacific has decreased throughout the late Neogene. This reduction in eolian input reflects climatic changes to relatively wetter conditions in the continental eolian source regions beginning during the late Pliocene.

The biostratigraphic distribution and abundance of lower Oligocene to Pleistocene diatoms is documented from Holes 747A, 747B, 748B, 749B, and 751A drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 on the Kerguelen Plateau in the southeast Indian Ocean. The occurrence of middle and upper Eocene diatoms is also documented, but these are rare and occur in discrete intervals. The recovery of several Oligocene to Pleistocene sections with minimal coring gaps, relatively good magnetostratigraphic signatures, and mixed assemblages of both calcareous and siliceous microfossils makes the above four Leg 120 sites important biostratigraphic reference sections for the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. A high-resolution diatom zonation divides the last 36 m.y. into 45 zones and subzones. This zonation is built upon an existing biostratigraphic framework developed over the past 20 yr of Southern Ocean/Antarctic deep-sea coring and drilling. After the recent advances from diatom biostratigraphic studies on sediments from Legs 113, 114, 119, and 120, a zonal framework for the Southern Ocean is beginning to stabilize. The potential age resolution afforded by the high-diversity diatom assemblages in this region ranks among the highest of all fossil groups. In addition to the 46 datum levels that define the diatom zones and subzones, the approximate stratigraphic level, age, and magnetic anomaly correlative of more than 150 other diatom datums are determined or estimated. These total 73 datum levels for the Pliocene-Pleistocene, 67 for the Miocene, and 45 for the Oligocene. Greater stratigraphic resolution is possible as the less common and poorly documented species become better known. This high-resolution diatom stratigraphy, combined with good to moderately good magnetostratigraphic control, led to the recognition of more than 10 intervals where hiatuses dissect the Oligocene-Pleistocene section on the Kerguelen Plateau. Interstitial water samples from Sites 834 through 839, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135 in the backarc Lau basin (Southwestern Pacific), have been analyzed for major elements, manganese, copper, strontium, barium, vanadium, and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic composition values. The concentration-depth profiles of the major chemical components show almost straight concentration gradients at all sites, and seem to reflect slight alteration of volcanic material. However, in the lower part of the sedimentary cover, where volcanogenic material is abundant and where diagenetic minerals occur, systematic decreases in calcium, strontium, manganese, copper, and vanadium concentrations are observed. A downwelling flow of bottom seawater, which affected the diagenetic chemical signature of the interstitial water, is probably responsible for the recorded chemical features. This hypothesis is supported by strontium isotope data obtained from interstitial water samples at Site 835. It is also in accordance with data from heat flow and physical properties.

The monograph has been written on the base of data obtained from samples and materials collected during the 19-th cruise of RV ''Akademik Vernadsky'' to the Northern and Equatorial Indian Ocean. Geological features of the region (stratigraphy, tectonic structure, lithology, distribution of ore-forming components in bottom sediments, petrography of igneous rocks, etc.) are under consideration. Regularities of trace element concentration in Fe-Mn nodules, nodule distribution in bottom sediments, and engineering-geological properties of sediments within the nodule fields have been studied. Much attention is paid to ocean crust rocks. The wide range of ore mineralization (magnetite, chromite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, pentlandite, and other minerals) has been ascertained.

Piston cores from fiords, shelf troughs, and the deep-sea off eastern Baffin Island, N.W.T., Canada, have been sampled for texture and detrital carbonate in the <2 mm fraction. The sediments consist primarily of silty clays usually containing <5% sand. Estimates are made for sediment accumulation (kg/m**2/ka) over the last ca. 10 ka. Three sets, of two cores each, lie on a fiord-shelf transect and thus define variations in sediment accumulation gradients. These continental margin data are compared with cruder estimates of Holocene sediment accumulation at three sites farther offshore in Baffin Bay, Davis Strait and the northern Labrador Sea. Minimum accumulation in a 2 ka interval was 200 kg/m2 with a maximum estimate of 8,800 kg/m2. Detrital carbonate accumulation varies between 0 and 1,300 kg/m**2. Median accumulation for a typical fiord-shelf-deep-sea transect over the last 10 ka have been 10,340, 3493 and 820 kg/m**2. At DSDP Leg, site 645 in central Baffin Bay, the sedimentation rate ranged between 40 and 130 m/Ma (ca. 400 and 1200 kg/m**2/2ka); that is, comparable with the Late Quaternary input into Baffin Bay.

This paper is dedicated to the geochemical studies of two bottom sediment cores that were taken during cruise 28 of the R/V Professor Logachev in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) 16°38'N area in 2006. The chemical compositions of background metalliferous and ore (ore-bearing) carbonate sediments are presented and inter-element correlations are examined. Individual episodes are distinguished in the accumulation history of the ore-bearing and metalliferous sediments on the basis of element factor analysis.

Siwalik paleosol and Bengal Fan sediment samples were analyzed for the abundance and isotopic composition of n-alkanes in order to test for molecular evidence of the expansion of C4 grasslands on the Indian subcontinent. The carbon isotopic compositions of high-molecular-weight alkanes in both the ancient soils and sediments record a shift from low d13C values (ca. -30 per mil) to higher values (ca. -22 per mil) prior to 6 Ma. This shift is similar in magnitude to that recorded by paleosol carbonate and fossil teeth, and is consistent with a relatively rapid transition from dominantly C3 vegetation to an ecosystem dominated by C4 plants typical of semi-arid grasslands. The n-alkane values from our paleosol samples indicate that the isotopic change began as early as 9 Ma, reflecting either a growing contribution of C4 plants to a dominantly C3 biomass or a decrease in water availability to C3 plants. Molecular and isotopic analyses of other compounds, including n-alcohols and low-molecular weight n-alkanes indicate paleosol organic matter contains contributions from a mixture of sources, including vascular plants, algae and/or cyanobacteria and microorganisms. A range of inputs is likewise reflected in the isotopic composition of the total organic carbon from these samples. In addition, the n-alkanes from two samples show little evidence for pedegenic inputs and we suggest the compounds were derived instead from the paleosol's parent materials. We suggest the record of vegetation in ancient terrestrial ecosystems is better reconstructed using isotopic signatures of molecular markers, rather than bulk organic carbon. This approach provides a means of expanding the spatial and temporal records of C4 plant biomass which will help to resolve possible tectonic, climatic or biological controls on the rise of this important component of the terrestrial biosphere.

Titanomagnetites separated from 15 different rock samples (including ocean-floor basalts from DSDP Legs 37, 45 and 46) were analyzed together with whole-rock samples by instrumental neutron-activation analysis for Sc, Cr, Co, Zn, Hf, Ta, Th and the REE La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm, Yb and Lu. In titanomagnetities from ocean-floor basalts and some other rocks, REE are enriched with respect to the whole-rock composition by factors of between 1.5 and 3 for light REE and between 1.0 and 1.9 for heavy REE; that is, REE with larger ionic radii are preferentially incorporated into the magnetite lattice. Three magnetite samples are REE depleted. Their whole-rock samples contain P in appreciable amounts, so apatite, an important REE-accumulating mineral, could have captured REE to some extent. All titanomagnetites show a marked negative Eu anomaly, this is most probably caused by discrimination of Eu(2+) from the magnetite lattice. Co, Zn, Hf and Ta are significantly enriched in magnetites. The distribution behaviour of Sc and Cr is masked chiefly by the crystallization of clinopyroxene and therefore is not easy to estimate. Ulvöspinel contents of about 70% for the titanomagnetites from ocean-floor basalts were estimated from qualitative microprobe analysis. Ulvöspinel contents of all other samples varied in a wide range from 20% to about 90%. No correlation could be observed between this and the REE contents of the magnetites. Ilmenite exsolution lamellae could only be observed in titanomagnetites from a doleritic basalt from Leg 45.

The average total organic carbon (TOC) content obtained after Rock-Eval/TOC analysis of 156 sediment samples from the eight sites cored during Leg 135 is 0.05%. Hence, the TOC content of Leg 135 sediments is extremely low. The organic matter that is present in these samples is probably mostly reworked and oxidized material. Ten sediment samples were selected for extraction and analysis by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Very low amounts of extractable hydrocarbons were obtained and some aspects of the biomarker distributions suggest that these hydrocarbons are not representative of the organic matter indigenous to the samples. A sample of an oil seep from Pili, Tongatapu was also analyzed. The seep is a biodegraded, mature oil that shows many characteristics in common with previously published analyses of oil seeps from Tongatapu. Biomarker evidence indicates that its source is a mature, marine carbonate of probable Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary age. The source rock responsible for the Tongatapu oil seeps remains unknown.
