Crowd induced dynamic loading in large structures, such as gymnasiums or stadiums, is usually modelled as a series of harmonic loads which are defined in terms of their Fourier coefficients. Different values of these Fourier coefficients that were obtained from full scale measurements can be found in codes. Recently, an alternative has been proposed, based on random generation of load time histories that take into account phase lags among individuals inside the crowd. Generally the testing is performed on platforms or structures that can be considered rigid because their natural frequencies are higher than the excitation frequencies associated with crowd loading. In this paper we shall present the testing done on a structure designed to be a gymnasium, which has natural frequencies within that range. In this test the gym slab was instrumented with acceleration sensors and different people jumped on a force plate installed on the floor. Test results have been compared with predictions based on the two abovementioned load modelling alternatives and a new methodology for modelling jumping loads has been proposed in order to reduce the difference between experimental and numerical results at high frequency range.

The latest technology and architectural trends have significantly improved the use of a large variety of glass products in construction which, in function of their own characteristocs, allow to design and calculate structural glass elements under safety conditions. This paper presents the evaluation and analysis of the damping properties of rectangular laminated glass plates of 1.938 m x 0.876 m with different thickness depending on the number of PVB interlayers arranged. By means of numerical simulation and experimental verification, using modal analysis, natural frequencies and damping of the glass plates were calculated, both under free boundary conditions and operational conditions for the impact test equipment used in the experimental program, as the European standard UNE-EN 12600:2003 specifies.

This study analyses the differences between two calculation models for guardrails on building sites that use wooden boards and tubular steel posts. Wood was considered an isotropic material in one model and an orthotropic material in a second model. The elastic constants of the wood were obtained with ultrasound. Frequencies and vibration modes were obtained for both models through linear analysis using the finite element method. The two models were experimentally calibrated through operational modal analysis. The results obtained show that for the three types of wood under analysis, the model which considered them as an orthotropic material fitted the experimental results better than the model which considered them as an isotropic material.

In this paper a dynamic analysis of transnational shells is presented. The general linear shell theory is used in conjunction with additional shallow and curved plate approximations. In order to apply some type of extended Levy solution, the shell is assumed to be limited by a rectangular plan form, with two opposite edges simply supported (gable boundary conditions). First, the shells free vibrations are studied in the usual way, obtaining for each Fourier term the natural frequencies as solutions of a transcendental equation. However, solving these equations arises enormous computational difficulties. This paper deals specifically with this problem, trying to reduce its dimension by a discretization procedure. In the shell dynamic characteristics, namely the mass. The shell mass is lumped along a family of coordinate lines. Therefore, the natural frequencies for each harmonic term can be found from the solution of a typical matrix eigenvalues problem and standard numerical techniques can be applied. The shell response to forced vibrations, particularly to earthquake excitation, can be determined by using conventional procedure either in the time or in the frequency domain. Finally, extending the above procedure, any system of translational shells under dynamic loading can be studied. Then, by using matrix methods, a general computer program is written and applied to some illustrative examples. Numerical results has been obtained in two cases: circular cylindrical shell and box girder bridge.

ABSTRACT Salmonid populations in the Iberian Peninsula (brown trout, Salmo trutta; and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar) are close to the southern limit of their natural ranges, and therefore they are of great importance for the conservation of the species. In the present dissertation, some aspects of spawning and habitat management have been investigated, in order to improve the knowledge on these southern salmonid populations. Brown trout spawning have been studied in the river Castril (Andalusia, southern Spain), and it has been observed that spawning occurs from December until April with the maximum activity in February. This finding represents one of the most belated and protracted spawning periods within the natural range of the species. Furthermore, it is now known that the rest of Andalusian populations show similar (belated and extended) spawning periods. Broad-scale analyses throughout the brown trout natural range showed that latitude partly explained both spawning mean time (R2 = 62.8%) and spawning duration (R2 = 24.4%) by negative relationships: the lower the latitude, the later the spawning time and the longer the spawning period. It is plausible that a long spawning period would be an advantage for survival of trout populations in unpredictable habitats, and thus the following hypothesis has been proposed, which is yet to be tested: spawning duration is longer in unpredictable than in predictable habitats. High rate of redd superimposition observed in the river Castril was not only caused by high density of spawners. Trout females chose specific sites for redd construction instead of randomly dispersing over the suitable spawning habitat. These observations suggest that female spawners have some kind of preference for superimposing redds. Moreover, in limestone streams such as Castril, unused gravels can be very cohesive and hard to dig, and thus redd superimposition may be an advantage for female, because digging may require less energy expenditure in already used redd sites than in cohesive and embedded unused sites. Hence, the following hypothesis has been proposed, which is yet to be tested: females have a higher preference for superimposing redds in streambeds with cohesive and embedded substrates than in rivers with loose gravels. Within the topic of habitat management, two different approaches have been used for physical habitat assessment, in order to quantify the potential change in habitat availability, prior to the actual implementation of proposed habitat measures. Firstly, physical habitat for Atlantic salmon in the river Pas (Cantabria, northern Spain) has been assessed at the microhabitat scale, using the IFIM approach along with a two dimensional hydraulic model (River2D). Proposed habitat enhancement actions have been simulated and potential habitat change has been quantified. Results showed a very small increasing in habitat availability and therefore it is not worth to implement these measures in this stream reach. Secondly, physical habitat for brown trout in the river Tajuña (Guadalajara, central Spain) has been assessed at the mesohabitat scale, using the MesoHABSIM approach. The river Tajuña is currently impacted by surrounding agricultural uses, and thus restoration was designed to mitigate these impacts and to drive the river to a more natural state. Habitat availability after the planned restoration has been quantified, and the results have permitted to identify in which sites the restoration will be more effective.

Operational Modal Analysis consists on estimate the modal parameters of a structure (natural frequencies, damping ratios and modal vectors) from output-only vibration measurements. The modal vectors can be only estimated where a sensor is placed, so when the number of available sensors is lower than the number of tested points, it is usual to perform several tests changing the position of the sensors from one test to the following (multiple setups of sensors): some sensors stay at the same position from setup to setup, and the other sensors change the position until all the tested points are covered. The permanent sensors are then used to merge the mode shape estimated at each setup (or partial modal vectors) into global modal vectors. Traditionally, the partial modal vectors are estimated independently setup by setup, and the global modal vectors are obtained in a postprocess phase. In this work we present two state space models that can be used to process all the recorded setups at the same time, and we also present how these models can be estimated using the maximum likelihood method. The result is that the global mode shape of each mode is obtained automatically, and subsequently, a single value for the natural frequency and damping ratio of the mode is computed. Finally, both models are compared using real measured data.

Pest management practices that rely on pesticides are growing increasingly less effective and environmentally inappropriate in many cases and the search of alternatives is under focus nowadays. Exclusion of pests from the crop by means of pesticide-treated screens can be an eco-friendly method to protect crops, especially if pests are vectors of important diseases. The mesh size of nets is crucial to determine if insects can eventually cross the barrier or exclude them because there is a great variation in insect size depending on the species. Long-lasting insecticide-treated (LLITN) nets, factory pre-treated, have been used since years to fight against mosquitoes vector of malaria and are able to retain their biological efficacy under field for 3 years. In agriculture, treated nets with different insecticides have shown efficacy in controlling some insects and mites, so they seem to be a good tool in helping to solve some pest problems. However, treated nets must be carefully evaluated because can diminish air flow, increase temperature and humidity and decrease light transmission, which may affect plant growth, pests and natural enemies. As biological control is considered a key factor in IPM nowadays, the potential negative effects of treated nets on natural enemies need to be studied carefully. In this work, the effects of a bifentrhin-treated net (3 g/Kg) (supplied by the company Intelligent Insect Control, IIC) on natural enemies of aphids were tested on a cucumber crop in Central Spain in autumn 2011. The crop was sown in 8x6.5 m tunnels divided in 2 sealed compartments with control or treated nets, which were simple yellow netting with 25 mesh (10 x 10 threads/cm2; 1 x 1 mm hole size). Pieces of 2 m high of the treated-net were placed along the lateral sides of one of the two tunnel compartments in each of the 3 available tunnels (replicates); the rest was covered by a commercial untreated net of a similar mesh. The pest, Aphis gossypii Glover (Aphidae), the parasitoid Aphidius colemani (Haliday) (Braconidae) and the predator Adalia bipunctata L. (Coccinellidae) were artificially introduced in the crop. Weekly sampling was done determining the presence or absence of the pest and the natural enemies (NE) in the 42 plants/compartment as well as the number of insects in 11 marked plants. Environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity, UV and PAR radiation) were recorded. Results show that when aphids were artificially released inside the tunnels, neither its number/plant nor their distribution was affected by the treated net. A lack of negative effect of the insecticide-treated net on natural enemies was also observed. Adalia bipunctata did not establish in the crop and only a short term control of aphids was observed one week after release. On the other hand, A. colemani did establish in the crop and a more long-term effect on the numbers of aphids/plant was detected irrespective of the type of net. Chromosomal forms of Anopheles gambiae, given the informal designations Bamako, Mopti, and Savannah, have been recognized by the presence or absence of four paracentric inversions on chromosome 2. Studies of karyotype frequencies at sites where the forms occur in sympatry have led to the suggestion that these forms represent species. We conducted a study of the genetic structure of populations of An. gambiae from two villages in Mali, west Africa. Populations at each site were composed of the Bamako and Mopti forms and the sibling species, Anopheles arabiensis. Karyotypes were determined for each individual mosquito and genotypes at 21 microsatellite loci determined. A number of the microsatellites have been physically mapped to polytene chromosomes, making it possible to select loci based on their position relative to the inversions used to define forms. We found that the chromosomal forms differ at all loci on chromosome 2, but there were few differences for loci on other chromosomes. Geographic variation was small. Gene flow appears to vary among different regions within the genome, being lowest on chromosome 2, probably due to hitchhiking with the inversions. We conclude that the majority of observed genetic divergence between chromosomal forms can be explained by forces that need not involve reproductive isolation, although reproductive isolation is not ruled out. We found low levels of gene flow between the sibling species Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis, similar to estimates based on observed frequencies of hybrid karyotypes in natural populations.

The correlation functions of the fluctuations of vibrational frequencies of azide ions and carbon monoxide in proteins are determined directly from stimulated photon echoes generated with femtosecond infrared pulses. The asymmetric stretching vibration of azide bound to carbonic anhydrase II exhibits a pronounced evolution of its vibrational frequency distribution on the time scale of a few picoseconds, which is attributed to modifications of the ligand structure through interactions with the nearby Thr-199. When azide is bound in hemoglobin, a more complex evolution of the protein structure is required to interchange the different ligand configurations, as evidenced by the much slower relaxation of the frequency distribution in this case. The time evolution of the distribution of frequencies of carbon monoxide bound in hemoglobin occurs on the ≈10-ps time scale and is very nonexponential. The correlation functions of the frequency fluctuations determine the evolution of the protein structure local to the probe and the extent to which the probe can navigate those parts of the energy landscape where the structural configurations are able to modify the local potential energy function of the probe.

Reverse transcription of HIV-1, without detergent or amphipathic peptide-induced permeability of the viral envelope, has been demonstrated to occur in the intact HIV-1 virion. In this report, we demonstrate that the amphipathic domains in the C terminus of the transmembrane glycoprotein (gp41) account for the natural permeability of the HIV-1 envelope to deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, the substrates for DNA polymerization. In addition, nonphysiological deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, such as 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine 5'-triphosphate and 3'-deoxythymidine 5'-triphosphate, can also penetrate the viral envelope, incorporate into, and irreversibly terminate reverse transcripts. As a result, viral infectivity is potently inhibited. Since the lentiviral envelope with these newly demonstrated characteristics can serve as a delivery pathway for anti-reverse transcription agents, we propose a unique strategy to prevent HIV-1 interand, possibly, intrahost transmission.

High ³⁷Ar activity concentration in soil gas is proposed as a key evidence for the detection of underground nuclear explosion by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. However, such a detection is challenged by the natural background of ³⁷Ar in the subsurface, mainly due to Ca activation by cosmic rays. A better understanding and improved capability to predict ³⁷Ar activity concentration in the subsurface and its spatial and temporal variability is thus required. A numerical model integrating ³⁷Ar production and transport in the subsurface is developed, including variable soil water content and water infiltration at the surface. A parameterized equation for ³⁷Ar production in the first 15 m below the surface is studied, taking into account the major production reactions and the moderation effect of soil water content. Using sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification, a realistic and comprehensive probability distribution of natural ³⁷Ar activity concentrations in soil gas is proposed, including the effects of water infiltration. Site location and soil composition are identified as the parameters allowing for a most effective reduction of the possible range of ³⁷Ar activity concentrations. The influence of soil water content on ³⁷Ar production is shown to be negligible to first order, while ³⁷Ar activity concentration in soil gas and its temporal variability appear to be strongly influenced by transient water infiltration events. These results will be used as a basis for practical CTBTO concepts of operation during an OSI.

The development of the ecosystem approach and models for the management of ocean marine resources requires easy access to standard validated datasets of historical catch data for the main exploited species. They are used to measure the impact of biomass removal by fisheries and to evaluate the models skills, while the use of standard dataset facilitates models inter-comparison. North Atlantic albacore tuna is exploited all year round by longline and in summer and autumn by surface fisheries and fishery statistics compiled by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Catch and effort with geographical coordinates at monthly spatial resolution of 1° or 5° squares were extracted for this species with a careful definition of fisheries and data screening. In total, thirteen fisheries were defined for the period 1956-2010, with fishing gears longline, troll, mid-water trawl and bait fishing. However, the spatialized catch effort data available in ICCAT database represent a fraction of the entire total catch. Length frequencies of catch were also extracted according to the definition of fisheries above for the period 1956-2010 with a quarterly temporal resolution and spatial resolutions varying from 1°x 1° to 10°x 20°. The resolution used to measure the fish also varies with size-bins of 1, 2 or 5 cm (Fork Length). The screening of data allowed detecting inconsistencies with a relatively large number of samples larger than 150 cm while all studies on the growth of albacore suggest that fish rarely grow up over 130 cm. Therefore, a threshold value of 130 cm has been arbitrarily fixed and all length frequency data above this value removed from the original data set.
