The CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS) seeks to reduce poverty and improve food security for many small-scale fishers and farmers who are dependent on aquatic agriculture systems by partnering with local, national and international partners to achieve large-scale development impact. This study on promising practices in food security and nutrition assistance to vulnerable households in the Tonle Sap region forms part of the preliminary research that informs AAS work in the highly productive Mekong Delta and Tonle Sap Lake floodplain. The study aims to identify and learn from promising practices that have had a positive impact on the food security and nutrition of vulnerable households in the Tonle Sap region.

The successful utilization of an array of silicon on insulator complementary metal oxide semiconductor (SOICMOS) micro thermal shear stress sensors for flow measurements at macro-scale is demonstrated. The sensors use CMOS aluminum metallization as the sensing material and are embedded in low thermal conductivity silicon oxide membranes. They have been fabricated using a commercial 1 μm SOI-CMOS process and a post-CMOS DRIE back etch. The sensors with two different sizes were evaluated. The small sensors (18.5 ×18.5 μm2 sensing area on 266 × 266 μm2 oxide membrane) have an ultra low power (100 °C temperature rise at 6mW) and a small time constant of only 5.46 μs which corresponds to a cut-off frequency of 122 kHz. The large sensors (130 × 130 μm2 sensing area on 500 × 500 μm2 membrane) have a time constant of 9.82 μs (cut-off frequency of 67.9 kHz). The sensors' performance has proven to be robust under transonic and supersonic flow conditions. Also, they have successfully identified laminar, separated, transitional and turbulent boundary layers in a low speed flow. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper we examine triggering in a simple linearly-stable thermoacoustic system using techniques from flow instability and optimal control. Firstly, for a noiseless system, we find the initial states that have highest energy growth over given times and from given energies. Secondly, by varying the initial energy, we find the lowest energy that just triggers to a stable periodic solution. We show that the corresponding initial state grows first towards an unstable periodic solution and, from there, to the stable periodic solution. This exploits linear transient growth, which arises due to nonnormality in the governing equations and is directly analogous to bypass transition to turbulence. Thirdly, we introduce noise that has similar spectral characteristics to this initial state. We show that, when triggering from low noise levels, the system grows to high amplitude self-sustained oscillations by first growing towards the unstable periodic solution of the noiseless system. This helps to explain the experimental observation that linearly-stable systems can trigger to self-sustained oscillations even with low background noise. © 2010 by University of Cambridge. The nuclear RNA binding protein, FCA, promotes Arabidopsis reproductive development. FCA contains a WW protein interaction domain that is essential for FCA function. We have identified FY as a protein partner for this domain. FY belongs to a highly conserved group of eukaryotic proteins represented in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the RNA 3' end-processing factor, Pfs2p. FY regulates RNA 3' end processing in Arabidopsis as evidenced through its role in FCA regulation. FCA expression is autoregulated through the use of different polyadenylation sites within the FCA pre-mRNA, and the FCA/FY interaction is required for efficient selection of the promoter-proximal polyadenylation site. The FCA/FY interaction is also required for the downregulation of the floral repressor FLC. We propose that FCA controls 3' end formation of specific transcripts and that in higher eukaryotes, proteins homologous to FY may have evolved as sites of association for regulators of RNA 3' end processing.

Four dry pelleted feeds containing 20%, 30%, 40% and 45% protein were formulated incorporating casein as the main source of protein for use in carp nutrition studies. The caloric content in all the feeds was maintained constant. The method of processing is described. The formulated diets were tested for water stability. This test has revealed that the diet containing 20%, 30% and 40% protein had better stability than that containing 45% protein. This was due to the relatively higher fat content in the former three diets. However, all the feeds were sufficiently stable at the end of one hour in which time carps are known to utilise supplementary diets.
