Preliminary studies of hydrothermally altered massive basalts formed at the fast-spreading Mendoza Rise and recovered from DSDP Holes 597B and 597C indicate the presence of three secondary mineral assemblages which formed in the following order: (1) trioctahedral chlorite and talc, (2) goethite and smectite, and (3) calcite and celadonite. The sequential precipitation of these mineral assemblages denotes high water:rock ratios and time-varying conditions of temperature (early >200°C to late <30°C) and state of oxidation (early nonoxidative to late oxidative). A decrease in the relative proportion of oxidative mineral assemblages with depth to 70 m in Site 597 basement indicates a zone of oxidative alteration that became shallower with time as the deeper, more constricted fracture systems were filled by secondary mineralization. In this report we present the first results of the K-Ar dating of celadonite formation age; celadonite formation reflects end-stage hydrothermal alteration in Site 597 basement. Three celadonite dates obtained from Site 597 samples include 13.1 ± 0.3 m.y. from 17 m basement depth (Hole 597B), 19.9 ± 0.4 m.y. from 18 m basement depth (Hole 597C), and 19.3 ± 1.6 m.y. from 60 m basement depth (Hole 597C). The age of host rock crystallization (28.6 m.y.) and the K-Ar dates of celadonite formation establish that hydrothermal alteration in the upper 70 m of Site 597 basement continued for at least 10 m.y. and possibly as long as 16 m.y. after basalt crystallization at the ridge crest. Assuming a half-spreading rate of 55 km/m.y., we calculate that hydrothermal circulation was active in shallow basement at a distance of at least 550 km off ridge crest and possibly as far as 1000 km off ridge crest.

Tropical planktonic foraminifers occur throughout the sequences at all sites of Leg 85, and the standard planktonic foraminiferal zonation of Blow (1969) is applicable to most of the recovered sequences. However, the abundance and state of preservation of foraminifers decline markedly in certain intervals because of the effects of dissolution. Although siliceous microfossils studied on this leg indicate recovery of nearly complete records for the Pleistocene to Oligocene interval, the planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy is interrupted by strongly dissolved sections at all sites. Particularly, faunas assignable to Zone N7 (early Miocene) and Zone N15-16 (early late Miocene) are almost totally unrecognizable throughout the eastern equatorial Pacific. Well-preserved and diverse planktonic foraminifers occur in the lower middle Miocene, where the evolutionary developments of Orbulina universa d'Orbigny and Globorotalia fohsi Cushman and Ellisor are well represented. The Orbulina first appearance datum is observed to be nearly coincident with the last occurrence level of the diatom Annellus californicus Tempère, thus .establishing an age of 15 Ma for this datum by using the paleomagnetic calibration of the diatom datum. Moderately well-preserved late Eocene planktonic foraminifers occur in the carbonate sediments immediately overlying the basalt basement at Sites 573 and 574. The Eocene-Oligocene faunal transition, however, is masked at both sites by an intercalation of metalliferous layers containing no planktonic foraminifers.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides continuous measurements made with a WETLabs Eco-FL sensor mounted on the flowthrough system between June 4th, 2011 and March 30th, 2012. Data was recorded approximately every 10s. Two issues affected the data: 1. Periods when the water 0.2µm filtered water were used as blanks and 2. Periods where fluorescence was affected by non-photochemical quenching (NPQ, chlorophyll fluorescence is reduced when cells are exposed to light, e.g. Falkowski and Raven, 1997). Median data and their standard deviation were binned to 5min bins with period of light/dark indicated by an added variable (so that NPQ affected data could be neglected if the user so chooses). Data was first calibrated using HPLC data collected on the Tara (there were 36 data within 30min of each other). Fewer were available when there was no evident NPQ and the resulting scale factor was 0.0106 mg Chl m-3/count. To increase the calibration match-ups we used the AC-S data which provided a robust estimate of Chlorophyll (e.g. Boss et al., 2013). Scale factor computed over a much larger range of values than HPLC was 0.0088 mg Chl m-3/count (compared to 0.0079 mg Chl m-3/count based on manufacturer). In the archived data the fluorometer data is merged with the TSG, raw data is provided as well as manufacturer calibration constants, blank computed from filtered measurements and chlorophyll calibrated using the AC-S. The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides continuous measurements made with a FRRF instrument, operating in a flow-through mode during the 2009-2012 part of the expedition. It operates by exciting chlorophyll fluorescence using a series of short flashes of controlled energy and time intervals (Kolber et al, 1998). The fluorescence transients produced by this excitation signal were analysed in real-time to provide estimates of abundance of photosynthetic pigments, the photosynthetic yields (Fv/Fm), the functional absorption cross section (a proxy for efficiency of photosynthetic energy acquisition), the kinetics of photosynthetic electron transport between Photosystem II and Photosystem I, and the size of the PQ pool. These parameters were measured at excitation wavelength of 445 nm, 470nm, 505 nm, and 535 nm, allowing to assess the presence and the photosynthetic performance of different phytoplankton taxa based on the spectral composition of their light harvesting pigments. The FRRF-derived photosynthetic characteristics were used to calculate the initial slope, the half saturation, and the maximum level of Photosynthesis vs Irradiance relationship. FRRF data were acquired continuously, at 1-minute time intervals.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides continuous measurements made with an Aquatic Laser Fluorescence Analyzer (ALFA) (Chekalyuk et al., 2014), connected in-line to the TARA flow through system during 2013. The ALFA instrument provides dual-wavelength excitation (405 and 514 nm) of laser-stimulated emission (LSE) for spectral and temporal analysis. It offers in vivo fluorescence assessments of phytoplankton pigments, biomass, photosynthetic yield (Fv/Fm), phycobiliprotein (PBP)-containing phytoplankton groups, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (Chekalyuk and Hafez, 2008; 2013A). Spectral deconvolution (SDC) is used to assess the overlapped spectral bands of aquatic fluorescence constituents and water Raman scattering (R). The Fv/Fm measurements are spectrally corrected for non-chlorophyll fluorescence background produced by CDOM and other constituents (Chekalyuk and Hafez, 2008). The sensor was cleaned weakly following the manufacturer recommended protocol.

The future economic growth for India is likely to result in rapid and accelerated surge in energy demand, with expected shortages in terms of supply. Many of its current policies and strategies are aimed at the improvement and possible maximization of energy production from the renewable sector. It is also clear that while energy conservation and energy efficiency can make an important contribution, renewable energies will be essential to the solution and are likely to play an increasingly important role for providing enhanced energy access, reducing consumption of fossil fuels, and helping India pursue its low-carbon progressive pathway. However, most of the states in India, like the northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir, have experienced an energy crisis over a sustained period of time and the government both at center and state level has to embark upon with these pressing issues in a more sustainable manner and accordingly initiate various renewable energy projects within these states. This paper will provide a broad-spectrum view about the energy situation within Jammu and Kashmir and will highlight the current policies along with future strategies for the optimal utilization of renewable energy resources.

El principal objetivo de esta tesis es dotar a los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAVs, por sus siglas en inglés) de una fuente de información adicional basada en visión. Esta fuente de información proviene de cámaras ubicadas a bordo de los vehículos o en el suelo. Con ella se busca que los UAVs realicen tareas de aterrizaje o inspección guiados por visión, especialmente en aquellas situaciones en las que no haya disponibilidad de estimar la posición del vehículo con base en GPS, cuando las estimaciones de GPS no tengan la suficiente precisión requerida por las tareas a realizar, o cuando restricciones de carga de pago impidan añadir sensores a bordo de los vehículos. Esta tesis trata con tres de las principales áreas de la visión por computador: seguimiento visual y estimación visual de la pose (posición y orientación), que a su vez constituyen la base de la tercera, denominada control servo visual, que en nuestra aplicación se enfoca en el empleo de información visual para controlar los UAVs. Al respecto, esta tesis se ocupa de presentar propuestas novedosas que permitan solucionar problemas relativos al seguimiento de objetos mediante cámaras ubicadas a bordo de los UAVs, se ocupa de la estimación de la pose de los UAVs basada en información visual obtenida por cámaras ubicadas en el suelo o a bordo, y también se ocupa de la aplicación de las técnicas propuestas para solucionar diferentes problemas, como aquellos concernientes al seguimiento visual para tareas de reabastecimiento autónomo en vuelo o al aterrizaje basado en visión, entre otros. Las diversas técnicas de visión por computador presentadas en esta tesis se proponen con el fin de solucionar dificultades que suelen presentarse cuando se realizan tareas basadas en visión con UAVs, como las relativas a la obtención, en tiempo real, de estimaciones robustas, o como problemas generados por vibraciones. Los algoritmos propuestos en esta tesis han sido probados con información de imágenes reales obtenidas realizando pruebas on-line y off-line. Diversos mecanismos de evaluación han sido empleados con el propósito de analizar el desempeño de los algoritmos propuestos, entre los que se incluyen datos simulados, imágenes de vuelos reales, estimaciones precisas de posición empleando el sistema VICON y comparaciones con algoritmos del estado del arte. Los resultados obtenidos indican que los algoritmos de visión por computador propuestos tienen un desempeño que es comparable e incluso mejor al de algoritmos que se encuentran en el estado del arte. Los algoritmos propuestos permiten la obtención de estimaciones robustas en tiempo real, lo cual permite su uso en tareas de control visual. El desempeño de estos algoritmos es apropiado para las exigencias de las distintas aplicaciones examinadas: reabastecimiento autónomo en vuelo, aterrizaje y estimación del estado del UAV. Abstract The main objective of this thesis is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with an additional vision-based source of information extracted by cameras located either on-board or on the ground, in order to allow UAVs to develop visually guided tasks, such as landing or inspection, especially in situations where GPS information is not available, where GPS-based position estimation is not accurate enough for the task to develop, or where payload restrictions do not allow the incorporation of additional sensors on-board. This thesis covers three of the main computer vision areas: visual tracking and visual pose estimation, which are the bases the third one called visual servoing, which, in this work, focuses on using visual information to control UAVs. In this sense, the thesis focuses on presenting novel solutions for solving the tracking problem of objects when using cameras on-board UAVs, on estimating the pose of the UAVs based on the visual information collected by cameras located either on the ground or on-board, and also focuses on applying these proposed techniques for solving different problems, such as visual tracking for aerial refuelling or vision-based landing, among others. The different computer vision techniques presented in this thesis are proposed to solve some of the frequently problems found when addressing vision-based tasks in UAVs, such as obtaining robust vision-based estimations at real-time frame rates, and problems caused by vibrations, or 3D motion. All the proposed algorithms have been tested with real-image data in on-line and off-line tests. Different evaluation mechanisms have been used to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithms, such as simulated data, images from real-flight tests, publicly available datasets, manually generated ground truth data, accurate position estimations using a VICON system and a robotic cell, and comparison with state of the art algorithms. Results show that the proposed computer vision algorithms obtain performances that are comparable to, or even better than, state of the art algorithms, obtaining robust estimations at real-time frame rates. This proves that the proposed techniques are fast enough for vision-based control tasks. Therefore, the performance of the proposed vision algorithms has shown to be of a standard appropriate to the different explored applications: aerial refuelling and landing, and state estimation. It is noteworthy that they have low computational overheads for vision systems.

Nanoflow electrospray ionization has been used to introduce intact Escherichia coli ribosomes into the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Mass spectra of remarkable quality result from a partial, but selective, dissociation of the particles within the mass spectrometer. Peaks in the spectra have been assigned to individual ribosomal proteins and to noncovalent complexes of up to five component proteins. The pattern of dissociation correlates strongly with predicted features of ribosomal protein–protein and protein–RNA interactions. The spectra allow the dynamics and state of folding of specific proteins to be investigated in the context of the intact ribosome. This study demonstrates a potentially general strategy to probe interactions within complex biological assemblies.

Hearing underlies our ability to locate sound sources in the environment, our appreciation of music, and our ability to communicate. Participants in the National Academy of Sciences colloquium on Auditory Neuroscience: Development, Transduction, and Integration presented research results bearing on four key issues in auditory research. How does the complex inner ear develop? How does the cochlea transduce sounds into electrical signals? How does the brain's ability to compute the location of a sound source develop? How does the forebrain analyze complex sounds, particularly species-specific communications? This article provides an introduction to the papers stemming from the meeting.

We study a simple antiplane fault of finite length embedded in a homogeneous isotropic elastic solid to understand the origin of seismic source heterogeneity in the presence of nonlinear rate- and state-dependent friction. All the mechanical properties of the medium and friction are assumed homogeneous. Friction includes a characteristic length that is longer than the grid size so that our models have a well-defined continuum limit. Starting from a heterogeneous initial stress distribution, we apply a slowly increasing uniform stress load far from the fault and we simulate the seismicity for a few 1000 events. The style of seismicity produced by this model is determined by a control parameter associated with the degree of rate dependence of friction. For classical friction models with rate-independent friction, no complexity appears and seismicity is perfectly periodic. For weakly rate-dependent friction, large ruptures are still periodic, but small seismicity becomes increasingly nonstationary. When friction is highly rate-dependent, seismicity becomes nonperiodic and ruptures of all sizes occur inside the fault. Highly rate-dependent friction destabilizes the healing process producing premature healing of slip and partial stress drop. Partial stress drop produces large variations in the state of stress that in turn produce earthquakes of different sizes. Similar results have been found by other authors using the Burridge and Knopoff model. We conjecture that all models in which static stress drop is only a fraction of the dynamic stress drop produce stress heterogeneity.

The scholarship on illuminated initials is substantial, yet there is a significant absence of information when discussing the initials found in music manuscripts specifically. In this paper, I endeavor to supplement the current scholarship by focusing my research on music manuscripts produced in Italy between 1250 and 1500 A.D. in order to provide examples of the relationships between image, music, and text in the context of use. I use mainly iconographic research methods, though a considerable amount of background information is reliant on the research of other authors in the field of medieval philosophy and theology. Through my research I have concluded that the use of illuminated initials in medieval Italian music manuscripts enhances the function of the manuscript by providing another layer of understanding which audience members could use to aid them in their meditation, prayer, and in the performance of the music.

The objective of this paper is to provide an analysis of the potential and obstacles to the development of geothermal energy resources in Colorado. Geothermal energy is the only renewable resource that can provide base-load electricity. While Colorado has significant geothermal energy potential, there are no such power plants. Layers of federal and state laws and regulations represent one barrier to further geothermal development. Transmission constraints represent another major barrier. High exploration and construction costs along with high-risk profiles for geothermal projects form another major barrier. Perceived barriers such as misunderstanding the impacts, risks, and benefits of geothermal energy hinder further development. Recommendations are provided to help overcome these obstacles.

Water in sufficient quantities throughout the Colorado Front Range is becoming increasingly limited. This paper examines the consequences for continued unsustainable use of water for communities of the Denver metropolitan area. This paper also looks at the effect that water law in the West has for otherwise optimum distributions of water. In addition, four regional and state water studies are reviewed for their contribution to sustainable water. Finally, the Final Environmental Impact Statement of the Rueter-Hess dam and reservoir project in Parker, Colorado is explored. Key findings conclude that the Rueter-Hess project may not, by itself, provide sustainable water for Parker; but the project will create incentive and opportunity for communities throughout the region to address the question of sustainable water.

This paper tests the existence of ‘reference dependence’ and ‘loss aversion’ in students’ academic performance. Accordingly, achieving a worse than expected academic performance would have a much stronger effect on students’ (dis)satisfaction than obtaining a better than expected grade. Although loss aversion is a well-established finding, some authors have demonstrated that it can be moderated – diminished, to be precise–. Within this line of research, we also examine whether the students’ emotional response (satisfaction/dissatisfaction) to their performance can be moderated by different musical stimuli. We design an experiment through which we test loss aversion in students’ performance with three conditions: ‘classical music’, ‘heavy musicand ‘no music’. The empirical application supports the reference-dependence and loss aversion hypotheses (significant at p < 0.05), and the musical stimuli do have an influence on the students’ state of satisfaction with the grades (at p < 0.05). Analyzing students’ perceptions is vital to find the way they process information. Particularly, knowing the elements that can favour not only the academic performance of students but also their attitude towards certain results is fundamental. This study demonstrates that musical stimuli can modify the perceptions of a certain academic result: the effects of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ surprises are higher or lower, not only in function of the size of these surprises, but also according to the musical stimulus received.
