It has long been stated that the K(+)-Cl(-) cotransporters (KCCs) are activated during cell swelling through dephosphorylation of their cytoplasmic domains by a protein phosphatase (PP) but that other enzymes are involved by targeting this PP or the KCCs directly. To date, however, the role of signaling intermediates in KCC regulation has been deduced from indirect evidence rather than in vitro phosphorylation studies, and examined after simulation of ion transport through cell swelling or N-ethylmaleimide treatment. In this study, the oocyte expression system was used to examine the effects of changes in cell volume (C(VOL)) and intracellular [Cl(-)] ([Cl(-)](i)) on the activity and phosphorylation levels (P(LEV)) of KCC4, and determine whether these effects are mediated by PP1 or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)-sensitive effectors. We found that (1) low [Cl(-)](i) or low C(VOL) leads to decreased activity but increased P(LEV), (2) high C(VOL) leads to increased activity but no decrease in P(LEV) and (3) calyculin A (Cal A) or PMA treatment leads to decreased activity but no increase in P(LEV). Thus, we have shown for the first time that one of the KCCs can be regulated through direct phosphorylation, that changes in [Cl(-)](i) or C(VOL) modify the activity of signaling enzymes at carrier sites, and that the effectors directly involved do not include a Cal A-sensitive PP in contrast to the widely held view. The molecular and ionic composition of vapor over erbium tribromide sublimed from the Knudsen effusion cell and the open surface of a single crystal was studied by high-temperature mass spectrometry. The partial pressures of ErBr3 and Er2Br6 molecules in saturated vapor and the ratio between their sublimation coefficients under free vaporization conditions were determined. The enthalpies and activation energies of sublimation of ErBr3 crystals in the form of monomers and dimers were calculated. The emission of and Er2 was recorded in studies of ionic sublimation in both modes. The enthalpies of formation of gas molecules and ions were determined.

An approach for the determination of atomization energies based on the extrapolated difference technique in the framework of Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry is proposed. Its essence is the use of thermodynamic data for the determination of the appearance energy of fragment ions of a reference and a special mathematical treatment of the ionization efficiency functions. The advantages of this approach are demonstrated for the cases of incongruently vaporizing lanthanide bromides that suffer from decomposition or disproportionation at high temperatures. The atomization energies for SmBr2 (7.78±0.12 eV), EuBr2 (7.51±0.11 eV), YbBr2 (7.25±0.13 eV), SmBr3 (11.09±0.10 eV), and YbBr3 (10.23±0.09 eV) molecules have been determined for the first time.

INTRODUCTION Rhythm disturbances in children with structurally normal hearts are usually associated with abnormalities in cardiac ion channels. The phenotypic expression of these abnormalities ("channelopathies") includes: long and short QT syndromes, Brugada syndrome, congenital sick sinus syndrome, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, Lènegre-Lev disease, and/or different degrees of cardiac conduction disease. METHODS The study group consisted of three male patients with sick sinus syndrome, intraventricular conduction disease, and monomorphic sustained ventricular tachycardia. Clinical data and results of electrocardiography, Holter monitoring, electrophysiology, and echocardiography are described. RESULTS In all patients, the ECG during sinus rhythm showed right bundle branch block and long QT intervals. First-degree AV block was documented in two subjects, and J point elevation in one. A pacemaker was implanted in all cases due to symptomatic bradycardia (sick sinus syndrome). Atrial tachyarryhthmias were observed in two patients. The common characteristic ventricular arrhythmia was a monomorphic sustained ventricular tachycardia, inducible with ventricular stimulation and sensitive to lidocaine. In one patient, radiofrequency catheter ablation was successfully performed. No structural abnormalities were found in echocardiography in the study group. CONCLUSION Common clinical and ECG features suggest a common pathophysiology in this group of patients with congenital severe electrical disease.

The gas phase equilibria Ba + LnX = BaX + Ln (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb; X = Cl, Br, I) were investigated by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry using a low energy of ionizing electrons to avoid fragmentation processes. The BaX molecules were used as references with well-established bond energies. The atomization enthalpies ΔatH0° of the LnX molecules were determined to be 427 ± 9 (SmCl), 409 ± 9 (EuCl), 366 ± 9 (YbCl), 360 ± 10 (SmBr), 356 ± 13 (EuBr), 316 ± 9 (YbBr), 317 ± 10 (SmI), 293 ± 10 (EuI), and 283 ± 10 (YbI) kJ·mol−1.
