Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the incorporation of meta-amino benzoic acid in the middle of a helix forming hexapeptide sequence such as in peptide I Boc-Ile(1)-Aib(2)-Val(3)-m-ABA(4)-Ile(5)-Aib(6)-Leu(7)-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino isobutyric acid: m-ABA: meta-amino benzoic acid) breaks the helix propagation to produce a turn-linker-turn (T-L-T) foldamer in the solid state. In the crystalline state two conformational isomers of peptide I self-assemble in antiparallel fashion through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and aromatic pi-pi interactions to form a molecular duplex. The duplexes are further interconnected through intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form a layer of peptides. The layers are stacked one on top of the other through van der Waals interactions to form hydrophilic channels filled with solvent methanol. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several novel compounds with the non-linear optical chromophore 2-amino-5-nitropyridine (2A5NP) and Keggin polyoxoanions (alpha-isomers), having the general formula (2A5NP)(m)H-n[XM12O40]center dot xH(2)O, M = Mo, W, were synthesised. Compounds were obtained with X = P, n = 3, m = 3 and 4 and X = Si, n = m = 4 ( x = 2 - 6). Thus, for each of the anions [PMo12O40](3-) and [PW12O40](3-) two different compounds were obtained, with the same anion and organic counterpart but with a different stoichiometric ratio. These presented different charge transfer properties and thermal stability. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of (2A5NP)(4)H-3[PMo12O40]center dot 2.5H(2)O center dot 0.5C(2)H(5)OH showed that the water solvent molecules and the organic chromophores are assembled via infinite one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonds with formation of open channels, which accommodate [ PMo12O40] 3- and ethanol solvent molecules.

A new 3-D zinc phosphate, [C5N2H14][Zn-2(PO3(OH))(3)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions in the presence of 1-methylpiperazine. The structure, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 293 K (RMM = 520.9, orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1); a = 10.0517(2) &ANGS;, b = 10.4293(2) &ANGS; and c = 14.9050(5) &ANGS;; V = 1562.52 &ANGS;(3); Z = 4; R(F) = 2.60%, wR(F) = 2.93%), consists of vertex linked ZnO4 and PO3(OH) tetrahedra assembled into (4.8) net sheets which in turn are linked through further PO3(OH) units to generate a 3-D framework. 1-Methylpiperazinium cations reside within the 3-D channel system, held in place by a strong network of hydrogen bonds. The (4.8) net sheets occur in a number of zeolite structures e.g. ABW and GIS and related zinc phosphate phases. © 2004 Academie des sciences. Published by Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

The coadsorption of water and preadsorbed oxygen on Ru{0001) was studied by synchrotron-based high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A dramatic change was observed in the interaction of water with oxygen between low and high oxygen precoverages. Low oxygen coverages below 0.18 ML induce partial dissociation, which leads to an adsorbed layer of H2O and OH. Around half the oxygen atoms take part in this reaction. All OH recombines upon heating to 200 K and desorbs together with H2O. Oxygen coverages between 0.20 and 0.50 ML inhibit dissociation, instead a highly stable intact water species is observed, which desorbs at 220 K. This species is significantly more stable than intact water on the clean surface. The stabilization is most likely due to the formation of hydrogen bonds with neighboring oxygen atoms. For intermediate oxygen coverages around 0.18 ML, the dissociation behavior depends on the preparation conditions, which points toward possible mechanisms and pathways for partial dissociation of water on Ru{0001}.

The structure of gold cyanide, AuCN, has been determined at 10 and 300 K using total neutron diffraction. The structure consists of infinite -Au-(CN)-Au-(CN)-Au-(CN)- linear chains, hexagonally packed, with the gold atoms in sheets. The Au-C and Au-N bond lengths are found to be identical, with d(Au-C/N) = 1.9703(5) Angstrom at 300 K. This work supersedes a previous study, by others, which used Rietveld analysis of neutron Bragg diffraction in isolation, and found these bonds to have significantly different lengths (Deltad = 0.24 Angstrom) at 300 K. The total correlation function, T(r), at 10 and 300 K, has been modeled using information derived from total diffraction. The broadening of inter- and intrachain correlations differs markedly due to random displacements of the chains in the direction of the chain axes. This is a consequence of the relatively weak bonding between the chains. An explanation for the negative thermal expansion in the c-direction, which occurs between 10 and 300 K, is presented.

Acridine-4-carboxamides form a class of known DNA mono-intercalating agents that exhibit cytotoxic activity against tumour cell lines due to their ability to inhibit topoisomerases. Previous studies of bis-acridine derivatives have yielded equivocal results regarding the minimum length of linker necessary between the two acridine chromophores to allow bis-intercalation of duplex DNA. We report here the 1.7 angstrom resolution X-ray crystal structure of a six-carbon-linked bis(acridine-4-carboxamide) ligand bound to d(CGTACG)(2) molecules by non-covalent duplex cross-linking. The asymmetric unit consists of one DNA duplex containing an intercalated acridine-4-carboxamide chromophore at each of the two CG steps. The other half of each ligand is bound to another DNA molecule in a symmetry-related manner, with the alkyl linker threading through the minor grooves. The two crystallographically independent ligand molecules adopt distinct side chain interactions, forming hydrogen bonds to either O6 or N7 on the major groove face of guanine, in contrast to the semi-disordered state of mono-intercalators bound to the same DNA molecule. The complex described here provides the first structural evidence for the non-covalent cross-linking of DNA by a small molecule ligand and suggests a possible explanation for the inconsistent behaviour of six-carbon linked bis-acridines in previous assays of DNA bis-intercalation.

The kinetics of the photodimerisation reactions of the 2- and 4-β-halogeno-derivatives of trans-cinnamic acid (where the halogen is fluorine, chlorine or bromine) have been investigated by infrared microspectroscopy. It is found that none of the reactions proceed to 100% yield. This is in line with a reaction mechanism developed by Wernick and his co-workers that postulates the formation of isolated monomers within the solid, which cannot react. β-4-Bromo and β-4-chloro-trans-cinnamic acids show approximately first order kinetics, although in both cases the reaction accelerates somewhat as it proceeds. First order kinetics is explained in terms of a reaction between one excited- and one ground-state monomer molecule, while the acceleration of the reaction implies that it is promoted as defects are formed within the crystal. By contrast β-2-chloro-trans-cinnamic acid shows a strongly accelerating reaction which models closely to the contracting cube equation. β-2-Fluoro- and β-4-fluoro-trans-cinnamic acids show a close match to first order kinetics. The 4-fluoro-derivative, however, shows a reaction that proceeds via a structural intermediate. The difference in behaviour between the 2-fluoro- and 4-fluoro-derivative may be due to different C–HF hydrogen bonds observed within these single-crystalline starting materials.

Three tripeptides Boc-Phe-Aib-Val-OMe (1), Boc-Leu-Aib-p-NA-NO2 (2) and Boc-Pro-Aib-m-NA-NO2 (3) (Aib: alpha-aminoisobutyric acid; p- and m-NA: para- and meta-nitroaniline) have been designed by incorporating aromatic rings to study the self-assembly and fibril formation. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that all the peptides adopt turn-like structures that are self-assembled through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions to create layers of beta-sheets. Solvent dependent NMR titration and CD studies show that the turn structures of the peptides also exist in the solution phase. The field emission scanning electron microscopic (FE-SEM) images of the peptides in the solid state reveal fibrillar structures of flat morphology that are formed through beta-sheet mediated self-assembly of the preorganized turn building blocks.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and solvent dependent H-1 NMR titrations reveal that a set of four tetrapeptides with general formula Boc-Xx(1)-Aib(2)-Yy(3)-Zz(4)-OMe, where Xx, Yy and Zz are coded L- amino acids, adopt equivalent conformations that can be described as overlapping double turn conformations stabilized by two 4 -> 1 intramolecular hydrogen bonds between Yy(3)-NH and Boc C=O and Zz(4)-NH and Xx(1)C=O. In the crystalline state, the double turn structures are packed in head-to-tail fashion through intermolecular hydrogen bonds to create supramolecular helical structures. Field emission scanning electron microscopic (FE-SEM) images of the tetrapeptides in the solid state reveal that they can form flat tape-like structures. The results establish that synthetic Aib containing supramolecular helices can form highly ordered self-aggregated amyloid plaque like human amylin.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the three designed tripeptides Boc-Leu-Aib-m-NA-NO2 (I), Boc-Phe-Aib-m-NA-NO2 (II) and Boc-Pro-Aib-m-ABA-OMe (III) (Aib, -aminoisobutyric acid; m-NA, m-nitroaniline; m-ABA, m-aminobenzoic acid; Boc, t-butyloxycarbonyl) containing aromatic rings in the backbones adopt -turn structures that are self-assembled through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions to create layers of -sheets. Solvent-dependent NMR titration and CD studies show that the -turn structures of the peptides also exist in the solution phase. The field emission scanning electron microscopic and transmission electron microscopic images of the peptides in the solid state reveal fibrillar structures of flat morphology that are formed through -sheet mediated self-assembly of the preorganised -turn building blocks.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic properties of a new cyano-bridged one-dimensional iron (III)-gadolinium (III) compound, trans-[Gd(o-phen)(2)(H2O)(2)(mu-CN)(2)Fe(CN)(4)], - 2no-phen (o-phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been described. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic P (1) over bar space group with the following unit cell parameters: a = 10.538(14) angstrom, b = 12.004(14) angstrom, c = 20.61(2) angstrom, alpha = 92.41(1)degrees, beta = 92.76(1)degrees, gamma = 11 2.72(1)degrees, and Z = 2. In this complex, each gadolinium (III) is coordinated to two nitrile nitrogens of the CN groups coming from two different ferricyanides, the mutually trans cyanides of each of which links another different Gd-III to create -NC-Fe(CN)(4)-CN-Gd-NC- type 1-D chain structure. The one-dimensional chains are self-assembled in two-dimensions via weak C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds. Both the variable-temperature (2-300 K, 0.01 T and 0.8 T) and variable-field (0-50 000 Gauss, 2 K) magnetic measurements reveal the existence of very weak interaction in this molecule. The temperature dependence of the susceptibilities has been analyzed using a model for a chain of alternating classic (7/2) and quantum (1/2) spins. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two new iron thioantimonates, [Fe(en)(3)](2)Sb2S5 (.) 0.55H(2)O (1) and [Fe(en)(3)](2)Sb4S8 (2). were synthesised under solvothermal conditions from the reactions of Sb2S3, FeCl2 and S in the presence of ethylenediamine at 413 and 438 K, respectively. The products were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and SQUID magnetometry. Compound 1 is unusual in containing isolated Sb2S54- anions formed from two corner-sharing SbS33- trigonal pyramids. These units are arranged in rippled layers, 4 A apart, parallel to the bc-plane. Octahedrally coordinated [Fe(en)(3)](2+) cations lie in depressions within these anionic layers. In compound (2), repeated corner linking of SbS33- trigonal pyramids generates SbS2- chains, which may be considered as a polymerised form of the Sb2S54- anions in 1. The SbS2- chains are separated by [Fe(en)(3)](2+) cations. In both compounds, there is an extensive network of hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen atoms of the ethylenediamine ligands and the sulfur atoms of the anions and, in the case of 1, the uncoordinated water molecule. Structural studies of metal complexes of five ditopic hexaazamacrocycles containing two pyridine rings ([n] py(2)N(4) n = 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26) have been carried out. The synthesis of macrocycles [22]- to [26]- py(2)N(4) are also reported. The protonation constants of the last three compounds and the stability constants of their complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ were determined at 25 degreesC in 0.10 mol dm(-3) KNO3 in aqueous solution. Our results with [22] py(2)N(4) show significant differences from those described previously, while [24] py(2)N(4) has not been studied before and [ 26] py2N4 is a new compound. Mononuclear and dinuclear complexes of the divalent metal ions studied with [ 22]- to [26]- py(2)N(4) were found in solution. The stability constants for the ML complexes of the three ligands follow the Irving - Williams order: NiL2+ < CuL2+ >> ZnL2+ > PbL2+, however for the dinuclear complexes the values for Pb2+ complexes are higher than the corresponding values for the Ni2+ and the Zn2+ complexes. The X-ray single crystal structures of the supramolecular aggregates [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4))(H2O)(4)][Cu(H2O)(6)](SO4)(3) . 3H(2)O ( 1) and [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4))(CH3CN)(4)][Ni([20] py(2)N(4))](2)(ClO4)(8) . H2O (2), which are composed of homodinuclear [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4)])(H2O)(4)](4+) ( 1a) and [Cu-2([20] py(2)N(4)])(CH3CN))(4)](4+) (2a), and mononuclear species, [Cu(H2O)(6)](2+) (1b) and [Ni([20] py(2)N(4))](2+) ( 2b), respectively, assembled by an extensive network of hydrogen bonds, are also reported. In both homodinuclear complexes the copper centres are located at the end of the macrocycle and display distorted square pyramidal coordination environments with the basal plane defined by three consecutive nitrogen donors and one solvent molecule, water in 1a and acetonitrile in 2a. The macrocycle adopts a concertina-type conformation leading to the formation of macrocyclic cavities with the two copper centres separated by intramolecular distances of 5.526(1) and 5.508(7) Angstrom in 1a and 2a, respectively. The mononuclear complex [Ni([20] py(2)N(4)])](2+) displays a distorted octahedral co-ordination environment with the macrocycle wrapping the metal centre in a helical shape. EPR spectroscopy of the copper complexes indicated the presence of mono- and dinuclear species.

A highly efficient process for oxidative degradation of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids in hydrogen peroxide/acetic acid aqueous medium assisted by ultrasonic chemical irradiation is, for the first time, described. It is shown that more than 93% of the 1,3-dialkylimidazolium cation with the corresponding Cl-, Br-, BF4- and PF6- counter-anions at a concentration of 2.5 mM can be degraded at 50 degrees C within 12 h while at 72 h the conversions approach 99%. A tentative mechanism for the degradation of these ILs is for the first time proposed through a detailed kinetic analysis of several characteristic transients and/or immediate products, which are identified during the ILs degradation using GC-MS. The results clearly indicate that three hydrogen atoms in the imidazolium ring are the first sites preferably oxidized, followed by cleavage of the alkyl groups attached to the N atoms from the ring. The nature of the alkyl chain length on the imidazolium ring and the type of counter anion do not seem to affect the degradation process. Further, selective fragmentations of C-N bonds of the imidazolium or derived ring lead to ring opening, forming degraded intermediates. It is also shown that acetoxyacetic acid and biurea are the final kinetically stable degraded products from the ILs under the degradation conditions.

Reaction of [M(NCCH3)(4)][PF6] (M = Ag, Cu) with the S2P2Me4 ligand in dichloromethane solution led to substitution of all the nitrile ligands by two molecules of the sulfur ligand, affording the new species [Ag(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (1) and [Cu(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (2). The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. showing the expected tetrahedral coordination around each metal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the different geometries and energies of the free and coordinated ligand, and provided a very good reproduction of the experimental structures, both for Ag and Cu. The lengths of the S=P bonds are barely affected by coordination, indicating that the pi bond is not important in binding to the metal. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
