National Therapy Research Strategy The Expert Group Report on Various Health Professionals (2000) recommended that the Therapy Advisory Unit in the Department of Health and Children once established, take a lead role in determining how best to improve the quality of therapy services. The Therapy Advisory Unit was established in 2004 and advises the Minister on six therapy professions including; Dietetics, Orthoptics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry/Chiropody and Speech and Language Therapy. Laboratory diagnosis of Schistosomiasis in areas of low transmission: a review of a line of research

After 57 years of successful control of schistosomiasis in Venezuela, the prevalence and intensity of infection have declined. Approximately 80% of the individuals eliminate less than 100 eggs/g of stools, therefore morbidity is mild and the majority are asymptomatic. The sensitivity of Kato-Katz decreases to approximately 60%. Available serological methods for the detection of circulating antigens only reach a 70% of sensitivity. Tests based on the detection of antibodies by immunoenzymatic assays have been improved. The circumoval precipitine test has shown a high sensitivity (97%), specificity (100%), and correlation with oviposition, being considered the best confirmatory diagnostic test. Additionally to the classical immunoenzymatic assays, the development of the alkaline phosphatase immunoassay, allowed to reach a 100% specificity with an 89% sensitivity. Recently, we have developed a modified ELISA in which the soluble egg antigen is treated with sodium metaperiodate (SMP-ELISA) in order to eliminate the glycosilated epitopes responsible for the false positive reactions. The specificity and sensitivity reaches 97% and 99%, respectively. Synthetic peptides from the excretory-secretory enzymes, cathepsin B (Sm31) legumain (Sm32) and cathepsin D (Sm45), have been synthesized. The combination of two peptides derived from the Sm31 have been evaluated, reaching a sensitivity of 96% when analyzed independently and with a 100% specificity. Antibodies raised in rabbits against peptides derived from the Sm31 and Sm32 are currently evaluated in two different antigen-capture-based assays. The development of a simple, cheap and reliable test that correlates with parasite activity is a major goal.

The purpose of this overviews to set the scene so as to assist with a fuller understanding of the Action Plan. It begins by outlining the purpose and objectives of the Action Plan. This is followed by the identificaton of the changes that the Action Plan will bring about over its time frame. The overview concludes by elaborating the structure and philosophy of the Action Plan.

In November 2009 the Government published an Action Plan for Health Research. The Plan was prepared by the Health Research Group following a commitment set out in Building Ireland’s Smart Economy (December 2008). The Action Plan, which was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, provides the lead on national priorities and resource allocation in health research. The Action Plan was prepared to prioritise a programme of actions essential to creating a health research system which supports outstanding individuals, working in world class facilities and conducting leading edge research focused on the needs of patients and the public. The HRG is committed to measuring the success of the Action Plan by the extent to which it meets these deliverables by 2013. One year on, this report reviews the progress being made to implement the Plan. Â

Notre étude consiste en une recherche longitudinale pour laquelle une cohorte d'élèves a été suivie depuis la Grande Section de l'école maternelle française (élèves de 5-6 ans) jusqu'au Cours Élémentaire 1re année de l'école élémentaire française (élèves de 7-8 ans) dans des situations ordinaires de classe. À ces niveaux scolaires, l'un des principaux objectifs du curriculum est l'apprentissage de la lecture. Nous considérons que l'élève construit les compétences de lecture à acquérir, i.e. les compétences caractérisant son développement potentiel, en s'appuyant sur les compétences caractérisant son développement actuel (Vygotski, 1934/1997). Lorsqu'il apprend à lire, l'élève a à sa disposition des moyens sémiotiques relatifs à la connaissance des objets et leurs usages, ainsi qu'aux gestes et leur signification (Moro & Rodriguez, 2005), ce que nous appelons globalement la matérialité. En conséquence, dans cette recherche, nous faisons l'hypothèse que ces premières habiletés relatives à la matérialité, constituent une ressource dans les situations d'enseignement- apprentissage de la lecture. Nous réalisons une étude de cas dont le recueil des données, à caractère ethnographique, est constitué de moments de classe enregistrés en vidéo, et ce, quatre fois par année scolaire. Ces douze enregistrements vidéo sont complétés par deux entretiens semi-directifs et un entretien d'auto- confrontation ; ils sont aussi mis en lien avec les Instructions officielles (programmes scolaires). L'analyse est à la fois macrogénétique et microgénétique. Pour chaque observation, concernant l'analyse macrogénétique, nous réalisons le synopsis à partir duquel nous sélectionnons des épisodes significatifs porteurs de matérialité. Les épisodes significatifs sont constitués des événements remarquables dont les analyses microgénétiques nécessitent l'utilisation d'outils, à savoir les tableaux des matérialités et les photogrammes. Notre étude montre que la matérialité permet aux élèves de devenir lecteurs et que les formes de cette matérialité changent en fonction de l'avancée des acquisitions des élèves et des dimensions de la lecture (code et compréhension) à apprendre. - Our research consists of a longitudinal study in which one group of pupils in ordinary classroom situations has been followed from the top level of French pre-elementary school (5- to 6 year-old pupils) to the second level of French primary school (7- to 8 year-old pupils). For these three school grades, one of the main objectives in the curriculum is learning to read. We consider that pupils build their new reading skills, i.e. the skills characterizing their potential development, by relying on skills characterizing their actual development (Vygotski, 1934/1997). When learning to read, pupils yet have at their disposal semiotic abilities related to knowledge both of material objects and their uses, and of basic gestures and their meaning (Moro & Rodriguez, 2005), all of this we sum up under the term of materiality. Consequently, in our research, we make the hypothesis that the children's basic abilities related to materiality constitute a resource in teaching-learning situations. We have chosen to carry out a case study. The data collected consist of videos of class sequences carried out four times a year for three years. These twelve videos are supplemented by two semi- structured interviews with the teacher, one "self-confronting" interview in which the teacher is brought to discuss her actions and by the analysis of the ministry's school curricula. Our analysis is both macrogenetic and microgenetic. For each teaching sequence, on the level of macrogenetic analysis, we have made up the synopsis from which we have selected significant episodes in terms of materiality. The significant episodes are composed of remarkable events the microgenetic analysis of which requires the use of tools such as materiality boards and photograms. Our study shows that materiality enables pupils to develop reading skills and that the forms that materiality takes on change according to the pupils' acquisition progress and the aspects of reading (code and comprehension) still to be learned.

Dementia is a progressive condition that largely affects older people, impacting on their memory, language, ability to communicate, mood and personality. The course of the illness may be gradual and sometimes subtle, as is classically the case in Alzheimerâ?Ts disease. While dementia is a medical condition, recent insights from the psychosocial, sociopolitical and public health perspectives have focused attention on the human, social and economic implications of the disease.  Click here to download PDF 2.7mb

The Research Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland (Department of Health and Children, 2003) was a response to the Commission on Nursing's (Government of Ireland, 1998: p114) suggestion that a national strategy be developed to guide and support the emerging need for the professions of nursing and midwifery to develop a research base as a fundamental to practice. The Commission itself had found a dearth of published Irish nursing and midwifery research (Government of Ireland, 1998; Condell, 1998) due to a lack of policy direction and funding availability. Purpose: to assess the trends of self-reported prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CV RFs: hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes) and their management for period 1992 to 2007 in the Swiss population. Methods: four National health interview surveys conducted between 1992 and 2007 in representative samples of the Swiss population (63,782 subjects overall). Self-reported CV RFs prevalence, treatment and controllevels were computed after weighting. Weights were calculated by raking ratio such that the marginal distribution of the weighted totals conforms to the marginal distribution of the targeted population. Multivariate analysis adjusted on age, sex, education, nationality and SMI was conducted using logistic regression. Results: prevalence of ail CV RFs increased between 1992 and 2007, see table. Although the self-reported prevalence of treatment among subjects with CV RFs increased, and this was confirmed by multivariate analysis: OR for hypocholesterolaemic treatment relative to 1992: 0.64 [0.52-0.78]; 1.39 [1.18-1.65] and 2.00 [1.69-2.36] for 1997, 2002 and 2007, respectively. Still, in 2007, circa 40% of hypertensive, 60% of dyslipidaemic and 50% of diabetic subjects weren't treated. Conversely, an adequate control of CV RFs was reported by treated subjects, with an increase during the study period. This increase was confirmed by multivariate analysis (not shown). Conclusion: the self-reported prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes increased between 1992 and 2007 in the Swiss population. Despite a good control of treated subjects, still a significant percentage of subjects with CV RFs are not treated.

In its fifth decade of existence, the construct of schizotypy is recapturing the early scientific interest it attracted when Paul E. Meehl (1920-2003), who coined the term, pioneered the field of schizotypy research. The International Lemanic Workshop on Schizotypy, hosted at the University of Geneva in December 2013, recently offered an opportunity to address some of the fundamental questions in contemporary schizotypy research and situate the construct in the greater scheme of future scientific projects on schizophrenia and psychological health research. What kind of knowledge has schizotypy research provided in furthering our understanding of schizophrenia? What types of questions can schizotypy research tackle, and which are the conceptual and methodological frameworks to address them? How will schizotypy research contribute to future scientific endeavors? The International Lemanic Workshop brought together leading experts in the field around the tasks of articulating the essential findings in schizotypy research, as well as providing some key insights and guidance to face scientific challenges of the future. The current supplement contains 8 position articles, 4 research articles, and 1 invited commentary that outline the state of the art in schizotypy research today

Paleoparasitology in the Old World has mainly concerned the study of latrine sediments and coprolites collected from mummified bodies or archaeological strata, mostly preserved by natural conditions. Human parasites recovered include cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes. The well preserved conditions of helminth eggs allowed paleoepidemiological approaches taking into account the number of eggs found by archaeological stratum. Tentatively, sanitation conditions were assessed for each archaeological period.
