Most of the inverters have an isolation transformer which prevents or limits fault current between AC and DC circuits under most fault conditions. If the transformer is excluded from the system, it would increase the PV system efficiency and decrease the size of its installations, which will lead to a lower cost for the whole investment. Thus, elimination of the transformer has to be considered carefully because a galvanic connection appears between the PV arrays and the ground in the absence of an isolation transformer. The galvanic connection causes the stray capacitance between the PV arrays structure and the ground to produce a leakage current. In this paper, a review of full bridge topology with bipolar and unipolar scheme and half bridge topology carried out in regard leakage current.in addition, HERIC and H5 topologies are simulated and leakage current in these topologies are evaluated.

Screening of a Thermus thermophilus genomic library led to the identification of a homologue of the ylmE gene. ylmE is highly conserved in widely divergent organisms from prokaryotes to mammals, suggesting an important, albeit currently unknown, cellular function. The 633 bp gene has a GC content of 69.2% overall and 90% in the third nucleotide position, while the gene product is predicted to be a soluble cytoplasmic protein of 23441 Da. It belongs to a family of conserved proteins of unknown function and exhibits amino acid identities ranging from 45% to 28% to the Aquifex aeolicus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae family members, respectively. We speculate that the gene product may be involved in a cellular stress response in T. thermophilus.

Since their introduction to the toad-free Australian continent cane toads (Bufo marinus) have caused a dramatic increase in naïve varanid mortality when these large lizards attempt to feed on this toxic amphibian. In contrast Asian–African varanids, which have coevolved with toads, are resistant to toad toxin. Toad toxins, such as Bufalin target the H1-H2 domain of the α1 subunit of the sodium-potassium-ATPase enzyme. Sequencing of this domain revealed identical nucleotide sequences in four Asian as well as in three African varanids, and identical sequences in all 11 Australian varanids. However, compared to the Asian–African varanids, the Australian varanids showed four-base-pair substitutions, resulting in the alteration in three of the 12 amino acids representing the H1-H2 domain. The phenotypic effect of the substitutions was investigated in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells stably transfected with the Australian and the Asian–African H1-H2 domains. The transfections resulted in an approximate 3000-fold reduction in resistance to Bufalin in the Australian HEK293 cells compared to the Asian–African HEK293 cells, demonstrating the critical role of this minor mutation in providing Bufalin resistance. Our study hence presents a clear link between genotype and phenotype, a critical step in understanding the evolution of phenotypic diversity.

Wind power generation is growing rapidly. However, maintaining the wind turbine connection to grid is a real challenge. Recent grid codes require wind turbines to maintain connected to the grid even during fault conditions which increases concerns about its sensitivity to external faults. So, researchers have given attention to investigating the impact of various external faults, and grid disturbances such as voltage sag and short circuit faults, on the fault ride through (FRT) capability of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). However, no attention has been given to the impact of internal faults on the dynamic performance of the machine when the fault occurs within the voltage source converters (VSCs) that interface the DFIG with the grid. This paper investigates the impact of the rotor side converter (RSC) IGBT flashover fault on the common coupling (PCC) reactive power and the FRT is proposed. The DFIG compliance with numerous and recently released FRT grid codes under the studied fault, with and without the STATCOM are examined and compared. Furthermore, the capability of a proposed controller to bring the voltage profile at the point of PCC to the nominal steady-state level; maintain the unity power factor operation; and, maintain the connection of the wind turbine to the grid are examined

A key requirement of modern steels – the combination of high strength and high deformability – can best be achieved by enabling a local adaptation of the microstructure during deformation. A local hardening is most efficiently obtained by a modification of the stacking sequence of atomic layers, resulting in the formation of twins or martensite. Combining ab initio calculations with in situ transmission electron microscopy, we show that the ability of a material to incorporate such stacking faults depends on its overall chemical composition and, importantly, the local composition near the defect, which is controlled by nanodiffusion. Specifically, the role of carbon for the stacking fault energy in high-Mn steels is investigated. Consequences for the long-term mechanical properties and the characterisation of these materials are discussed.

As a renewable alternative to fish oil, microbial-derived omega-3-fatty acids can be potential nutritional supplements. This study reported the isolation of novel oleaginous marine microbes from the Victorian marine environment capable of producing omega-3-fatty acids and other bio-actives. Fermentation strategies using low cost substrates improved omega-3-oils production in selected isolates.

A new methodology is reported for designing functional observers to detect actuator faults of a class of time-delay systems where the matrix pair (A, C) is not observable. First, a generalised state transformation is used to transform the system into new coordinates where the delay term associated with the state vector is injected into the system's output and input. Then, a minimum-order functional observer is designed to construct a residual function that can trigger system faults. The finding is significant as it is now possible to detect faults of time-delay systems where the pair (A, C) is not required to be observable. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2014.
