In this article a study of the fracture characteristics of Co66Fe4Mo2Si16B12 amorphous ribbon in the as-quenched state and after relaxation is presented. In the as-quenched state, the morphology of the crack surface shows a 'vein pattern' structure that corresponds to a large amount of plastic flow. After relaxation the surface morphology of the crack shows that when the temperature of the thermal annealing increases the plastic flow involved in the crack decreases. In the as-quenched state dynamic fracture characteristics (crack branching and stress wave induced crack) have been observed. These dynamic characteristics have not been observed in the relaxed samples but in the samples annealed at 250 °C for 20 min apart from the main crack, a crack along the width of the ribbon has been observed. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. This chapter focuses on relationships between plastic deformation structures and mechanical properties in metals and alloys deforming by dislocation glide. We start by summarizing plastic deformation processes, then look at the fundamental mechanisms of plastic deformation and explore how deformation structures evolve. We then turn to experimental techniques for characterization which have allowed deformation microstructures to be quantified in terms of common structural parameters. The microstructural evolution has been described over many length scales and analyzed theoretically based on general principles. The deformation microstructures are related to work hardening stages. Finally we identify correlations between a wide range of microstructural features and mechanical properties, particularly flow stress, and use experimental observations to illustrate their inter-relationships.

It is known that bimesogenic liquid crystals exhibit a marked "odd-even" effect in the flexoelastic ratio (the effective flexoelectric coefficient to the average elastic coefficient), with the ratio being higher for the "odd-spaced" bimesogens (those with an odd number of alkyl groups in the spacer chain) than their neighboring even-spaced counterparts. To determine the contribution of each property to the flexoelastic ratio, we present experimental results on the flexoelectric and elastic coefficients of two homologous nonsymmetric bimesogens which possess odd and even alkyl spacers. Our results show that, although there are differences in the flexoelectric coefficients, there are substantially larger differences in the effective elastic coefficient. Specifically, the odd bimesogen is found to have both a low splay elastic coefficient and a very low bend elastic coefficient which, when combined, results in a significantly lower effective elastic coefficient and consequently a higher flexoelastic ratio.

We report the use of near-field electrospinning (NFES) as a route to fabricate composite electrodes. Electrodes made of composite fibers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in polyethylene oxide (PEO) are formed via liquid deposition, with precise control over their configuration. The electromechanical properties of free-standing fibers and fibers deposited on elastic substrates are studied in detail. In particular, we examine the elastic deformation limit of the resulting free-standing fibers and find, similarly to bulk PEO composites, that the plastic deformation onset is below 2% of tensile strain. In comparison, the apparent deformation limit is much improved when the fibers are integrated onto a stretchable, elastic substrate. It is hoped that the NFES fabrication protocol presented here can provide a platform to direct-write polymeric electrodes, and to integrate both stiff and soft electrodes onto a variety of polymeric substrates.

This work is concerned with the characteristics of the impact force produced when two randomly vibrating elastic bodies collide with each other, or when a single randomly vibrating elastic body collides with a stop. The impact condition includes a non-linear spring, which may represent, for example, a Hertzian contact, and in the case of a single body, closed form approximate expressions are derived for the duration and magnitude of the impact force and for the maximum deceleration at the impact point. For the case of two impacting bodies, a set of algebraic equations are derived which can be solved numerically to yield the quantities of interest. The approach is applied to a beam impacting a stop, a plate impacting a stop, and to two impacting beams, and in each case a comparison is made with detailed numerical simulations. Aspects of the statistics of impact velocity are also considered, including the probability that the impact velocity will exceed a specified value within a certain time. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The dynamic compressive response of a sandwich plate with a metallic corrugated core is predicted. The back face of the sandwich plate is held fixed whereas the front face is subjected to a uniform velocity, thereby compressing the core. Finite element analysis is performed to investigate the role of material inertia, strain hardening and strain rate hardening upon the dynamic collapse of the corrugated core. Three classes of collapse mode are identified as a function of impact velocity: (i) a three-hinge plastic buckling mode of wavelength equal to the strut length, similar to the quasi-static mode, (ii) a 'buckle-wave' regime involving inertia-mediated plastic buckling of wavelength less than that of the strut length, and (iii) a 'stubbing' regime, with shortening of the struts by local fattening at the front face. The presence of strain hardening reduces the regime of dominance of the stubbing mode. The influence of material strain rate sensitivity is evaluated by introducing strain rate dependent material properties representative of type 304 stainless steel. For this choice of material, strain rate sensitivity has a more minor influence than strain hardening, and consequently the dynamic collapse strength of a corrugated core is almost independent of structural dimension. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
