We prove a characterization of the support of the law of the solution for a stochastic wave equation with two-dimensional space variable, driven by a noise white in time and correlated in space. The result is a consequence of an approximation theorem, in the convergence of probability, for equations obtained by smoothing the random noise. For some particular classes of coefficients, approximation in the Lp-norm for p¿1 is also proved.

New and alternative scientific publishing business models is a reality driven mostly by the information and communication technologies, by the movements towards the recovery of control of the scientific communication activities by the academic community, and by the open access approaches. The hybrid business model, mixing open and toll-access is a reality and they will probably co-exist with respective trade-offs. This essay discusses the changes driven by the epublishing and the impacts on the scholarly communication system stakeholders' interrelationships (publishers-researchers, publishers-libraries and publishers-users interrelationships), and the changes on the scientific publishing business models, followed by a discussion of possible evolving business models. Whatever the model which evolves and dominates, a huge cultural change in authors' and institutions publishing practices will be necessary in order to make the open access happen and to consolidate the right business models for the traditional publishers. External changes such as policies, rewarding systems and institutions mandates should also happen in order to sustain the whole changing scenario.

J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). 2012;14:773-778. ©2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Postmenopausal women are at greater risk for hypertension-related cardiovascular disease. Antihypertensive therapy may help alleviate arterial stiffness that represents a potential modifiable risk factor of hypertension. This randomized controlled study investigated the difference between an angiotensin receptor blocker and a calcium channel blocker in reducing arterial stiffness. Overall, 125 postmenopausal hypertensive women (age, 61.4±6 years; systolic blood pressure/diastolic blood pressure [SBP/DBP], 158±11/92±9 mm Hg) were randomized to valsartan 320 mg±hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) (n=63) or amlodipine 10 mg±HCTZ (n=62). The primary outcome was carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) changes after 38 weeks of treatment. Both treatments lowered peripheral blood pressure (BP) (-22.9/-10.9 mm Hg for valsartan and -25.2/-11.7 mm Hg for amlodipine, P=not significant) and central BP (-15.7/-7.6 mm Hg for valsartan and -19.2/-10.3 mm Hg for amlodipine, P<.05 for central DBP). Both treatments similarly reduced the carotid-femoral PWV (-1.9 vs -1.7 m/s; P=not significant). Amlodipine was associated with a higher incidence of peripheral edema compared with the valsartan group (77% vs 14%, P<.001). BP lowering in postmenopausal women led to a reduction in arterial stiffness as assessed by PWV measurement. Both regimens reduced PWV to a similar degree after 38 weeks of treatment despite differences in central BP lowering, suggesting that the effect of valsartan on PWV is mediated through nonhemodynamic effects.
The relationship between Lamb weather types and long-term changes in flood frequency, River Eden, UK
Resumo:
Research has found that both flood magnitude and frequency in the UK may have increased over the last five decades. However, evaluating whether or not this is a systematic trend is difficult because of the lack of longer records. Here we compile and consider an extreme flood record that extends back to 1770. Since 1770, there have been 137 recorded extreme floods. However, over this period, there is not a unidirectional trend of rising extreme flood risk over time. Instead, there are clear flood-rich and flood-poor periods. Three main flood-rich periods were identified: 18731904, 19231933, and 1994 onwards. To provide a first analysis of what is driving these periods, and given the paucity of more sophisticated datasets that extend back to the 18th century, objective Lamb weather types were used. Of the 27 objective Lamb weather types, only 11 could be associated with the extreme floods during the gauged period, and only 5 of these accounted for > 80% of recorded extreme floods The importance of these five weather types over a longer timescale for flood risk in Carlisle was assessed, through calculating the proportion of each hydrological year classified as being associated with these flood-generating weather types. Two periods clearly had more than the average proportions of the year classified as one of the flood causing weather types; 19001940 and 19832007; and these two periods both contained flood-rich hydrological records. Thus, the analysis suggests that systematic organisation of the North Atlantic climate system may be manifest as periods of elevated and reduced flood risk, an observation that has major implications for analyses that assume that climatic drivers of flood risk can be either statistically stationary or are following a simple trend. PURPOSE: To study the influence of retinal structural changes on oxygen saturation in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients. METHODS: Oximetry measurements were performed on 21 eyes of 11 RP patients and compared to 24 eyes of 12 controls. Retinal oxygen saturation was measured in all major retinal arterioles (A-SO₂) and venules (V-SO₂) with an oximetry unit of the retinal vessel analyser (IMEDOS Systems UG, Jena, Germany). Oximetry data were compared with morphological changes measured by Cirrus optical coherence tomography (OCT) (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA, macular thickness protocol). RESULTS: In RP patients, the retinal A-SO₂ and V-SO₂ levels were higher at 99.3% (p = 0.001, anova based on mixed-effects model) and 66.8% (p < 0.001), respectively, and the difference between the two (A-V SO₂) was lower at 32.5% (p < 0.001), when compared to the control group (92.4%; 54.0%; 38.4%, respectively). With the RP group, the A-V SO₂ correlated positively, not only with central macular thickness, but also with retinal thickness, in zones 2 and 3 (p = 0.006, p = 0.007, p = 0.014). CONCLUSION: These data indicate that oxygen metabolism was altered in RP patients. Based on our preliminary results, retinal vessel saturation correlated with structural alterations in RP. This method could be valuable in monitoring disease progression and evaluating a potential therapeutic response.

The benefit of induced hyperventilation for intracranial pressure (ICP) control after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is controversial. In this study, we investigated the impact of early and sustained hyperventilation on compliances of the cerebral arteries and of the cerebrospinal (CSF) compartment during mild hyperventilation in severe TBI patients. We included 27 severe TBI patients (mean 39.5 ± 3.4 years, 6 women) in whom an increase in ventilation (20% increase in respiratory minute volume) was performed during 50 min as part of a standard clinical CO(2) reactivity test. Using a new mathematical model, cerebral arterial compliance (Ca) and CSF compartment compliance (Ci) were calculated based on the analysis of ICP, arterial blood pressure, and cerebral blood flow velocity waveforms. Hyperventilation initially induced a reduction in ICP (17.5 ± 6.6 vs. 13.9 ± 6.2 mmHg; p < 0.001), which correlated with an increase in Ci (r(2) = 0.213; p = 0.015). Concomitantly, the reduction in cerebral blood flow velocities (CBFV, 74.6 ± 27.0 vs. 62.9 ± 22.9 cm/sec; p < 0.001) marginally correlated with the reduction in Ca (r(2) = 0.209; p = 0.017). During sustained hyperventilation, ICP increased (13.9 ± 6.2 vs. 15.3 ± 6.4 mmHg; p < 0.001), which correlated with a reduction in Ci (r(2) = 0.297; p = 0.003), but no significant changes in Ca were found during that period. The early reduction in Ca persisted irrespective of the duration of hyperventilation, which may contribute to the lack of clinical benefit of hyperventilation after TBI. Further studies are needed to determine whether monitoring of arterial and CSF compartment compliances may detect and prevent an adverse ischemic event during hyperventilation.

Background: Knowledge on the temporal dynamics of host/vector/parasite interactions is a pre-requisite to further address relevant questions in the fields of epidemiology and evolutionary ecology of infectious diseases. In studies of avian malaria, the natural history of Plasmodium parasites with their natural mosquito vectors, however, is mostly unknown. Methods: Using artificial water containers placed in the field, we monitored the relative abundance of parous females of Culex pipiens mosquitoes during two years (2010-2011), in a population in western Switzerland. Additionally, we used molecular tools to examine changes in avian malaria prevalence and Plasmodium lineage composition in female C. pipiens caught throughout one field season (April-August) in 2011. Results: C. pipiens relative abundance varied both between years and months, and was associated with temperature fluctuations. Total Plasmodium prevalence was high and increased from spring to summer months (13.1-20.3%). The Plasmodium community was composed of seven different lineages including P. relictum (SGS1, GRW11 and PADOM02 lineages), P. vaughani (lineage SYAT05) and other Plasmodium spp. (AFTRU5, PADOM1, COLL1). The most prevalent lineages, P. vaughani (lineage SYAT05) and P. relictum (lineage SGS1), were consistently found between years, although they had antagonistic dominance patterns during the season survey. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the time window of analysis is critical in evaluating changes in the community of avian malaria lineages infecting mosquitoes. The potential determinants of the observed changes as well as their implications for future prospects on avian malaria are discussed.

Background: b-value is the parameter characterizing the intensity of the diffusion weighting during image acquisition. Data acquisition is usually performed with low b value (b~1000 s/mm2). Evidence shows that high b-values (b>2000 s/mm2) are more sensitive to the slow diffusion compartment (SDC) and maybe more sensitive in detecting white matter (WM) anomalies in schizophrenia. Methods: 12 male patients with schizophrenia (mean age 35 +/-3 years) and 16 healthy male controls matched for age were scanned with a low b-value (1000 s/mm2) and a high b-value (4000 s/mm2) protocol. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is a measure of the average diffusion distance of water molecules per time unit (mm2/s). ADC maps were generated for all individuals. 8 region of interests (frontal and parietal region bilaterally, centrum semi-ovale bilaterally and anterior and posterior corpus callosum) were manually traced blind to diagnosis. Results: ADC measures acquired with high b-value imaging were more sensitive in detecting differences between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls than low b-value imaging with a gain in significance by a factor of 20- 100 times despite the lower image Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Increased ADC was identified in patient's WM (p=0.00015) with major contributions from left and right centrum semi-ovale and to a lesser extent right parietal region. Conclusions: Our results may be related to the sensitivity of high b-value imaging to the SDC believed to reflect mainly the intra-axonal and myelin bound water pool. High b-value imaging might be more sensitive and specific to WM anomalies in schizophrenia than low b-value imaging

* Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are plant symbionts that improve floristic diversity and ecosystem productivity. Many AMF species are generalists with wide host ranges. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi individuals are heterokaryotic, and AMF populations are genetically diverse. Populations of AMF harbor two levels of genetic diversity on which selection can act, namely among individuals and within individuals. Whether environmental factors alter genetic diversity within populations is still unknown. * Here, we measured genetic changes and changes in fitness-related traits of genetically distinct AMF individuals from one field, grown with different concentrations of available phosphate or different host species. * We found significant genotype-by-environment interactions for AMF fitness traits in response to these treatments. Host identity had a strong effect on the fitness of different AMF, unearthing a specificity of response within Glomus intraradices. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi individuals grown in novel environments consistently showed a reduced presence of polymorphic genetic markers, providing some evidence for host or phosphate-induced genetic change in AMF. * Given that AMF individuals can form extensive hyphal networks colonizing different hosts simultaneously, contrasting habitats or soil properties may lead to evolution in the population. Local selection may alter the structure of AMF populations and maintain genetic diversity, potentially even within the hyphal network of one fungus.

The objective of this work was to determine the early physiological changes throughout shelf life of fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) cv. Piracicaba Precoce at 25ºC and relative humidity of 96% in the dark until complete senescence. Head inflorescences showed lack of turgidity and commercial value when weight loss reached up to 5%, coinciding with 48 hour after harvest. Chlorophyll content was stable until 24 hours after harvesting; afterwards, an intense degradation phase took place. At 72 hours, total head yellowing was observed when chlorophyll content dropped to 30% of its initial content. Peroxidase activity increased by 1.4 fold during the first six hours, dropping to its lowest level approximately 24 hours after harvesting. However, from this time on, an increment of activity was observed until 72 hours. At 24 hours after harvesting, respiration was reduced by 50%. At later stages of senescence, respiration of florets was stable, but in a lower level than that determined at harvest. Sharp reduction of starch and reducing sugars was observed within 24 hours after harvesting, followed by continuous period of decline in starch and non-reducing sugars.
