Precipitation involving mixing of two sets of reverse micellar solutions-containing a reactant and precipitant respectively-has been analyzed. Particle formation in such systems has been simulated by a Monte Carlo (MC) scheme (Li, Y.; Park, C. W. Langmuir 1999, 15, 952), which however is very restrictive in its approach. We have simulated particle formation by developing a general Monte Carlo scheme, using the interval of quiescence technique (IQ). It uses Poisson distribution with realistic, low micellar occupancies of reactants, Brownian collision of micelles with coalescence efficiency, fission of dimers with binomial redispersion of solutes, finite nucleation rate of particles with critical number of molecules, and instantaneous particle growth. With the incorporation of these features, the previous work becomes a special case of our simulation. The present scheme was then used to predict experimental data on two systems. The first is the experimental results of Lianos and Thomas (Chem. Phys. Lett. 1986, 125, 299, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 1987, 117, 505) on formation of CdS nanoparticles. They reported the number of molecules in a particle as a function of micellar size and reactant concentrations, which have been predicted very well. The second is on the formation of Fe(OH)(3) nanoparticles, reported by Li and Park. Our simulation in this case provides a better prediction of the experimental particle size range than the prediction of the authors. The present simulation scheme is general and can be applied to explain nanoparticle formation in other systems.

In this letter we characterize strain in Si1-xGex based heterojunction bipolar transistors and modulation doped field effect transistors grown by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition exploiting the phenomenon of strain-induced birefringence. The technique used is multiple angle of incidence ellipsometry at a wavelength of 670 nm to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the Si1-xGex films. We report measurements on thin fully strained films (with thicknesses less than the critical thickness) with Ge concentration varying from 9% to 40% with an accuracy of the order of 1 part in 10(4) and propose an empirical relation between the difference in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices (deltan) and the Ge concentration (x) given by deltan(x)=0.18x-0.12x(2). We present a generalized adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) scheme, called the double time window targeting (DTWT) technique, which gives accurate results with nominal computational resources, within reasonable computational time. This procedure originates from the amalgamation of the features of pace keeping DMRG algorithm, first proposed by Luo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 049701 (2003)] and the time-step targeting algorithm by Feiguin and White [Phys. Rev. B 72, 020404 (2005)]. Using the DTWT technique, we study the phenomena of spin-charge separation in conjugated polymers (materials for molecular electronics an spintronics), which have long-range electron-electron interactions and belong to the class of strongly correlated low-dimensional many-body systems. The issue of real-time dynamics within the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model which includes long-range electron correlations has not been addressed in the literature so far. The present study on PPP chains has revealed that, (i) long-range electron correlations enable both the charge and spin degree of freedom of the electron, to propagate faster in the PPP model compared to Hubbard model, (ii) for standard parameters of the PPP model as applied to conjugated polymers, the charge velocity is almost twice that of the spin velocity, and (iii) the simplistic interpretation of long-range correlations by merely renormalizing the U value of the Hubbard model fails to explain the dynamics of doped holes/electrons in the PPP model.
Acoustic emission technique for leak detection in an end shield of a pressurised heavy water reactor
Resumo:
This paper discusses a successful application of the Acoustic Emission Technique (AET) for the detection and location of leak paths present on an inaccessible side of an end shield of a Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). The methodology was based on the fact that air- and water-leak AE signals have different characteristic features. Baseline data was generated from a sound end shield of a PHWR for characterising the background noise. A mock-up end shield system with saw-cut leak paths was used to verify the validity of the methodology. It was found that air-leak signals under pressurisation (as low as 3 psi) could be detected by frequency domain analysis. Signals due to air leaks from various locations of defective end shield were acquired and analysed. It was possible to detect and locate leak paths. The presence of detected leak paths was further confirmed by an alternative test.

Formylation of the initiator tRNA is essential for normal growth of Escherichia coil, The initiator tRNA containing the U35A36 mutation (CUA anticodon) initiates from UAG codon, However, an additional mutation at position 72 (72A --> G) renders the tRNA (G72/U35A36) inactive in initiation because it is defective in formylation, In this study, we isolated U1G72/U35A36 tRNA containing a wobble base pair at 1-72 positions as an intragenic suppressor of the G72 mutation. The U1G72/U35A36 tRNA is formylated and participates in initiation. More importantly, we show that the mismatch at 1-72 positions of the initiator tRNA, which was thus far thought to be the hallmark of the resistance of this tRNA against peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (PTH), is not sufficient, The amino acid attached to the initiator tRNA is also important in conferring protection against PTH. Further, we show that the relative levels of PTH and IF2 influence the path adopted by the initiator tRNAs in protein synthesis. These findings provide an important clue to understand the dual function of the single tRNA(Met) in initiation and elongation, in the mitochondria of various organisms.

The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and a closed-loop coexistence curve are obtained, via Monte Carlo simulations, in the water surfactant limit of a two-dimensional version of a statistical mechanical model for micro-emulsions, The CMC and the coexistence curve reproduce various experimental trends as functions of the couplings. In the oil-surfactant limit, there is a conventional coexistence cure with an upper consolute point that allows for a region of three-phase coexistence between oil-rich, water-rich and microemulsion phases.

As-deposited high Tc superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x films with zero resistance temperatures of similar, equals89 K and critical current densities about 0.7×106 A/cm2 at 77 K have been reproducibly fabricated at a substrate holder temperature at 650°C, using pulsed laser deposition, without post-annealing. One key to these results is the injection of gaseous oxygen into laser produced plume just in front of the target. In this way, the correct amount of oxygen is incorporated into the as-grown film so that post-deposition treatment becomes unnecessary. Axial ion channeling in these as-deposit high Tc superconducting films on (100) SrTiO3 and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on the film surfaces were performed. Angular yield profile near the film surface for Ba, and the surface peak intensity were measured using 3 MeV He ions. For channeling normal to the substrate a minimum yield of 7%, compared to similar, equals3% for single crystals, was obtained. The results of ion channeling and XPS studies indicate that the as-deposited films have good crystallinity as well as toichiometry to within similar, equals1 nm of the film surface. The in-situ growth of such high Tc and Jc films is an important step in the use of the laser deposition technique to fabricate multilayer structures and the surface perfection is of importance in tunneling devices such as Josephson junctions.

The electrical capacitance and resistance of the binary liquid mixture cyclohexane + acetonitrile are measured in the one phase and two phase regions at spot frequencies between 5 kHz and 100 kHz. This sample has a very low gravity affected (∼0.6 mK) region. In one phase region the capacitance data show a sharp, ∼0.7% increase above background within 0.5 degrees of Tc whereas the resistance has a smooth increase of ∼1.5% above background in a (T−Tc) range of 4 degrees. Two phase values of capacitance and resistance from the coexisting phases are used to determine the critical parameters Tc (critical temperature), Rc (resistance at Tc) and Cc (capacitance at Tc). A precise knowledge of these parameters reduces the uncertainty on the critical exponent 0 for C and R. The one phase capacitance data fit to an (1 - α) exponent in a limited temperature range of 0.2 degrees. Resistance data strongly support an (1 - α) exponent over the entire 5 degree range.

High-precision measurement of the electrical resistance of nickel along its critical line, a first attempt of this kind, as a function of pressure to 47.5 kbar is reported. Our analysis yields the values of the critical exponents α=α’=-0.115±0.005 and the amplitude ratios ‖A/A’‖=1.17±0.07 and ‖D/D’‖=1.2±0.1. These values are in close agreement with those predicted by renormalization-group (RG) theory. Moreover, this investigation provides an unambiguous experimental verification to one of the key consequences of RG theory that the critical exponents and amplitudes ratios are insensitive to pressure variation in nickel, a Heisenberg ferromagnet.

A parametric study was carried out to determine the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) in a cracked circular ring by using the photoelastic technique. The stress intensity factors for mode I deformation were determined by subjecting the specimens to the tensile loading from inner boundary and through the holes. The results of Non-Dimensional Stress Intensity Factor (NDSIF) variation with non-dimensional crack length for both methods of loading are compared with each other and with published results.

We report preliminary experiments on the ternary-liquid mixture, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)+water (W)+secondary butyl alcohol (sBA)-a promising system for the realization of the quadruple critical point (QCP). The unusual tunnel-shaped phase diagram shown by this system is characterized and visualized by us in the form of a prismatic phase diagram. Light-scattering experiments reveal that (MEK+W+sBA) shows near three-dimensional-Ising type of critical behavior near the lower critical solution temperatures, with the susceptibility exponent (gamma) in the range of 1.217 <=gamma <= 1.246. The correlation length amplitudes (xi(o)) and the critical exponent (nu) of the correlation length (xi) are in the ranges of 3.536 <=xi(o)<= 4.611 A and 0.619 <=nu <= 0.633, respectively. An analysis in terms of the effective susceptibility exponent (gamma(eff)) shows that the critical behavior is of the Ising type for MEK concentrations in the ranges of 0.1000 <= X <= 0.1250 and X >= 0.3000. But, for the intermediate range of 0.1750 <= X < 0.3000, the system shows a tendency towards mean-field type of critical behavior. The advantages of the system (MEK+W+sBA) over the system (3-methylpyridine+water+heavy water+potassium Iodide) for the realization of a QCP are outlined.
