A biophysical model of atrial fibrillation ablation: what can a surgeon learn from a computer model?

AIMS: Surgical ablation procedures for treating atrial fibrillation have been shown to be highly successful. However, the ideal ablation pattern still remains to be determined. This article reports on a systematic study of the effectiveness of the performance of different ablation line patterns. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study of ablation line patterns was performed in a biophysical model of human atria by combining basic lines: (i) in the right atrium: isthmus line, line between vena cavae and appendage line and (ii) in the left atrium: several versions of pulmonary vein isolation, connection of pulmonary veins, isthmus line, and appendage line. Success rates and the presence of residual atrial flutter were documented. Basic patterns yielded conversion rates of only 10-25 and 10-55% in the right and the left atria, respectively. The best result for pulmonary vein isolation was obtained when a single closed line encompassed all veins (55%). Combination of lines in the right/left atrium only led to a success rate of 65/80%. Higher rates, up to 90-100%, could be obtained if right and left lines were combined. The inclusion of a left isthmus line was found to be essential for avoiding uncommon left atrial flutter. CONCLUSION: Some patterns studied achieved a high conversion rate, although using a smaller number of lines than those of the Maze III procedure. The biophysical atrial model is shown to be effective in the search for promising alternative ablation strategies.

Aquest projecte consisteix en la realització d'un framework de persistència per realitzar l'enllaç entre el model de dades relacional i el model de dades orientat a objectes. L'aplicació que implementarem per tal de provar el nostre framework consisteix en l'adaptació web d'un software financer que serveix per tenir un control de la tresoreria.

En aquest PFC s'analitzaran els diversos frameworks de persistència que actualment existeixen i es facilitarà el desenvolupament d'un conjunt de components que permetran simplificar la capa de persistència en aplicacions multicapa desenvolupades amb JEE.

The geometric structure of the brain fiber pathways.

The structure of the brain as a product of morphogenesis is difficult to reconcile with the observed complexity of cerebral connectivity. We therefore analyzed relationships of adjacency and crossing between cerebral fiber pathways in four nonhuman primate species and in humans by using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. The cerebral fiber pathways formed a rectilinear three-dimensional grid continuous with the three principal axes of development. Cortico-cortical pathways formed parallel sheets of interwoven paths in the longitudinal and medio-lateral axes, in which major pathways were local condensations. Cross-species homology was strong and showed emergence of complex gyral connectivity by continuous elaboration of this grid structure. This architecture naturally supports functional spatio-temporal coherence, developmental path-finding, and incremental rewiring with correlated adaptation of structure and function in cerebral plasticity and evolution.

Computer Analysis of Twin Box Culverts, 1959

The paper presents a method of analyzing Rigid Frames by use of the Conjugate Beam Theory. The development of the method along with an example is given. This method has been used to write a computer program for the analysis of twin box culverts. The culverts may be analyzed under any fill height and any of the standard truck loadings. The wall and slab thickness are increased by the computer program as necessary. The final result is steel requirements both for moment and shear, and the slab and wall thickness.

L'abast d'aquest projecte es centrarà en el disseny d'una eina de gestió d'un planificador d'execucions batch, que intentarà donar una solució independent de l'entorn on s'executen aquests processos i que servirà com a eina de suport a un equip d'analistes i dissenyadors que creïn o mantinguin aquests processos.

Construcción y explotación de un almacén de datos para el análisis de información sobre el tránsito rodado de vehículos

El objetivo principal del TFC es la construcción y explotación de un almacén de datos. El proceso de trabajo se basa en la ejecución de un caso práctico, en el cual se presenta un escenario en el que se necesita desarrollar un almacén de datos para la Fundació d'Estudis per a la Conducció Responsable, la cual desea estudiar la evolución del número de desplazamientos en vehículo de motor en Cataluña así como analizar las posibles correlaciones entre medios de locomoción, perfiles de conductores y algunas variables de seguridad vial.
