Comparing Psychological Type and Explanatory Between Nursing Students and Clinical Faculty: A Pilot Study

Negotiation of complex collaboration and effective teamwork among health care providers is essential to patient safety and to quality of care. This study examined characteristics of nursing students and faculty influencing communication between them. Psychological type (Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) (Myers, McCaulley, Quenk, & Hammer, 1998) and explanatory style (Attributional Style Questionnaire) (ASQ) (Peterson et al., 1982) were compared for participating first year baccalaureate nursing students (N=286), and clinical nursing faculty (N=59) from both two- and four-year nursing programs. Modal student psychological type was ESFJ; modal faculty psychological type was ISTJ. The two groups demonstrated significant differences in processing information, and making decisions and judgments. Students were slightly more optimistic than faculty. Psychological type and level of optimism did not appear to correlate. Data from this pilot study provide an initial framework on which to base further research that could enhance the quality of teamwork among healthcare providers.

Teacher support and encouragement in the classroom and its impact on childhood obesity

Objectives. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States among children. Great efforts are being made to target this problem, both at home and at school. While parents and peers have proven an effective means of distributing information, the well of the influence of teacher encouragement of health behaviors remains untapped. The purpose of this study is to assess the association of teacher encouragement with diet and physical activity behaviors and obesity in a sample of eighth grade students in central Texas. ^ Methods. In the spring of 2011, the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) study distributed teacher surveys to each of the teachers in the schools on the grant. In addition to questions concerning the implementation of CATCH, this survey employed social support questions to gauge the prevalence of teacher encouragement of health behaviors in the classroom. During the same time frame, eighth graders in these same schools completed student surveys which assessed dietary and physical activity knowledge and behaviors and demographics and participated in objective measures of student height and weight. A cross-sectional secondary data analysis was conducted in order to compare self-reported teacher encouragement to student behaviors and several student obesity measures on a by school basis. ^ Results. 1150 teachers and 2582 students from 29 of the 30 measurement schools returned completed surveys. No statistically significant relationship was found between the six teacher encouragement measures and their corresponding student reported health behaviors, nor was one found the mean support per school and child percent overweight. A menial positive relationship was found between the mean support per school and child BMI z-scores, BMI, and percent obese (p = 0.035, 0.003 and 0.003, respectively); however, these relationships were not in the predicted direction. ^ Conclusion. While the findings of this investigation show primarily null results, motivating questions as to the impact to teacher encouragement on middle school student's health remain. It is possible that in order to draw more effective conclusions, more comprehensive studies are warranted which specifically target these relationships.^

DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL METHODS TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT OF SEQUENCING ERRORS IN THE NEXT-GENERATION SEQUENCING DATA ANALYSIS

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has become a prominent tool in biological and biomedical research. However, NGS data analysis, such as de novo assembly, mapping and variants detection is far from maturity, and the high sequencing error-rate is one of the major problems. . To minimize the impact of sequencing errors, we developed a highly robust and efficient method, MTM, to correct the errors in NGS reads. We demonstrated the effectiveness of MTM on both single-cell data with highly non-uniform coverage and normal data with uniformly high coverage, reflecting that MTM’s performance does not rely on the coverage of the sequencing reads. MTM was also compared with Hammer and Quake, the best methods for correcting non-uniform and uniform data respectively. For non-uniform data, MTM outperformed both Hammer and Quake. For uniform data, MTM showed better performance than Quake and comparable results to Hammer. By making better error correction with MTM, the quality of downstream analysis, such as mapping and SNP detection, was improved. SNP calling is a major application of NGS technologies. Specific conductivity and hydrogen ions measured on two ice core (NEEM and NGRIP)

A stratigraphy-based chronology for the North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling (NEEM) ice core has been derived by transferring the annual layer counted Greenland Ice Core Chronology 2005 (GICC05) and its model extension (GICC05modelext) from the NGRIP core to the NEEM core using 787 match points of mainly volcanic origin identified in the electrical conductivity measurement (ECM) and dielectrical profiling (DEP) records. Tephra horizons found in both the NEEM and NGRIP ice cores are used to test the matching based on ECM and DEP and provide five additional horizons used for the timescale transfer. A thinning function reflecting the accumulated strain along the core has been determined using a Dansgaard-Johnsen flow model and an isotope-dependent accumulation rate parameterization. Flow parameters are determined from Monte Carlo analysis constrained by the observed depth-age horizons. In order to construct a chronology for the gas phase, the ice age-gas age difference (Delta age) has been reconstructed using a coupled firn densification-heat diffusion model. Temperature and accumulation inputs to the Delta age model, initially derived from the water isotope proxies, have been adjusted to optimize the fit to timing constraints from d15N of nitrogen and high-resolution methane data during the abrupt onset of Greenland interstadials. The ice and gas chronologies and the corresponding thinning function represent the first chronology for the NEEM core, named GICC05modelext-NEEM-1. Based on both the flow and firn modelling results, the accumulation history for the NEEM site has been reconstructed. Together, the timescale and accumulation reconstruction provide the necessary basis for further analysis of the records from NEEM.

Dome C age scale EDC1 for ice core EDC99

A tentative age scale (EDC1) for the last 45 kyr is established for the new 788 m EPICA Dome C ice core using a simple ice flow model. The age of volcanic eruptions, the end of the Younger Dryas event, and the estimated depth and age of elevated 10Be, about 41 kyr ago were used to calibrate the model parameters. The uncertainty of EDC1 is estimated to ±10 yr for 0 to 700 yr BP, up to ±200 yr back to 10 kyr BP, and up to ±2 kyr back to 41 kyr BP. The age of the air in the bubbles is calculated with a firn densification model. In the Holocene the air is about 2000 yr younger than the ice and about 5500 yr during the last glacial maximum.
