We explore a pseudodynamic form of the quadratic parameter update equation for diffuse optical tomographic reconstruction from noisy data. A few explicit and implicit strategies for obtaining the parameter updates via a semianalytical integration of the pseudodynamic equations are proposed. Despite the ill-posedness of the inverse problem associated with diffuse optical tomography, adoption of the quadratic update scheme combined with the pseudotime integration appears not only to yield higher convergence, but also a muted sensitivity to the regularization parameters, which include the pseudotime step size for integration. These observations are validated through reconstructions with both numerically generated and experimentally acquired data. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

In this paper, we compare the electronic structure of the hafnacycloallene complex Cp(2)HfC(4)Rr'(2)R `' (5Hf), which was previously described by Erker et al., with those of the titanium, zirconium, and hafnium complexes Cp(2)M(eta(4)-RHC(4)HR) (3M; i.e. metallacyclopent-2,3,4-trienes, metallacyclocumulenes) and Cp(2)M(eta(2)-R(2)C(4)R(2)) (4M; i.e. 1-metallacyclopent-3-ynes) using density functional theory (BP86/LANL2DZ) calculations. Moreover, the eta(3)-phenylallenyl zirconocene complex 7Zr, which was synthesized by Wojcicki et al., is included for the comparison. These calculations and extended Huckel calculations show that the bonding in complex 5Hf is remarkably similar to that of complexes 4M and 7Zr. An analysis of the structural parameters and bonding reveals that the unique interaction of the internal carbon atoms along with the terminal carbon atoms with the bent-metallocene moiety is the reason for the unusual stability of these metallacycles. The molecular orbital analysis further suggests that complex 5Hf can react with another metal fragment to give the bimetallic complexes 9 and 10. The electronic structures of complexes 3M, 4M, 5Hf, and 7Zr have been comparatively studied to get a general understanding of the bonding in these metallacycles.

In the present study, solidification microstructure and texture evolution in grain-refined Ti-6Al-4V and γ-TiAl alloys via trace boron addition are compared with their baseline counterparts. Boron addition resulted in dramatic grain refinement by almost an order of magnitude. The texture developed in these alloys is also markedly different from the baseline alloys.

A set of finite elements (FEs) is formulated to analyze wave propagation through inhomogeneous material when subjected to mechanical, thermal loading or piezo-electric actuation. Elastic, thermal and electrical properties of the materials axe allowed to vary in length and thickness direction. The elements can act both as sensors and actuators. These elements are used to model wave propagation in functionally graded materials (FGM) and the effect of inhomogeneity in the wave is demonstrated. Further, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is modeled and wave propagation due to piezo-electric actuation from interdigital transducers (IDTs) is studied.

Part classification and coding is still considered as laborious and time-consuming exercise. Keeping in view, the crucial role, which it plays, in developing automated CAPP systems, the attempts have been made in this article to automate a few elements of this exercise using a shape analysis model. In this study, a 24-vector directional template is contemplated to represent the feature elements of the parts (candidate and prototype). Various transformation processes such as deformation, straightening, bypassing, insertion and deletion are embedded in the proposed simulated annealing (SA)-like hybrid algorithm to match the candidate part with their prototype. For a candidate part, searching its matching prototype from the information data is computationally expensive and requires large search space. However, the proposed SA-like hybrid algorithm for solving the part classification problem considerably minimizes the search space and ensures early convergence of the solution. The application of the proposed approach is illustrated by an example part. The proposed approach is applied for the classification of 100 candidate parts and their prototypes to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. The unsteady free convection flow over an infinite vertical porous plate, which moves with time-dependent velocity in an ambient fluid, has been studied. The effects of the magnetic field and Hall current are included in the analysis. The buoyancy forces arise due to both the thermal and mass diffusion. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using both the implicit finite difference scheme and the difference-differential method. For the steady case, analytical solutions have also been obtained. The effect of time variation on the skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer is very significant. Suction increases the skin friction coefficient in the primary flow, and also the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, but the skin friction coefficient in the secondary flow is reduced. The effect of injection is opposite to that of suction. The buoyancy force, injection and the Hall parameter induce an overshoot in the velocity profiles in the primary flow which changes the velocity gradient from a negative to a positive value, but the magnetic field and suction reduce this velocity overshoot.

This paper proposes a derivative-free two-stage extended Kalman filter (2-EKF) especially suited for state and parameter identification of mechanical oscillators under Gaussian white noise. Two sources of modeling uncertainties are considered: (1) errors in linearization, and (2) an inadequate system model. The state vector is presently composed of the original dynamical/parameter states plus the so-called bias states accounting for the unmodeled dynamics. An extended Kalman estimation concept is applied within a framework predicated on explicit and derivative-free local linearizations (DLL) of nonlinear drift terms in the governing stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The original and bias states are estimated by two separate filters; the bias filter improves the estimates of the original states. Measurements are artificially generated by corrupting the numerical solutions of the SDEs with noise through an implicit form of a higher-order linearization. Numerical illustrations are provided for a few single- and multidegree-of-freedom nonlinear oscillators, demonstrating the remarkable promise that 2-EKF holds over its more conventional EKF-based counterparts. Ferromagnetic dicopper(II) complexes [Cu(2)(mu-O(2)CCH(3))(mu-OH)(L)(2)(mu-L(1))](PF(6))(2), where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), L(1) = H(2)O in 1 and L = dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq), L(1) = CH(3)CN in 2, are prepared and structurally characterized. Crystals of 1 and 2 belong to the monoclinic space group of P2(1)/n and P2(1)/m, respectively. The copper(II) centers display distorted square-pyramidal geometry having a phenanthroline base and two oxygen atoms of the bridging hydroxo and acetate group in the basal plane. The fifth coordination site has weak axially bound bridging solvent molecule H(2)O in 1 and CH(3)CN in 2. The Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distances are 3.034 and 3.046 angstrom in 1 and 2, respectively. The complexes show efficient hydrolytic cleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA as evidenced from the mechanistic studies that include T4 DNA ligase experiments. The binuclear complexes form monomeric copper(II) adducts [Cu(L)(2)(BNPP)](PF(6)) (L = phen, 3; dpq, 4) with bis(4-nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) as a model phosphodiester. The crystal structures of 3 and 4 reveal distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry in which BNPP binds through the oxygen atom of the phosphate. The kinetic data of the DNA cleavage reactions of the binuclear complexes under pseudo- and true-Michaelis-Menten conditions indicate remarkable enhancement in the DNA hydrolysis rate in comparison to the control data. Hypoeutectic boron addition (0.1 wt.%) to Ti-6Al-4V is known to cause significant refinement of the cast microstructure. In the present investigation, it has been observed that trace boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy also ensures excellent microstructural homogeneity throughout the ingot. A subdued thermal gradient, related to the basic grain refinement mechanism by constitutional undercooling, persists during solidification for the boron-containing alloy and maintains equivalent beta grain growth kinetics at different locations in the ingot. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows relatively strong texture with preferred components (e.g. ingot axis parallel to[0 0 0 1] or [1 0 (1) over bar 0]) over the entire ingot and gradual transition of texture components along the radius. For Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy, significant weakening characterizes both the high-temperature beta and room-temperature a texture. In addition to solidification factors that are responsible for weak beta texture development, microstructural differences due to boron addition, e.g. the absence of grain boundary alpha phase and presence of TiB particles, strongly affects the mechanism of beta -> alpha phase transformation and consequently weakens the alpha phase texture. Based on the understanding developed for the boron-modified alloy, a novel mechanism has been proposed for the microstructure and texture formation during solidification and phase transformation. Size and strain rate effects are among several factors which play an important role in determining the response of nanostructures, such as their deformations, to the mechanical loadings. The mechanical deformations in nanostructure systems at finite temperatures are intrinsically dynamic processes. Most of the recent works in this context have been focused on nanowires [1, 2], but very little attention has been paid to such low dimensional nanostructures as quantum dots (QDs). In this contribution, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with an embedded atom potential method(EAM) are carried out to analyse the size and strain rate effects in the silicon (Si) QDs, as an example. We consider various geometries of QDs such as spherical, cylindrical and cubic. We choose Si QDs as an example due to their major applications in solar cells and biosensing. The analysis has also been focused on the variation in the deformation mechanisms with the size and strain rate for Si QD embedded in a matrix of SiO2 [3] (other cases include SiN and SiC matrices). It is observed that the mechanical properties are the functions of the QD size, shape and strain rate as it is in the case for nanowires [2]. We also present the comparative study resulted from the application of different EAM potentials in particular, the Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential, the Tersoff potentials and the environment-dependent interatomic potential (EDIP) [1]. Finally, based on the stabilized structural properties we compute electronic bandstructures of our nanostructures using an envelope function approach and its finite element implementation.

In this paper, we propose a new design configuration for a carbon nanotube (CNT) array based pulsed field emission device to stabilize the field emission current. In the new design, we consider a pointed height distribution of the carbon nanotube array under a diode configuration with two side gates maintained at a negative potential to obtain a highly intense beam of electrons localized at the center of the array. The randomly oriented CNTs are assumed to be grown on a metallic substrate in the form of a thin film. A model of field emission from an array of CNTs under diode configuration was proposed and validated by experiments. Despite high output, the current in such a thin film device often decays drastically. The present paper is focused on understanding this problem. The random orientation of the CNTs and the electromechanical interaction are modeled to explain the self-assembly. The degraded state of the CNTs and the electromechanical force are employed to update the orientation of the CNTs. Pulsed field emission current at the device scale is finally obtained by using the Fowler-Nordheim equation by considering a dynamic electric field across the cathode and the anode and integration of current densities over the computational cell surfaces on the anode side. Furthermore we compare the subsequent performance of the pointed array with the conventionally used random and uniform arrays and show that the proposed design outperforms the conventional designs by several orders of magnitude. Based on the developed model, numerical simulations aimed at understanding the effects of various geometric parameters and their statistical features on the device current history are reported.
