The aim of this in vitro study was to comparatively evaluate the mesio and distal furcation entrance measurements of first maxillary premolar. The measurements were compared with different curette blades. A caliper was used by an examinator to acquire the measurements of root trunk (TR); 1 mm (D1) and 2 mm (D2) both below the furcation entrance. For this study Gracey, Mini Gracey, Padua Lima (PL) and Goldman Fox 4 curettes (Millenium) were selected. Measurements of DT - total distance of the active blade length, DI - width of the active blade, DM - width of the medium part of the active blade were obtained for the curettes. The measurements were obtained in both the coronary face and in the lateral face. The data TR, D1 and D2 presented normal distribution and were statistically analyzed by paired t-test. Statistically significant differences were found in the mesial root trunk region (TR) of both premolars. The mean of the measurements was greater than the distal. Mean and standard deviation were obtained, and both Gracey and Mini Gracey showed mean measurements compatible with the closer furcation entrance (D1 - 1 mm). Goldman Fox 4 showed adaptation only in the mesial face, and Padua Lima showed no access to any of the faces. Thereby it is concluded that the access of the furcation is narrow (D1). The mesial face of the root trunk (TR) showed mean measurement greater than distal face. Gracey and Mini Gracey curettes demonstrated to be compatible for both faces, mesial and distal of the first maxillary premolars studied.

Purpose: The authors tried to verify the anatomic location of the mandibular foramen and língula in dry jaws regarding the anterior and posterior border of the mandible and the incisure, alveolar border and mandibular base, in order to correlate the data with the sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Methods: There were evaluated 44 mandibles (88 sides) from the Morphology Department of the Araraquara Dental School of the São Paulo University (UNESP). The distances measured were previously deter - mined according to the figures presented in this article and were done by the use of a sliding caliper (Brow & Sharpe Digit-Cal Plus), with the mandibles positioned over a Erickson table, and the distan - ces were always measured in millimeters. Results: The pre-determined points and distances founded were X=17,67; Y=14,35; W=20,96 and Z=21,89 for the mandibular foramen, and the relationship between this anatomical structure and the língula shows that the mandibular foramen is in average 5,82 mm below the língula. Conclusions: The authors conclude that the mandibular foramen is lightly posterior in comparison with the ramus mandibular center and that the língula is a very important anatomic landmark for the ramus surgeries as well the knowledge of the distance between it and the mandibular foramen entrance.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of residues of sodium hypo-chlorite gel, chlorhexidine gel, and EDTA gel on dentina l walls after canal preparat ion throughchemical SEM- elemental chemical microanal ys is (EDS) analysis. Forty-eight single-rootedteeth were selected. They had their crowns sectioned and were instrumented with a reciprocat-ing system. The canals were irrigated with 5 mL of saline solution during root canal preparation. After instrumentation, the root canals were irrigated with 3 mL 17% EDTA followed by 1 min ofultrasonic passive activation (33 20 sec) to remove the smear layer, and then irrigated with3 mL of saline solution. The specimens were randomized into three groups (n 5 12) accord ing tothe chemical substance that filled the root canal for 30 min: GI: 5.5% sodium hypochlorite gel;GII: 2% chlorhexidine gel; GIII: 24% EDTA gel; Negative c ontrol group: no substance was used. Then, the root canals were irrigated with 6 mL of saline solution followed by 1 min of ultrasonicpassive activation (33 20 sec). After ultrasonic activation , the canals were irrigated with 2 mLsaline. The roots were sect ioned, and the perce ntage of each chemical element present in thesamples was analyzed through chemi cal SEM-EDS microanalysis. All expe rimental groupsshowed a significantly higher percentage of chemical elements (Na and/or Cl) than the controlgroup (P < 0.03). This in vitro study has shown that, regardless of chemical solutions used evenafter the final irrigation protocol, chemical residues of d ifferent substances remained attached tothe r oot c anal wa lls. Presented in a rehearsal form, this article aims to bring out a historical discussion about the relationship between art-madness in Brazil. Result of a research that had as object the critical fortune written on the first exhibit of the Museum of Images of the Unconscious, this work aims to connect two little closer fields: art criticism and mental health, especially since Mário Pedrosa’s work. It was possible to ascertain, throughout the investigation, that there was a position taken by art critics at that time (the 1940s), that position is basically divided into two, briefly explored here: those who encouraged the exhibits, and thereby attested the artistic value of the work produced in the studio of Pedro II Psychiatric Center (where it was founded the Museum); and those who decried the artistic character of "unconscious images", as would be known the works that were produced there. Thus, we can say that, indeed, the virgin art – so entitled by Pedrosa – functioned as a kind of sting to the renewal of our health practices, but mainly influenced the completion of a cycle of modernism in our country.

The present study aimed to assess the influence of curing distance on the loss of irradiance and power density of four curing light devices. The behavior in terms of power density of four different dental curing devices was analyzed (Valo, Elipar 2, Radii-Cal, and Optilux-401) using three different distances of photopolymerization (0 mm, 4 mm, and 8 mm). All devices had their power density measured using a MARC simulator. Ten measurements were made per device at each distance. The total amount of energy delivered and the required curing time to achieve 16 J/cm2 of energy was also calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s tests (p < 0.05). The curing distance significantly interfered with the loss of power density for all curing light devices, with the farthest distance generating the lowest power density and consequently the longer time to achieve an energy density of 16 J/cm2 (p < 0.01). Comparison of devices showed that Valo, in extra power mode, showed the best results at all distances, followed by Valo in high power mode, Valo in standard mode, Elipar 2, Radii-Cal, and Optilux-401 halogen lamp (p < 0.01). These findings indicate that all curing lights induced a significant loss of irradiance and total energy when the light was emitted farther from the probe. The Valo device in extra power mode showed the highest power density and the shortest time to achieve an energy density of 16 J/cm2 at all curing distances.

The objective was to evaluate the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of sugarcane hydrolysed with increasing doses of calcium oxide and varying air exposure times. A completely randomised, split plot design was used; the doses were allocated to the plots, and the air exposure times were allocated to the subplots, with four repetitions. The data underwent analysis of variance and were laid out according to the effect of the treatment on the components of polynomial regressions, and evaluated at the 5% probability. The increase in the dosage negatively affected the quantities of neutral-detergent fibre (NDF), acid-detergent fibre (ADF), lignin (LIG), total carbohydrates (TC), cellulose (CEL), crude protein (CP), and ether extract (EE); and positively affected the quantities of non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) and mineral matter (MM). The addition of calcium oxide improved the in vitro digestible dry matter (IVDMD) coefficients and was able to keep up to 72 hours. The in vitro digestibility of the neutral-detergent fibre (IVDNDF) and of the acid-detergent fibre (IVDADF) coefficients decreased when calcium oxide was added. Calcium oxide has the ability to hydrolyse the fibrous fraction and conserve chopped sugarcane. Doses of 0.5 and 1.0% lime exhibited similar results to those achieved at higher doses; therefore, higher doses are not required in the hydrolyses of sugarcane. Over time, the sugarcane deteriorates, but this deterioration is reduced by the addition of calcium oxide.

It is know that endotoxin and various matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the development of periapical lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and correlate the presence of endotoxins and MMP- 3, MMP-8 and MMP-9 in root canals of teeth with necrotic pulp and periapical lesion before, during and after the biomechanical preparation (PBM) using a combination of different irrigations solutions and intracanal dressing. Thirty-three single-root teeth with a diagnosis of pulp necrosis and periapical lesion radiographically visible were selected. Immediately after the coronal opening was collected the first sample from the root canal content. Then, all canals were prepared (cervical and middle thirds) by oscillatory instruments (EndoEze) and irrigated by 2.5% NaOCl. After, a manual preparation was made for the apical third and the teeth were divided into three groups according to the irrigation protocol: G1) 2.5% NaOCl (4 manual files); G2) 2.5% NaOCl (2 manual files) + [Ca (OH)2 0.14%] (2 manual files) and G3) 2.5% NaOCl (2 manual files) + polymyxin B (2 manual files). After the PBM, the second sample was collected; then the third collect was performed after using EDTA final flush. The fourth sample was collected 14 days after placing the dressing [2% chlorhexidine gel + Ca(OH)2]. Quantification of endotoxins was performed by a kinetic chromogenic lysate from amoebocytes of Limulus (LAL) and quantification of MMPs by ELISA assay. The results were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test (5%) and ordinal Spearman correlation. Presence of endotoxin was observed in 100% of cases and G3 showed the greatest reduction of endotoxins from the 1st to the 2nd samples (97%), being statistically similar to G2 (84.2%) and different from G1 (49.4%) (p<0.05). The intracanal dressing promoted a significant reduction of endotoxin, no difference among the groups. For...

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances extraordinarily toxic and persistent in the environment. Due to these properties, POPs are targets of the Stockholm Convention which aims to provide means to eliminate production and use by encouraging the reduction and, where possible, eliminating the release of these contaminants to the environment. One of the articles of this _Convention aims to assess the basal levels of such substances in the environment to monitor both the reduction of release to the environment, and to assess human exposure, using analyzes of milk and air for example. Although efforts to control POPs production and release to the environment have been made, data about their levels in Brazil are still scarce, mainly in the atmosphere or indoor environment. Considering the permanence of people inside its house, this study presents a method for POP extraction from XAD-2 sorbent employed in indoor air sampling, with identification and quantification by GC-ECD. GC-ECD linear range of the studied analytes, congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) (28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180), DDTs and their metabolites (DDDs, DDEs) and endosullan (isomers c - and 13 - and metabolite endosulfan sulfate) ranged between 0.5 and 16.0 ng mL-I with r2 > 0.967. The method developing consist of selecting the extraction solvent system by agitation (90 rpm, 1 hour) with n-hexan,e (2 mL) or n-hexane:acetone (1:1, v/v) (2 mL), concentration the extract with a gentle N2 stream, and evaluation of breakthrough with passage or air through the fortified XAD-2 cartridge before extraction, employing a low volume air suction pump (Pump Model 224 universal-PCXR8; 5-5000 mL min-1, SKC Inc., Eighty Four, PA, USA), Calibrator Dry-Cal DC-Lite (BIOS, Butler, NJ, USA)). Two fortification levels were employed, 15 and 30 ng. After selecting n-hexane as extraction solvent, with accuracy and precision ranging...
