Oxygen uptake and the influence of declining oxygen pressures (Po2's) were examined in a Brazilian spirostreptid millipede, Pseudonannolene tricolor. The data were obtained in a Warburg respirometer at 25-degrees-C from both male and female animals, sexually inactive, in the intermolt stage, and fasting for 24 h. In a sudden exposure to a decreased Po2 the millipedes regulated respiration down to at least 71 mmHg O2. From a Po2 of 35 mmHg O2 downward the animals started to show oxyconformity. When the millipedes were exposed to a stepwise declining Po2 the results indicated only conformation. After exposure to hypoxia, P. tricolor showed a pattern of underrepayment on return to normoxia, but larger millipedes accumulated more O2 debt than smaller ones.

Meioformula was determined in 16 species of the family Cerambycidae, seven of them of the subfamily Cerambycinae, eight of Lamiinae and one of Prioninae. Only two species of Cerambycinae and one of Lamiinae showed the basic Polypliaga karyotype (9 + Xy(p)) and the remaining ones showed occurrence of centric fusions and fissions that have modified the basic karyotypes. These results are in accordance with previous studies on other species of this family.

Five species of titi monkey (Callicebus brunneus, Callicebus caligatus, Callicebus cinerascens, Callicebus donacophilus, and Callicebus moloch) were recorded in surveys of primate populations at 26 sites throughout the Brazilian state of Rondonia. The distribution of the two species, C. cinerascens and C. donacophilus (recorded in the state for the first time), appeared to be related to that of non-forest ecosystems, the former in the cerrado woodlands, and the latter in gallery forests of the Guapore grasslands. The results of the surveys also indicate that C. brunneus has a more restricted distribution in southern Rondonia than was previously thought, whereas C. moloch is more widespread. However, the ecological factors that determine species distribution in the south of the state remain unclear on the basis of the available data. All species were observed in small social groups of no more than five individuals, which are typical of the genus, generally in the middle and lower forest strata.

Aqueous infusions of Brazilian Maytenus leaves are used as beverages, foodstuffs, and phytomedicines. Previously, we isolated two new flavonoid tetrasaccharides from the infusion of Maytenus aquifolium leaves that showed antiulcer activity. In this investigation a new flavonoid tetrasaccharide, kaempferol-3-O-alpha -L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-6)-O-[alpha -L-arabinopyranosyl (1 -->3)-O-alpha -L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-2)]-O-beta -D-galactopyranoside (3), was isolated, together with kaempferol tri- and disaccharides and quercetin trisaccharides from the aqueous infusion of Maytenus ilicifolia leaves. All structures were elucidated by ES-MS and NMR spectroscopic methods. The quantitative analysis of the flavonoid glycosides from Maytenus ilicifolia and M. aquifolium has been performed by HPLC.

The performance of the NORAD models for near Earth satellites (SGP, SGP4, SGP8) using two Brazilian flying satellites, SCD-1 and SCD-2, and the Chinese-Brazilian satellite CBERS-1 is compared. The achievable accuracy of such models is compared against the predicted 2-lines elements set for the satellites. Every week an updated fresh set of 2-lines elements for these satellites is made available through the Internet. About ten years of observations of the SCD-1 satellite are available and therefore solar activity influences on the orbit can be analyzed. Data are selected considering also orbital (for CBERS-1) and attitude (for SCD-2) maneuvers - (C) 2002 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The family Myrtaceae is one of the most important related to fruit species. In Brazil it encloses more than 100 species of native fruit from North to South of the country (Giacometti, 1992; Donadio, 1992; Mattos, 1992). The genus Eugenia, Campomanesia, Psidium and Myrciaria are the most important, grouping most of the species of some importance. The germplasm bank of the Universidade Estadual Paulista includes some of the major species. Some characteristics are typical for most of the Myrtaceae fruit species. The most relevant are the long juvenile period presented by the trees, taking long time to produce, when propagated by seed; the slow growing tree behavior; difficult to propagated by vegetative means; large variability in trees obtained by seed propagation. The cited characteristics are commented for some species as well as the fruit quality, from data obtained in trees at the same ecological conditions. The species evaluated are: 1) Eugenia stipitata Mc Vaugh; 2) Eugenia tomentosa Cambes; 3) Eugenia brasiliensis Lam.; 4) Eugenia uniflora L.; 5) Eugenia luchsnathiana Berg.; 6) Eugenia uvalha Cambess; 7) Camponesia spp; 8) Plinia edulis (Veil. Sobral); 9) Eugenia involucrata D.C.; 10) Psidium acutangulum Mart.; 11) Myrciaria dubia Mc Vaugh; 12) Engenia guabiju Berg. The main conclusions based on the data analysed are: the fruits of some species present good general characteristics, mainly for fresh consumption, as high Vitamin C, sugars, pulp and other characteristics; 'Araca-boi' presents some good fruit characteristics, but is more adapted for processing, by its high acidity; Some species present low % of edible portion and need to be improved to gain commercial acceptance. mainly the 'cabeludinha' and 'cambuca'.

Although the Brazilian sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon lalandii (Muller and Henle, 1839), is an inshore species widely distributed in the Western Atlantic from Panama to Uruguay, there is little available information on its biology. During a long-term study of small coastal sharks caught by gill net fisheries in southeastern Brazil (PROJETO CACAO), 3643 specimens of R. lalandii were examined, comprising 61.3% of the total sharks, and including all sizes classes, from 30 to 78,5 cm TL., and weights from 100 to 2950 g. The length-weight relationships were not significantly different between sexes, Overall sex ratio favoured the males slightly at the rate of 1.3: 1. Sex ratios, however, did differ significantly between season and size classes. This species occurred in this area all year long. Three seasonal size-class Occurrence patterns were recognized: (1) between October and March, the juveniles were more frequents (2) from April to July, adults were most common, and (3) from August to September, neonates were most numerically abundant. Such patterns we to associated with reproductive tactics that may reduce intra-specific and inter-specific competition with hammerhead shark neonates (Sphyrna lewini). probably result in reduced natural mortality of the offspring during their first few months. The karyotypes, location of nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) and constitutive heterochromatin pattern of Sternopygus macrurus (Pisces, Gymnotoidei) of natural populations from the Amazon River, Sao Francisco River and Tiete River (the last belonging to the Upper Parana River system) are reported. All specimens had 2n = 46 chromosomes and presented small differences in karyotypic formulae, but populations of each river basin had a different fixed NOR phenotype. The loss of the satellite and a gradual deletion of the heterochromatin block adjacent to the NOR may be the origin of the variants. The possible mechanism of fixation of the NOR phenotypes, and the implications of the occurrence of intraspecific differences in fixed NOR phenotype in this species are discussed.

The immature development of pharaoh's ant, Monomorium pharaonis, workers was s died in a naturally collected Brazilian population. Three larval instars were confirmed by measuring maximal cephalic widths in cohorts of known age. Minimum egg to adult duration was 25 days, while the maximum duration was 54 days, both of which are larger than those reported for European populations. Larval instar development is cyclical at the colony level, suggesting reproductive bursts followed by lower reproductive activity of the queens.

The chromosomes of Bufo crucifer, B. ictericus, and B. pamacnemis were studied by conventional staining as well as with C banding and NOR techniques. These species have a diploid number of 2n = 22 and identical karyotypes, composed of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. The C banding patterns and NOR data indicate that these species of Bufo are not differentiated by the distribution and amount of constitutive heterochromatin or the position of the nucleolar organizer regions.
