During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 210, a greatly expanded sedimentary sequence of continuous Cretaceous black shales was recovered at Site 1276. This section corresponds to the Hatteras Formation, which has been documented widely in the North Atlantic Ocean. The cored sequence extends from the lowermost Albian, or possibly uppermost Aptian, to the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary and is characterized by numerous gravity-flow deposits and sporadic, finely laminated black shales. The sequence also includes several sedimentary intervals with high total organic carbon (TOC) contents, in several instances of probable marine origin that may record oceanic anoxic events (OAE). These layers might correspond to the Cenomanian-Turonian OAE 2; the mid-Cenomanian event; and OAE 1b, 1c, and 1d in the Albian. In addition, another interval with geochemical characteristics similar to OAE-type layers was recognized in the Albian, although it does not correspond to any of the known OAEs. This study investigates the origin of the organic matter contained within these black shale intervals using TOC and CaCO3 contents, Corg/Ntot ratios, organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes, trace metal composition, and rock-eval analyses. Most of these black shale intervals, especially OAE 2 and 1b, are characterized by low 15N values (<0) commonly observed in mid-Cretaceous black shales, which seem to reflect the presence of an altered nitrogen cycle with rates of nitrogen fixation significantly higher than in the modern ocean.

The last glacial-interglacial transition or Termination I (T I) is well documented in the Black Sea, whereas little is known about climate and environmental dynamics during the penultimate Termination (T II). Here we present a multi-proxy study based on a sediment core from the SE Black Sea covering the penultimate glacial and almost the entire Eemian interglacial (133.5 ±0.7-122.5 ±1.7 ka BP). Proxies comprise ice-rafted debris (IRD), O and Sr isotopes as well as Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, and U/Ca ratios of benthic ostracods, organic and inorganic sediment geochemistry, as well as TEX86 and UK'37derived water temperatures. The ending penultimate glacial (MIS 6, 133.5 to 129.9 ±0.7 ka BP) is characterised by mean annual lake surface temperatures of about 9°C as estimated from the TEX86 palaeothermometer. This period is impacted by two Black Sea melt water pulses (BSWP-II-1 and 2) as indicated by very low Sr/Ca ostracods but high sedimentary K/Al values. Anomalously high radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ostracod values (max. 0.70945) during BSWP-II-2 suggest a potential Himalayan source communicated via the Caspian Sea. The T II warming started at 129.9 ±0.7 ka BP, witnessed by abrupt disappearance of IRD, increasing d18O ostracod values, and a first TEX86 derived temperature rise of about 2.5°C. A second, abrupt warming step to ca. 15.5°C as the prelude of the Eemian warm period is documented at 128.3 ka BP. The Mediterranean-Black Sea reconnection most likely occurred at 128.1 ±0.7 ka BP as demonstrated by increasing Sr/Ca ostracods and U/Ca ostracods values. The disappearance of ostracods and TOC contents >2% document the onset of Eemian sapropel formation at 127.6 ka BP. During sapropel formation, TEX86 temperatures dropped and stabilised at around 9°C, while UK'37 temperatures remain on average 17°C. This difference is possibly caused by a habitat shift of Thaumarchaeota communities from surface towards nutrient-rich deeper and colder waters located above the gradually establishing halo-and redoxcline.

Thirty-six different geochemical and foraminiferal analyses were conducted on samples collected at closely spaced intervals across the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary exposed at Caravaca, Spain. A rapid reduction in the gradient between d13C values in fine fraction carbonate and benthic foraminiferal calcite and a decrease in the abundance of phosphorus (a proxy for organic carbon) and calcium were recorded in sediments 0-0.5 cm above the K/T boundary. These trends imply that an abrupt mass mortality occurred among pelagic organisms, leading to a significant reduction in the flux of organic carbon to the seafloor. In addition, variations in sulfur isotope ratios, the hydrocarbon-generating potential of kerogen (measured as the hydrogen index), and foraminiferal indices of dissolved oxygen level all imply that a rapid decrease in dissolved oxygen was coincident with the d13C event. Evidence of the low oxygen event has also been recognized in Japan and New Zealand, suggesting that intermediate water oxygen minima were widely developed during earliest Danian time. A threefold increase in the kaolinite/illite ratio and a 1.2 per mill decrease in d18O (carbonate fine fraction) were recorded in the basal 0.1-2 cm of Danian age sediments. These trends suggest that atmospheric warming and an increase in surface water temperature occurred 0-3 kyr after the d13C event. Recovery in the difference between d13C values in the carbonate fine fraction and in benthic foraminiferal calcite as well as increases in phosphorus and calcium contents occur at the base of planktonic foraminiferal Zone Pla, implying that an increase in primary productivity commenced some 13 kyr after the K/T boundary.

The transport and deposition of terrestrially derived organic matter (TOM) into the ocean is an important but poorly constrained aspect of the modern global carbon cycle. A preliminary study of Late Quaternary sediments from the Congo deep sea fan (ODP leg 175, site 1075, 2 km water depth) and four surface samples from associated cores has confirmed the presence of proposed soil-specific bacteriohopanepolyol biomarkers (BHPs) including adenosylhopane, in samples to a depth of 89 m. Concentrations of soil marker BHPs are high in the upper sediment section (to 49 m) and the closest related surface sample (4913), supporting the case for these molecular markers as novel proxies for soil organic carbon (SOC) supply via riverine transport and subsequent burial. Distinct peaks for the markers at about 21, 34 and 60 m below surface level tentatively imply that the rate of TOM discharge from tropical Africa significantly increased at these times, possibly associated with periods of reduced soil stability in the Congo catchment.

During the "RV Polarstem"-Expedition ARK VIII/2 sediment samples were obtained at the continental slope of NW-Spitsbergen. Detailed sedimentological and geochemical analysis were carried out at two undisturbed box cores (PS2122-1GKG, PS2123-2GKG) as well as two gravity cores (PS2122-1SL, PS2123-2SL). The following parameters were deterrnined: Organic carbon, nitrogen and carbonate contents, hydrogen index, stable isotopes, ice rafted debris, grain-size distribution and biogenic opal. The main objective of this study was the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental changes off the northwest coast of Spitsbergen during the last glacial/interglacial-cycle, i.e., during the last about 128.000 years. The results of the investigations can be summarized as follows: - During isotope stage 1 (Holocene) and 5.5 (Eemian Interglacial), light stable isotopes (d180: 3.4-2 %o; d13C: 0.26-0.5 %o), increased bioturbation, high content of planktonic foraminifera and biogenic opal and low quantity of ice-rafted material, indicate seasonally ice-free conditions along the northwest coast due to the intfluence of the Westspitsbergen Current. - Additionally, the sediment characteristics of the middle of isotope stage 2 (Last Glacial Maximum) and at the end of stage 3 confirms an inflow of warmer Atlantic water. The highest production of planktonic and benthic foraminifera (N. pachyderma sin., Cassidulina teretis) (CaC03: 10 %) may reflect the expansion of the 'Whalers Bay'-Polynya as a result of the influence of the Westspitsbergen Current. Presumably, occasionally open-ice conditions provide sufficient precipitation to buildup the Svalbard/Barents Ice Sheet. - The time intervals for the glacier advances on Svalbard given by Mangerud et al. (1992), can be correlated with increased accumulation of ice-rafted material in the sediments at the northwest coast of Spitsbergen. Especially during isotope stage 4 and at the beginning of the Last Glacial Maximum (isotope stage 2), a drastically increased supply of coarse terrigenous material occurs. The high accumulation rate (0.18-0.21 g/cm**2/ka) of terrigenous organic carbon is indicated by high C/N ratios (until 16) and low hydrogen index (50 mg HC/gC). In constrast to deep sea sediments in the Fram-Strait (Hebbeln 1992), the glacier advance between 118.000 and 108.000 years B.P. ist documented in the continental slope sediments. - At the end of the Weichselian ice age, the deglaciation at the northwest coast starts with a typical melt-water signal in the stables isotope record (d18O: 3.5 %o; d13C: -0.16 %o) and high contents of gravel (6-13 %). The signal can be assigned to an event at the westcoast of Spitsbergen (core NP90-39), dated to 14.500 years B.P. (Andersen et al. 1993).

Here, we present a first (low-resolution) biomarker sea-ice proxy record from the High Arctic (southern Lomonosov Ridge), going back in time to about 60 ka (MIS 3 to MIS 1). Variable concentrations of the sea-ice diatom specific highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) with 25 carbon atoms ("IP25"), in combination with the phytoplankton biomarker brassicasterol, suggest variable seasonal sea-ice coverage and open-water productivity during MIS 3. During most of MIS 2, the spring to summer sea-ice margin significantly extended towards the south, resulting in a drastic decrease in phytoplankton productivity. During the Early Holocene Climate Optimum, brassicasterol reached its maximum, interpreted as signal for elevated phytoplankton productivity due to a significantly reduced sea-ice cover. During the mid-late Holocene, IP25 increased and brassicasterol decreased, indicating extended sea-ice cover and reduced phytoplankton productivity, respectively. The HBI diene/IP25 ratios probably reached maximum values during the Bølling-Allerød warm period and decreased during the Holocene, suggesting a correlation with sea-surface temperature.

A series of molecular organic markers were determined in surface sediments from the Gulf of Genoa (Ligurian Sea) in order to evaluate their potential for palaeo-environmental reconstructions. Allochthonous input can be characterized by the distributions of n-C29 and n-C31 alkanes, n-C26 and n-C28 alkanols and branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), whose concentrations are generally highest near the river mouths. In the open basin however, terrestrial n-alkanes and n-alkanols may have an additional, aeolian source. Autochthonous input is represented by crenarchaeol and isoprenoid GDGTs. Their concentrations are highest in the open basin showing the preference of Thaumarchaeota for oligotrophic waters. Indications of a significant degradation of sterols and C37 alkenones exclude these lipids as reliable productivity proxies. Using terrestrial and aquatic lipids as end-members allows estimating the percentage of terrestrial organic matter between 20% and 58% in the coastal area decreasing to 1 to 30% in the deep basin. The spatial distribution of sea surface temperature (SST) estimates using the alkenone-based UK'37 index is very similar to the autumnal (November) mean satellite-based SST distribution. Conversely, TEXH86-derived SST estimates are close to winter SSTs in the coastal area and summer SSTs in the open basin. This pattern reflects presumably a shift in the main production of Thaumarchaeota from the coastal area in winter to the open basin in summer. This study represents a major prerequisite for the future application of lipid biomarkers on sediment cores from the Gulf of Genoa.

The late Volgian (early "Boreal" Berriasian) sapropels of the Hekkingen Formation of the central Barents Sea show total organic carbon (TOC) contents from 3 to 36 wt%. The relationship between TOC content and sedimentation rate (SR), and the high Mo/Al ratios indicate deposition under oxygen-free bottom-water conditions, and suggest that preservation under anoxic conditions has largely contributed to the high accumulation of organic carbon. Hydrogen index values obtained from Rock-Eval pyrolysis are exceptionally high, and the organic matter is characterized by well-preserved type II kerogen. However, the occurrence of spores, freshwater algae, coal fragments, and charred land-plant remains strongly suggests proximity to land. Short-term oscillations, probably reflecting Milankovitch-type cyclicity, are superimposed on the long-term trend of constantly changing depositional conditions during most of the late Volgian. Progressively smaller amounts of terrestrial organic matter and larger amounts of marine organic matter upwards in the core section may have been caused by a continuous sea-level rise.

Two high-resolution sediment cores from eastern Fram Strait have been investigated for sea subsurface and surface temperature variability during the Holocene (the past ca 12,000 years). The transfer function developed by Husum and Hald (2012) has been applied to sediment cores in order to reconstruct fluctuations of sea subsurface temperatures throughout the period. Additional biomarker and foraminiferal proxy data are used to elucidate variability between surface and subsurface water mass conditions, and to conclude on the Holocene climate and oceanographic variability on the West Spitsbergen continental margin. Results consistently reveal warm sea surface to subsurface temperatures of up to 6 °C until ca 5 cal ka BP, with maximum seawater temperatures around 10 cal ka BP, likely related to maximum July insolation occurring at that time. Maximum Atlantic Water (AW) advection occurred at surface and subsurface between 10.6 and 8.5 cal ka BP based on both foraminiferal and dinocyst temperature reconstructions. Probably, a less-stratified, ice-free, nutrient-rich surface ocean with strong AW advection prevailed in the eastern Fram Strait between 10 and 9 cal ka BP. Weakened AW contribution is found after ca 5 cal ka BP when subsurface temperatures strongly decrease with minimum values between ca 4 and 3 cal ka BP. Cold late Holocene conditions are furthermore supported by high planktic foraminifer shell fragmentation and high d18O values of the subpolar planktic foraminifer species Turborotalita quinqueloba. While IP25-associated indices as well as dinocyst data suggest a sustained cooling due to a decrease in early summer insolation and consequently sea-ice increase since about 7 cal ka BP in surface waters, planktic foraminiferal data including stable isotopes indicate a slight return of stronger subsurface AW influx since ca 3 cal ka BP. The observed decoupling of surface and subsurface waters during the later Holocene is most likely attributed to a strong pycnocline layer separating cold sea-ice fed surface waters from enhanced subsurface AW advection. This may be related to changes in North Atlantic subpolar versus subtropical gyre activity.

Stable isotope records for carbon and oxygen in bulk carbonates, carbon in bulk organic matter, and for total and chromium-reducible sulfur in a lacustrine sediment core from Lake Steisslingen (Southwest Germany) show several distinct and abrupt shifts during the last 15,000 years. Variations in the isotopic composition of authigenic carbonates indicate two major phases in the lake history. In the pre-Holocene, the hydrological budget of the lake was apparently stable. Variations of delta18O values of authigenic carbonates were, therefore, dominantly controlled by temperature changes. A decrease in the delta18Ocarb values of about 2 per mil at the Allerød/Younger Dryas transition is interpreted as a drop in mean annual air temperatures of approximately 5°C. An abrupt temperature increase of a similar magnitude is inferred at the Younger Dryas/Preboreal boundary. Throughout most of the Holocene, the isotopic composition of authigenic carbonates was influenced by marked changes in the hydrological budget of the lake. A major positive excursion in the delta13Ccarb and delta18Ocarb values at the beginning of the Atlantic and a smaller one in the Preboreal were related to evaporation effects, which indicate that dry climatic conditions must have prevailed at that time. A simultaneous increase in delta13C values of bulk organic matter at the beginning of the Atlantic suggests a high level of productivity in the lake. As a consequence, aqueous sulfate became limited as indicated by variations in the delta34S values of total and chromium-reducible sedimentary sulfur. Therefore, we conclude that the beginning of the Atlantic was characterized not only by dry but also by warm climatic conditions, which triggered a higher productivity in the lake. In the Subatlantic sediments, large variations in carbon, oxygen, and sulfur isotope ratios were observed as a result of human activities, causing considerable perturbations in the biogeochemical element cycling of Lake Steisslingen. Results obtained by the study of the continuous 15 ka record of Lake Steisslingen document clearly that isotopic proxy data from lacustrine sediments can provide useful information on environmental and climatic changes of local, regional, and in the case of the Younger Dryas event, of even hemispherical significance.

Data used in the study of the evolution of soils of Lake La Thuile catchment, in relation with the long sediment sequence of the lake. Data of pH, Loss On Ignition, Oxygen and Hydrogen Index (Rock-eval analyses) and mineral geochemistry (Portative XRF, Al2O3/TiO2 and K2O/TiO2 ratios) are available for each soil horizons that have been studied in the catchment. For sediments, data of Oxygen and Hydrogen Index (Rock-eval analyses), mineral geochemistry (Portative XRF, Al2O3/TiO2 and K2O/TiO2 ratios), erosion, soil evolution modelization and the ages are available according to depth.
