Decomposing differences in total factor productivity across firm size

This paper investigates the extent to which the gap in total factor productivity between small and large firms is due to differences in the endowment of factors determining productivity and to the returns associated with these factors. We place particular emphasis on the contribution of differences in the propensity to innovate and in the use of skilled labor across firms of different size. Empirical evidence from a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms corroborates that both differences in endowments and returns to innovation and skilled labor significantly contribute to the productivity gap between small and large firms. In addition, it is observed that the contribution of innovation to this gap is caused only by differences in quantity, while differences in returns have no effect; in the case of human capital, however, most of the effect can be attributed to increasing differences in returns between small and large firms.

Los requisitos del Negocio que requieren un gran crecimiento generan mayor complejidad en los Centros de Cómputo.Son los administradores quienes necesitan gestionar el creciente volumen de datos, aplicaciones, y usuarios, así como la rápida proliferación de los servidores y los diferentes sistemas operativos. En este proyecto se pretende reducir la complejidad en la gestión de los Centros de Cómputo, combinando la automatización de la gestión del ciclo de vida y todas las medidas de contingencia necesarias para mantener la integridad de los mismos.

Diseminación de enteroparasitos por Calliphoridae (Insecta, Diptera)

It is establish the dissemination enteroparasite by Calliphoridae in a district situated around by Federal Capital of Argentina. The species implicated in this dispersal are: Phaenicia sericata (meigen, 1826); Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830; Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann, 1818) and Phaenicia eximia (Wiedemann, 1819). Fifty two flies was studies, thirty four (65%) to belong at the family Calliphoridae. Of this thirteen (38%) have eggs of taeniid and cysts of Entamoeba coli (Grassi, 1879) and Giardia lamblia Styles, 1915.

Malaria vaccine development using synthetic peptides as a technical platform.

The review covers the development of synthetic peptides as vaccine candidates for Plasmodium falciparum- and Plasmodium vivax-induced malaria from its beginning up to date and the concomitant progress of solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) that enables the production of long peptides in a routine fashion. The review also stresses the development of other complementary tools and actions in order to achieve the long sought goal of an efficacious malaria vaccine.

In vivo conditional Pax4 overexpression in mature islet β-cells prevents stress-induced hyperglycemia in mice.

OBJECTIVE To establish the role of the transcription factor Pax4 in pancreatic islet expansion and survival in response to physiological stress and its impact on glucose metabolism, we generated transgenic mice conditionally and selectively overexpressing Pax4 or a diabetes-linked mutant variant (Pax4R129 W) in β-cells. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Glucose homeostasis and β-cell death and proliferation were assessed in Pax4- or Pax4R129 W-overexpressing transgenic animals challenged with or without streptozotocin. Isolated transgenic islets were also exposed to cytokines, and apoptosis was evaluated by DNA fragmentation or cytochrome C release. The expression profiles of proliferation and apoptotic genes and β-cell markers were studied by immunohistochemistry and quantitative RT-PCR. RESULTS Pax4 but not Pax4R129 W protected animals against streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia and isolated islets from cytokine-mediated β-cell apoptosis. Cytochrome C release was abrogated in Pax4 islets treated with cytokines. Interleukin-1β transcript levels were suppressed in Pax4 islets, whereas they were increased along with NOS2 in Pax4R129 W islets. Bcl-2, Cdk4, and c-myc expression levels were increased in Pax4 islets while MafA, insulin, and GLUT2 transcript levels were suppressed in both animal models. Long-term Pax4 expression promoted proliferation of a Pdx1-positive cell subpopulation while impeding insulin secretion. Suppression of Pax4 rescued this defect with a concomitant increase in pancreatic insulin content. CONCLUSIONS Pax4 protects adult islets from stress-induced apoptosis by suppressing selective nuclear factor-κB target genes while increasing Bcl-2 levels. Furthermore, it promotes dedifferentiation and proliferation of β-cells through MafA repression, with a concomitant increase in Cdk4 and c-myc expression.

La present memòria descriu el projecte final: Atlas, servidor de dades geoespaciales, descàrrega d'informació cartogràfica, en l'es desenvolupa la metodologia necessària i s'expliquen els passos per a la creació d'un geoportal, un objectiu especifico del projecte és inserir i assolir el funcionament de l'eina que permet realitzar les descàrregues de la informació cartogràfica, que un usuari final desitgi obtenir des d'un ordinador personal, entre les solucions tecnologies emprades per a assolir la descàrrega de cartografia digital es pot esmentar les solucions del Grup Esri: ArcIMS i Data Delivery Extension (DDE) i per a visualitzar la informació cartogràfica es va utilitzar Openlayers.

Análisis jurisprudencial del Tribunal de Justicia de las Comunidades Europeas en relación al concepto de efecto directo en las directivas

La Directiva és una norma de resultat. Quan els Estats membres incompleixen la seva obligació de transposar la Directiva en termini i correctament al Dret intern, el principi d’efecte directe, com a construcció jurisprudencial, permet als particulars invocar la Directiva en front de l’Estat. El Tribunal de Justícia de les Comunitats Europees és contrari a l’aplicació de l’efecte directe horitzontal o entre particulars de la Directiva. Si l’efecte directe no és d’aplicació, per pal•liar l’ incompliment entren en joc el principi d’interpretació conforme o el principi de responsabilitat de l’Estat infractor pels danys ocasionats.

Efficience of human Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccine candidates in Aotus lemurinus monkeys

The protective efficacy of several recombinat and a synthetic Plasmodium falciparum protein was assessed in Aoutus monkeys. The rp41 aldolase, the 190L fragment of the MSA-1 protein and fusion 190L-CS. T3 protein containg the CS. T3 helper "universal epitope were emulsified in Freund's adjuvants and injected 3 times in groups of 4-5 monkeys each one. The synthetic polymer Spf (66)30 also emulsified in Freund's adjuvants was injected 6 times. Control groups for both experiments were immunized with saline solution in the same adjuvant following the same schedules. Serology for malaria specific antibodies showed seroconversion in monkeys immunized with the recombinant proteins but not in those immunized with the polymer nor in the controls. Challenge was performed with the 10 (elevado a quinta potência) parasites from the P. falciparum FVO isolate. Neither rp41 nor SPf (66)30 induced protection, whereas 190L induced significant delay of parasitemia. The fusion of the CS. T3 epitope to 190L significantly increased is protective capacity.

Complex contact manifolds and S1 actions

We prove rigidity and vanishing theorems for several holomorphic Euler characteristics on complex contact manifolds admitting holomorphic circle actions preserving the contact structure. Such vanishings are reminiscent of those of LeBrun and Salamon on Fano contact manifolds but under a symmetry assumption instead of a curvature condition.
