This work reports the synthesis of a wide range of ferrocenyl-amino acids and other derivatives in excellent yield. Diverse amino acid containing azides were synthesized and ligated to ferrocene employing click reaction to access ferrocenyl amino acids. Chiral alcohols, esters, diols, amines containing azido group were tagged to ferrocene via click reaction to generate ferrocene derived chiral derivatives. A novel strategy for direct incorporation of ferrocene into a peptide and a new route to 1, 1′disubstituted ferrocene amino acid derivative are reported.

A polymer containing electron-rich aromatic donors (1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN)) was coerced into a folded state by an external folding agent that contained an electron-deficient aromatic acceptor (pyromellitic diimide (PM)) unit. The donor-containing polymer was designed to carry a tertiary amine moiety in the linking segment, which served as an H-bonding site for reinforcing the interaction with the acceptor containing folding agent that also bore a carboxylic acid group. The H-bonding interaction of the carboxylic acid and the tertiary amine brings the PDI unit between two adjacent DAN units along the polymer backbone to induce charge-transfer (C-T) interactions, and this in turn causes the polymer chain to form a pleated structure. Evidence for the formation of such a pleated structure was obtained from NMR titration studies and also by monitoring the C-T band in their UV-visible spectra. By varying the length of the segment that links the PDI acceptor to the carboxylic acid group, we showed that the most effective folding agent was the one that had a single carbon spacer, as evident from the highest value of the association constant. Control experiments with propionic acid clearly demonstrated the importance of the additional C-T interactions for venerating the folded structures. Further, solution viscosity measurements in the presence of varying amounts of the folding agent revealed a gradual stiffening of the chain in the case of the PDI carrying carboxylic acid, whereas no such affect was seen in the case of simple propionic acid. These observations were supported by D FT calculations of the interactions of a dimeric model of the polymer with the various folding agents; here too the stability of the complex was seen to be highest in the case of the single carbon spacer.

The formal charge distributions in and the dipole moments of some organophosphines and arsines have been calculated, and the dipole moments of (p-chlorophenyl)dichlorophosphine (2.28 D) and (p-bromophenyl)dichlorophosphine (2.04 D) have been determined in benzene at 35° C. The differences between the observed and the calculated moments are explained in terms of dπ---pπ back-bonding and hyperconjugative effects in alkylhaloarsines. The mesomeric effects operating in the aromatic systems are evaluated by comparing the moments with those for the corresponding aliphatic systems. In unsaturated compounds the differences are attributed to mesomeric effects involving the expansion of arsenic valence shell.

Background: Stabilization strategies adopted by proteins under extreme conditions are very complex and involve various kinds of interactions. Recent studies have shown that a large proportion of proteins have their N- and C-terminal elements in close contact and suggested they play a role in protein folding and stability. However, the biological significance of this contact remains elusive. Methodology: In the present study, we investigate the role of N- and C-terminal residue interaction using a family 10 xylanase (BSX) with a TIM-barrel structure that shows stability under high temperature, alkali pH, and protease and SDS treatment. Based on crystal structure,an aromatic cluster was identified that involves Phe4, Trp6 and Tyr343 holding the Nand C-terminus together; this is a unique and important feature of this protein that might be crucial for folding and stabilityunder poly-extreme conditions. Conclusion: A series of mutants was created to disrupt this aromatic cluster formation and study the loss of stability and function under given conditions. While the deletions of Phe4 resulted in loss of stability, removal of Trp6 and Tyr343 affected in vivo folding and activity. Alanine substitution with Phe4, Trp6 and Tyr343 drastically decreased stability under all parameters studied. Importantly, substitution of Phe4 with Trp increased stability in SDS treatment.Mass spectrometry results of limited proteolysis further demonstrated that the Arg344 residue is highly susceptible to trypsin digestion in sensitive mutants such as DF4, W6A and Y343A, suggesting again that disruption of the Phe4-Trp6-Tyr343 (F-W-Y) cluster destabilizes the N-and C-terminal interaction. Our results underscore the importance of N- and C-terminal contact through aromatic interactions in protein folding and stability under extreme conditions, and these results may be useful to improve the stability of other proteins under suboptimal conditions.

In the title Mannich base, C20H21N3O3, an isatin derivative of thymol the O-CH2-C(=O)-N(H)-N fragment connecting the aromatic and fused-ring systems is approximately planar, with the N-N single bond in a Zmconfiguration. The amino H atom of this N-N fragment is intramolecularly hydrogen bonded to the carbonyl O atom of the indolinone fused ring as well as to the phenoxy O atom of the aromat ring. The amino H atom of the indoline fused ring forms a hydrogen bond with the double-bond O atom of an adjacent molecule, this hydrogen bond giving rise to a linear chain motif.

In five-membered aromatic heterocyclic ring systems, a relation between the ratio of the distance between the two α to the two β protons and the covalent radii of the heteroatom is given. It is found that a similar relation is valid for the van der Waals radii also.

Polymeric peroxides have received renewed attention in the recent past, in view of some significant explorations of their physical and chemical properties. The potential of polymeric peroxides as a class, as specialized fuel, and the need to synthesize such new materials have been reported in the literature. So far, this class of polymers is constituted only by a dozen or so polyperoxides. From the point of view of their use in propellant applications, the importance lies in making materials which are easy to handle etc., unlike the earlier reported poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP), a sticky semi-solid mass. However, judging from the better combustion characteristics, exploring aromatic monomers was thought worthwhile. In this preliminary communication, the synthesis of a new polymeric peroxide made from 1,4-divinylbenzene is reported. The polymer obtained was in powder form and had an exothermic heat of degradation approximately equal to that of PSP. 4 ref.--AA

The synthesis of manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes of a new ligand 2-thiophene-2-yl-3(thiophene-2-carboxylidene-amino)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (TTCADQ) is described. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, spectral (u.v.-vis., i.r., 1D n.m.r., 2D hetcor and e.p.r.) and thermal studies. The formation of 1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one rather than hydrazone, in the reaction of aromatic aldehyde and o-aminobenzoylhydrazide is proved by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 2D hetcor n.m.r. studies. On the basis of elemental analysis, u.v.-vis.spectroscopy and magnetic moment studies, six coordinate geometry for all the complexes was proposed. The i.r. spectral studies reveal the bidentate behaviour of the ligand.

Cibacron blue is a potent inhibitor of 3-HBA-6-hydroxylase at a concentration < 1 mu M. Kinetic analyses revealed that at a concentration below 0.5 mu M the dye behaves as an uncompetitive inhibitor with respect to 3-HBA and competes with NADH for the same site on the enzyme. The alteration of the near-UV CD spectrum and quenching of the emission fluorescence of the enzyme by cibacron blue indicates a significant alteration in the environment of aromatic amino acid residues due to a stacking interaction and subtle conformatiodnal changes in the enzyme. The concentration-dependent quenching of the intrinsic fluorescence of the enzyme by cibacron blue was employed to determine the binding parameters such as association constant (K-a) and stoichiometry (r) for the enzyme-dye complex.

Ammonium and alkali metal tetrafluoroborates have been prepared by the cation exchange reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with the corresponding hydroxides/halides. The reaction of pyridinium tetrafluoroborate with primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl amines at room temperature gives rise to mono-, di- and tri-alkylammonium tetrafluoroborates, respectively. The yields are good and the samples are of high purity. The products have been characterised by elemental analysis, IR and PMR spectroscopy. The spectral data for most of the compounds are reported for the first time.

A series of molecular complexes, both co-crystals and salts, of a triazole drug-alprazolam-with carboxylic acids, boric acid, boronic acids, and phenols have been analyzed with respect to heterosynthons present in the crystal structures. In all cases, the triazole ring behaves as an efficient hydrogen bond acceptor with the acidic coformers. The hydrogen bond patterns exhibited with aromatic carboxylic acids were found to depend on the nature and position of the substituents. Being a strong acid, 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid forms a salt with alprazolam. With aliphatic dicarboxylic acids alprazolam forms hydrates and the water molecules play a central role in synthon formation and crystal packing. The triazole ring makes two distinct heterosynthons in the molecular complex with boric acid. Boronic acids and phenols form consistent hydrogen bond patterns, and these are seemingly independent of the substitutional effects. Boronic acids form noncentrosymmetric cyclic synthons, while phenols form O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds with the triazole ring. Continuing urbanization is a crucial driver of land transformation, having widespread impacts on virtually all ecosystems. Terrestrial ecosystems, including disturbed ones, are dependent on soils, which provide a multitude of ecosystem services. As soils are always directly and/or indirectly impacted through land transformation, land cover change causes soil change. Knowledge of ecosystem properties and functions in soils is increasing in importance as humans continue to concentrate into already densely-populated areas. Urban soils often have hampered functioning due to various disturbances resulting from human activity. Innovative solutions are needed to bring the lacking ecosystem services and quality of life to these urban environments. For instance, the ecosystem services of the urban green infrastructure may be substantially improved through knowledge of their functional properties. In the research forming this thesis, the impacts of four plant species (Picea abies, Calluna vulgaris, Lotus corniculatus and Holcus lanatus) on belowground biota and regulatory ecosystem services were investigated in two different urban soil types. The retention of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus in the plant-soil system, decomposition of plant litter, primary production, and the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined in the field and under laboratory conditions. The main objective of the research was to determine whether the different plant species (representing traits with varying litter decomposability) will give rise to dissimilar urban belowground communities with differing ecological functions. Microbial activity as well as the abundance of nematodes and enchytraeid worm biomass was highest below the legume L. corniculatus. L. corniculatus and the grass H. lanatus, producing labile or intermediate quality litter, enhanced the proportion of bacteria in the soil rhizosphere, while the recalcitrant litter-producing shrub C. vulgaris and the conifer P. abies stimulated the growth of fungi. The loss of nitrogen from the plant-soil system was small for H. lanatus and the combination of C. vulgaris + P. abies, irrespective of their energy channel composition. These presumably nitrogen-conservative plant species effectively diminished the leaching losses from the plant-soil systems with all the plant traits present. The laboratory experiment revealed a difference in N allocation between the plant traits: C. vulgaris and P. abies sequestered significantly more N in aboveground shoots in comparison to L. corniculatus and H. Lanatus. Plant rhizosphere effects were less clear for phosphorus retention, litter decomposition and the degradation of PAH compounds. This may be due to the relatively short experimental durations, as the maturation of the plant-soil system is likely to take a considerably longer time. The empirical studies of this thesis demonstrated that the soil communities rapidly reflect changes in plant coverage, and this has consequences for the functionality of soils. The energy channel composition of soils can be manipulated through plants, which was also supported by the results of the separate meta-analysis conducted in this thesis. However, further research is needed to understand the linkages between the biological community properties and ecosystem services in strongly human-modified systems.
