Electrolytes may modify the physical-chemical characteristics of colloidal particle interfaces in suspension, which can favour gel or aggregate formation. The influence of NH4Cl loading on the aggregation and gelation of SnO2 colloidal suspensions was investigated using measurements of rheology, turbidity and infrared spectra. A rapid aggregate growth for samples with Cl- > 20 mM was observed. With increasing age, gelation was observed due to formation of interaggregate bonds. For concentration of Cl- between 20 and 9 mM, the aggregation process was slower allowing the formation of gel with a network which was not destroyed as the gel was submitted to a small rate of shear. As aging continues, the condensation reaction between OH groups gave rise to the formation of Sn-O bonds, irrespective of the electrolyte loading. © 1992 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. Eu3+ fluorescence spectroscopy was used as a probe to study the changes in local arrangements of tin oxyhydroxide precipitate → sol → gel → glass conversion. Electronic transition intensities and 5D0 excited state lifetime variations were followed during the entire process. Adsorption of Eu3+ ions on the colloid and changes of chemical interactions occurring in each step are described. © 1992 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of the electrolyte (NH+ 4, Cl-) on the drying of SnO2 hydrogels was investigated by linear shrinkage, mass loss, gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Results show that the drying mechanism for monolithic SnO2 gels is highly dependent on the concentration of the electrolyte solution inside the pores. For higher concentrations, the drying process is governed by capillary forces while for the smaller ones (≤20 mM) syneresis shrinkage becomes predominant just before the end of the first drying period. This phenomenon is related to condensation reaction among the superficial OH groups and may hamper formation of monolithic SnO2. © 1992 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. All rights reserved.

Light scattering, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction are used to determine the morphology and size of particles in diluted aqueous gel of tin (IV) oxyhydroxide. Data show that the gel is composed of spherical 2-3 nm sized crystalline particles aggregated as rigid branched chains. It is suggested that stiffness of chains results from dissolution-precipitation equilibria and chemical bonding between particles within the chains. © 1994.

Hydrothermal and solvothermal (isopropanol) treatments of gadolinium oxide and silica were investigated under different pressure and temperature conditions. Products were examined by infrared vibrational spectroscopy (IR), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis (DTA, TG). Hexagonal gadolinium hydroxide was obtained in hydrothermal conditions, even in presence of silica, while no change was observed from isopropanolic medium treatment. Hydrothermally treated samples are more reactive as precursors for solid state reactions in inorganic synthesis.

Glasses of composition 40InF3-20SrF2-16BaF2-20ZnF 2-2GdF3-2NaF (mol%) have been prepared under controlled atmosphere. The time response of the stresses under the application of a constant strain was determined by microellipsometer technique, performed in ambient atmosphere at T < Tg = 294°C. The glasses show a Newtonian behavior at small stress level. During the relaxation process, very small grooves perpendicular to the applied strain appeared on the glass surface and affected its behavior after a time. The formation of these grooves is associated with the ambient atmosphere. Measurements in dry atmosphere showed that humidity was an important parameter in the relaxation process.

This paper describes the stabilizing effect of MgF2 on the binary system InF3-BaF2. A complete investigation of the In-Ba-Mg system led to samples up to 5 mm in thickness. Further optimization of this system was achieved by incorporation of other fluorides, resulting in increased resistance to devitrification. Thermal and optical data are reported.

The use of polymeric precursors was employed in preparing SrTiO3 thin films by dip coating using Si (111) as substrate. Crack free films were obtained after sintering at temperatures ranging from 550 to 1000°C. The microstructure, characterized by SEM, shows the development of dense polycrystalline films with smooth surface and mean grain size of 52 nm, for films sintered at 1000°C. Grazing incident angle XRD characterization of these films shows that the SrTiO3 phase crystallizes from an inorganic amorphous matrix. No intermediate crystalline phase was identified.

Magneto-optical rotation was measured at room temperature for glasses containing Bi2O3-CdO-GeO2 (BCG), and Bi2O3-PbO-GeO2-B2O3 (BPGP). A pulsed magnetic field between 50 and 80 KG was used to measure Faraday rotation at 632.8 nm as a function of the concentration of Bi and Cd for BCG and Bi and Pb for BPGB. Verdet constant as high as 0.162 min G-1 cm-1 at 632.8 nm for the BPGB sample with the highest concentrations of Bi and Cd was found. Verdet constant increases linearly with the heavy-metal concentration for the BPGB whereas it reaches some saturation for the BCG system. Measurements of the magneto-optical rotation at other wavelengths in the visible and the refractive index at 632.8 nm are also reported. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This study was conducted to observe the rat subcutaneous connective tissue reaction to the implanted dentin tubes filled with calcium hydroxide or mineral trioxide aggregate. The animals were sacrificed after 7 and 30 days, and the specimens were prepared for morphological study. Some undecalcified specimens were prepared for histological analysis with polarized light and Von Kossa technique for calcium. The results were similar for both studied materials. At the tube openings, there were Von Kossa-positive granules that were birefringent to polarized light. Next to these granulations, there was an irregular tissue like a bridge that was Von Kossa-positive. The dentin walls of the tubes exhibited in the tubules a structure highly birefringent to polarized light, usually like a layer and at different depths. The preparation and characterization of transparent glass-ceramics in the composition of 30Li2O:5ZrO2:xBaO:(100-x) SiO2 with x = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol% are described. Glasses were melted in a platinum crucible at 1100°C for 2 h and then heat-treated at 900°C for 3 h. The characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results indicate that there was a structural change in the glass-ceramics as the BaO concentration in the mixture increased. In the XRD patterns of samples without heat treatment, only the halo was observed. After heat treatment, the appearance of the materials was verified by X-ray diffraction peaks. The reorganization of the amorphous solid was confirmed by Raman and IR spectroscopy along with XPS and SEM, with a more homogeneous phase formation being observed.
