The analysis of 104 core-catcher samples from Site 603 resulted in a continuous palynological record from the middle Miocene to early Pleistocene. Two palynological zones could be established (Zone 2, below 380 m: high Pinus, Quercus, and Carya values; Zone 1, above 380 m: high Pinus, and Sphagnum values). The marine pollen record was found to reflect the history of the vegetation of the eastern United States, the flora from Zone 2 indicating a warmer climate than that from Zone 1, which depicts a climatic cooling trend. The onset of Western Boundary Undercurrent deposition had no noticeable effect on the pollen distribution in the marine sediments.

Benthic foraminifers have been studied in about 900 samples from Sites 642, 643, and 644 (ODP Leg 104, Voring Plateau), ranging in age from Eocene to Holocene. This sequence has been subdivided into seven assemblage zones. The Eocene to middle Miocene deposits are characterized by an agglutinated fauna. This reflects an environment causing dissolution of calcareous tests rather than the original living fauna. The upper Miocene to middle Pliocene deposits contain a diverse benthic foraminiferal fauna dominated by calcareous forms. The uppermost part of the sediment record, deposited during late Pliocene to Holocene, is characterized by many barren intervals and samples containing shallow-water species as well as ice-rafted material indicating glacial periods. Interglacials are reflected in samples containing a true oceanic foraminifer assemblage and no coarse clastic material.

The aim of this contribution is to supply summarized information on the distribution and numbers of marine mammals in the Antarctic. In relation to the topic of the workshop the question to be answered is: "Is there spatial or temporal variation in mammalian presence in the Antarctic area that has relevance to the operation of acoustic devices". If acoustic devices have impact on marine mammals, this does not stop at political borders. Nevertheless, since legal implementation of the Antarctic Environmental Protocol was the major stimulus behind the workshop, this contribution was asked to limit itself to the Antarctic Treaty area, that is south of 60°S.

Burn sepsis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with major burns. The use of topical anti-microbial agents has helped improve the survival in these patients. There are a number of anti-microbials available, one of which, Silvazine(TM) (1% silver sulphadiazine (SSD) and 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate), is used only in Australasia. No study, in vitro or clinical, had compared Silvazine(TM) with the new dressing Acticoat(TM). This study compared the anti-microbial activity of Silvazine(TM), Acticoa(TM) and 1% silver sulphadiazine (Flamazine(TM)) against eight common burn wound pathogens. Methods: Each organism was prepared as a suspension. A 10 mul inoculum of the chosen bacterial isolate (representing approximately between 104 and 105 total bacteria) was added to each of four vials, followed by samples of each dressing and a control. The broths were then incubated and 10 mul loops removed at specified intervals and transferred onto Horse Blood Agar. These plates were then incubated for 18 hours and a colony count was performed. Results: The data demonstrates that the combination of 1% SSD and 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate (Silvazine(TM)) results in the most effective killing of all bacteria. SSD and Acticoat(TM) had similar efficacies against a number of isolates, but Acticoat(TM) seemed only bacteriostatic against E. faecalis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Viable quantities of Enterobacter cloacae and Proteus mirabilis rei named at 24 h. Conclusion: The combination of 1% SSD and 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate (Silvazine(TM)) is a more effective anti-microbial against a number of burn wound pathogens in this in vitro study. Based on phage display optimization studies with human growth hormone (GH), it is thought that the biopotency of GH cannot be increased. This is proposed to be a result of the affinity of the first receptor for hormone far exceeding that which is required to trap the hormone long enough to allow diffusion of the second receptor to form the ternary complex, which initiates signaling. We report here that despite similar site 1 kinetics to the hGH/hGH receptor interaction, the potency of porcine GH for its receptor can be increased up to 5-fold by substituting hGH residues involved in site 1 binding into pGH. Based on extensive mutations and BIAcore studies, we show that the higher potency and site 1 affinity of hGH for the pGHR is primarily a result of a decreased off-rate associated with residues in the extended loop between helices 1 and 2 that interact with the two key tryptophans Trp(104) and Trp(169) in the receptor binding hot spot. Our mutagenic analysis has also identified a second determinant (Lys(165)), which in addition to His(169), restricts the ability of non-primate hormones to activate hGH receptor. The increased biopotency of GH that we observe can be explained by a model for GH receptor activation where subunit alignment is critical for effective signaling.

[Cu(hyetrz)3](CF3SO3)2·H2O [hyetrz = 4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole] represents the first structurally characterised ferromagnetically coupled CuII chain compound containing triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges. catena-[μ-Tris{4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole-N1,N2}copper(II)] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) hydrate (C14H23F6S2O10CuN9) crystallises in the triclinic space group Pl, a = 13.54(3), b = 14.37(3), c = 15.61(4) Å, α = 95.9(1), β = 104.9(1), γ = 106.5(1)°, V = 2763(11) Å3, Z = 4 (CuII units). The CuII ions are linked by triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges yielding an alternating chain with Cu1−Cu2 = 3.8842(4) Å and Cu2−Cu3 = 3.9354(4) Å. Analysis of the magnetic data according to a high-temperature series expansion gives a J value of +1.45(3) cm−1. We present the first combined dissolved hafnium (Hf) and neodymium (Nd) concentrations and isotope compositions of deep water masses from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Eight full depth profiles were analyzed for Hf and twelve for Nd. Hafnium concentrations are generally depleted in the upper few hundred meters ranging between 0.2 pmol/kg and 0.4 pmol/kg and increase to relatively constant values of around 0.6 pmol/kg in the deeper water column. At the stations north of the Polar Front (PF), Nd concentrations increase linearly from about 10 pmol/kg at depths of ~ 200 m to up to 31 pmol/kg close to the bottom indicating particle scavenging and release. Within the Weddell Gyre (WG), however, Nd concentrations are essentially constant at 25 pmol/kg at depths greater than ~ 1000 m. The distributions of both elements show a positive correlation with dissolved silicon implying a close linkage to diatom biogeochemistry. Hafnium essentially shows invariant isotope compositions with values averaging at epsilon-Hf = +4.6, whereas Nd isotopes mark distinct differences between water masses, such as modified North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW, epsilon-Nd = -11 to -10) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW, epsilon-Nd = -8.6 to -9.6), but also waters locally advected via the Agulhas Current can be identified by their unradiogenic Nd isotope compositions. Mixing calculations suggest that a small fraction of Nd is removed by particle scavenging during mixing of water masses north of the PF. Nevertheless, the Nd isotope composition has apparently not been significantly affected by uptake and release of Nd from particles, as indicated by mixing calculations. A mixing envelope of an approximated North Pacific and a North Atlantic end-member shows that Nd isotope and concentration patterns in the Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) can be fully explained by ~ 30:70 percentage contributions of these respective end-members.
