OBJECTIVES: In this study we tested the hypothesis that lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) might be able to be used as a biomarker for coronary artery disease (CAD). BACKGROUND: The mechanisms by which the innate immune recognition of pathogens could lead to atherosclerosis remain unclear. Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein is the first protein to encounter lipopolysaccharide and to deliver it to its cellular targets, toll-like receptors; therefore, its presence might be a reliable biomarker that indicates activation of innate immune responses. METHODS: A total of 247 men undergoing elective coronary angiography were studied, and the extent of coronary atherosclerosis was assessed by 2 established scores: "extent score" and "severity score." Levels of LBP, markers of inflammation, and traditional risk factors for CAD were assessed. RESULTS: Serum LBP concentration was significantly increased in 172 patients with angiographically confirmed CAD compared with 75 individuals without coronary atherosclerosis (20.6 +/- 8.7 pg/ml vs. 17.1 +/- 6.0 pg/ml, respectively; p = 0.002). Moreover in multivariable logistic regression analyses, adjusted for established cardiovascular risk factors and markers of systemic inflammation, LBP was a significant and independent predictor of prevalent CAD (p < 0.05 in all models). CONCLUSIONS: Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein might serve as a novel marker for CAD in men. The present results underlie the potential importance of innate immune mechanisms for CAD. Further studies are warranted to bolster the data and to identify pathogenetic links between innate immune system activation and atherosclerosis.

With energy demands and costs growing every day, the need for improving energy efficiency in electrical devices has become very important. Research into various methods of improving efficiency for all electrical components will be a key to meet future energy needs. This report documents the design, construction, and testing of a research quality electric machine dynamometer and test bed. This test cell system can be used for research in several areas including: electric drives systems, electric vehicle propulsion systems, power electronic converters, load/source element in an AC Microgrid, as well as many others. The test cell design criteria, and decisions, will be discussed in reference to user functionality and flexibility. The individual power components will be discussed in detail to how they relate to the project, highlighting any feature used in operation of the test cell. A project timeline will be discussed, clearly stating the work done by the different individuals involved in the project. In addition, the system will be parameterized and benchmark data will be used to provide the functional operation of the system. BACKGROUND: Increasing age and comorbidities among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) stimulates the exhaustive research for alternative grafts. No-React treatment should render the tissue resistant against degeneration and reduce early inflammatory response. The aim of the present study was an invasive assessment of the patency of No-React bovine internal mammary artery (NRIMA grafts) used as bypass conduit in CABG surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen NRIMA grafts were used in 17 patients (2.9%) out of a total of 572 patients undergoing CABG surgery within a 12-month period. All intraoperative data were assessed and in-hospital outcome was analysed. Follow-up examination was performed 7.0+/-4.0 months after initial surgery, including clinical status and coronary angiography to assess patency of the NRIMA grafts. RESULTS: Average perioperative flow of all NRIMA grafts was 71+/-60 ml/min. One patient died in hospital due to a multi-organ failure. Four patients refused invasive assessment. Follow-up was complete in 12 patients with overall 13 NRIMA grafts. Nine NRIMA grafts (69.2%) were used for the right coronary system, two NRIMA grafts (15.4%) on the LAD and two on the circumflex artery. Graft patency was 23.1% and was independent of the intraoperative flow measurement. CONCLUSIONS: NRIMA grafts show a very low patency and cannot be recommended as coronary bypass graft conduits. Patency was independent of the perioperative flow, assessed by Doppler ultrasound. Because of this unsatisfying observation, this type of graft should be utilised as a last resource conduit and used only to revascularise less important target vessels, such as the end branches of the right coronary artery.

This study evaluated the effects of 8 weeks of eccentric endurance training (EET) in male subjects (age range 42-66 years) with coronary artery disease (CAD). EET was compared to concentric endurance training (CET) carried out at the same metabolic exercise intensity, three times per week for half an hour. CET ( n=6) was done on a conventional cycle ergometer and EET ( n=6) on a custom-built motor-driven ergometer. During the first 5 weeks of the training program the metabolic load was progressively increased to 60% of peak oxygen uptake in both groups. At this metabolic load, mechanical work rate achieved was 97 (8) W [mean (SE)] for CET and 338 (34) W for EET, respectively. Leg muscle mass was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, quadriceps strength with an isokinetic dynamometer and muscle fibre composition of the vastus lateralis muscle with morphometry. The leg muscle mass increased significantly in both groups by some 3%. Strength parameters of knee extensors improved in EET only. Significant changes of +11 (4.9)%, +15 (3.2)% and +9 (2.5)% were reached for peak isometric torque and peak concentric torques at 60 degrees s(-1) and 120 degrees s(-1), respectively. Fibre size increased significantly by 19% in CET only. In conclusion, the present investigation showed that EET is feasible in middle-aged CAD patients and has functional advantages over CET by increasing muscle strength. Muscle mass increased similarly in both groups whereas muscle structural composition was differently affected by the respective training protocols. Potential limitations of this study are the cautiously chosen conditioning protocol and the restricted number of subjects.

Today, Digital Systems and Services for Technology Supported Learning and Education are recognized as the key drivers to transform the way that individuals, groups and organizations “learn” and the way to “assess learning” in 21st Century. These transformations influence: Objectives - moving from acquiring new “knowledge” to developing new and relevant “competences”; Methods – moving from “classroom” based teaching to “context-aware” personalized learning; and Assessment – moving from “life-long” degrees and certifications to “on-demand” and “in-context” accreditation of qualifications. Within this context, promoting Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning, is currently a key issue in the public discourse and the global dialogue on Education, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Flipped School Classrooms. This volume on Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning contributes to the international dialogue between researchers, technologists, practitioners and policy makers in Technology Supported Education and Learning. It addresses emerging issues related with both theory and practice, as well as, methods and technologies that can support Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning. In the twenty chapters contributed by international experts who are actively shaping the future of Educational Technology around the world, topics such as: - The evolution of University Open Courses in Transforming Learning - Supporting Open Access to Teaching and Learning of People with Disabilities - Assessing Student Learning in Online Courses - Digital Game-based Learning for School Education - Open Access to Virtual and Remote Labs for STEM Education - Teachers’ and Schools’ ICT Competence Profiling - Web-Based Education and Innovative Leadership in a K-12 International School Setting are presented. An in-depth blueprint of the promise, potential, and imminent future of the field, Digital Systems for Open Access to Formal and Informal Learning is necessary reading for researchers and practitioners, as well as, undergraduate and postgraduate students, in educational technology.

In his most recent publication, Against the Tide: Critics of Digitalisation, Otto Peters brings together some of the most formidable and critical voices and compelling perspectives on the potential hazards of digitalization. The viewpoints presented range from personal, anthropological, and pedagogical to more scientific and technical, and arise from multiple disciplines. Peters has long been a respected scholar in the field of distance education, and while Peters’ earlier work has advocated the affordances of digitalization, this latest book is an abrupt shift to the darker side of digitalization. The assembly of critics Peters has gathered come from around the world and different walks of life: journalists, educators, scientists, philosophers, lawyers, mathematicians, and computer scientists, to name a few. Their one shared bond is a deep-seated belief that digitalization will have a profound and lasting impact on humankind – and not only in positive ways. ...

Objective: To evaluate a new triaxial accelerometer device for prediction of energy expenditure, measured as VO2/kg, in obese adults and normal-weight controls during activities of daily life. Subjects and methods: Thirty-seven obese adults (Body Mass Index (BMI) 37±5.4) and seventeen controls (BMI 23±1.8) performed eight activities for 5 to 8 minutes while wearing a triaxial accelerometer on the right thigh. Simultaneously, VO2 and VCO2 were measured using a portable metabolic system. The relationship between accelerometer counts (AC) and VO2/kg was analysed using spline regression and linear mixed-effects models. Results: For all activities, VO2/kg was significantly lower in obese participants than in normalweight controls. A linear relationship between AC and VO2/kg existed only within accelerometer values from 0 to 300 counts/min, with an increase of 3.7 (95%-confidence interval (CI) 3.4 - 4.1) and 3.9 ml/min (95%-CI 3.4 - 4.3) per increase of 100 counts/min in obese and normal-weight adults, respectively. Linear modelling of the whole range yields wide prediction intervals for VO2/kg of ± 6.3 and ±7.3 ml/min in both groups. Conclusion: In obese and normal-weight adults, the use of AC for predicting energy expenditure, defined as VO2/kg, from a broad range of physical activities, characterized by varying intensities and types of muscle work, is limited.
