The model of Reshaping and Re-amplification (2R) regenerator based on High Nonlinear Dispersion Imbalanced Loop Mirror (HN-DILM) has been designed to examine its capability to reduce the necessary of fiber loop length and input peak power by deploying High Non linear Fiber (HNLF) compared to Dispersion Shifted Fiber (DSF). The simulation results show by deployed a HNLF as a nonlinear element in Dispersion Imbalanced Loop Mirror (DILM) requires only 400mW peak powers to obtain a peak of transmission compared to DSF which requires a higher peak power at 2000mW to obtain a certain transmissivity. It also shows that HNLF required shorter fiber length to achieve the highest transmission. The 2R regenerator also increases the extinction ratio (ER) of the entire system. © 2010 IEEE.

This dissertation consists of two independent musical compositions and an article detailing the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with particular emphasis on the carefully curated suite of embedded effects.

The first piece, 'Phase Locked Loop and Modulo Games' is scored for electric guitar and a single echo of equal volume less than a beat away. One could think of the piece as a 15 minute canon at the unison at the dotted eighth note (or at times the quarter or triplet-quarter), however the compositional motivation is more about weaving a composite texture between the guitar and its echo that is, while in theory extremely contrapuntal, in actuality is simply a single [superhuman] melodic line.

The second piece, 'The Dogma Loops' picks up a few compositional threads left by ‘Phase Locked Loop’ and weaves them into an entirely new tapestry. 'Phase Locked Loop' is motivated by the creation of a complex musical composite that is for the most part electronically transparent. 'The Dogma Loops' questions that same notion of composite electronic complexity by essentially asking a question: "what are the inputs to an interactive electronic system that create the most complex outputs via the simplest musical means possible?"

'The Dogma Loops' is scored for Electric Guitar (doubling on Ukulele), Violin and Violoncello. All of the principal instruments require an electronic pickup (except the Uke). The work is in three sections played attacca; [Automation Games], [Point of Origin] and [Cloning Vectors].

The third and final component of the document is the article 'Finding Ibrida.' This article details the process of the design and assembly of an electric guitar with integrated effects, while also providing the deeper context (conceptual and technical) which motivated the efforts and informed the challenges to hybridize the various technologies (tubes, transistors, digital effects and a microcontroller subsystem). The project was motivated by a desire for rigorous technical and hands-on engagement with analog signal processing as applied to the electric guitar. ‘Finding Ibrida’ explores sound, some myths and lore of guitar tech and the history of electric guitar distortion and its culture of sonic exploration.

Field-programmable gate arrays are ideal hosts to custom accelerators for signal, image, and data processing but de- mand manual register transfer level design if high performance and low cost are desired. High-level synthesis reduces this design burden but requires manual design of complex on-chip and off-chip memory architectures, a major limitation in applications such as video processing. This paper presents an approach to resolve this shortcoming. A constructive process is described that can derive such accelerators, including on- and off-chip memory storage from a C description such that a user-defined throughput constraint is met. By employing a novel statement-oriented approach, dataflow intermediate models are derived and used to support simple ap- proaches for on-/off-chip buffer partitioning, derivation of custom on-chip memory hierarchies and architecture transformation to ensure user-defined throughput constraints are met with minimum cost. When applied to accelerators for full search motion estima- tion, matrix multiplication, Sobel edge detection, and fast Fourier transform, it is shown how real-time performance up to an order of magnitude in advance of existing commercial HLS tools is enabled whilst including all requisite memory infrastructure. Further, op- timizations are presented that reduce the on-chip buffer capacity and physical resource cost by up to 96% and 75%, respectively, whilst maintaining real-time performance.

In this paper we advocate the Loop-of-stencil-reduce pattern as a way to simplify the parallel programming of heterogeneous platforms (multicore+GPUs). Loop-of-Stencil-reduce is general enough to subsume map, reduce, map-reduce, stencil, stencil-reduce, and, crucially, their usage in a loop. It transparently targets (by using OpenCL) combinations of CPU cores and GPUs, and it makes it possible to simplify the deployment of a single stencil computation kernel on different GPUs. The paper discusses the implementation of Loop-of-stencil-reduce within the FastFlow parallel framework, considering a simple iterative data-parallel application as running example (Game of Life) and a highly effective parallel filter for visual data restoration to assess performance. Thanks to the high-level design of the Loop-of-stencil-reduce, it was possible to run the filter seamlessly on a multicore machine, on multi-GPUs, and on both.

The internal combustion (IC) engines exploits only about 30% of the chemical energy ejected through combustion, whereas the remaining part is rejected by means of cooling system and exhausted gas. Nowadays, a major global concern is finding sustainable solutions for better fuel economy which in turn results in a decrease of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) is one of the most promising techniques to increase the overall efficiency of a vehicle system, allowing the recovery of the heat rejected by the exhaust and cooling systems. In this context, Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) are widely recognized as a potential technology to exploit the heat rejected by engines to produce electricity. The aim of the present paper is to investigate a WHR system, designed to collect both coolant and exhausted gas heats, coupled with an ORC cycle for vehicle applications. In particular, a coolant heat exchanger (CLT) allows the heat exchange between the water coolant and the ORC working fluid, whereas the exhausted gas heat is recovered by using a secondary circuit with diathermic oil. By using an in-house numerical model, a wide range of working conditions and ORC design parameters are investigated. In particular, the analyses are focused on the regenerator location inside the ORC circuits. Five organic fluids, working in both subcritical and supercritical conditions, have been selected in order to detect the most suitable configuration in terms of energy and exergy efficiencies.

The annotation of Business Dynamics models with parameters and equations, to simulate the system under study and further evaluate its simulation output, typically involves a lot of manual work. In this paper we present an approach for automated equation formulation of a given Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) and a set of associated time series with the help of neural network evolution (NEvo). NEvo enables the automated retrieval of surrogate equations for each quantity in the given CLD, hence it produces a fully annotated CLD that can be used for later simulations to predict future KPI development. In the end of the paper, we provide a detailed evaluation of NEvo on a business use-case to demonstrate its single step prediction capabilities.

The aim of this study was to develop a multiplex loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method capable of detecting Escherichia coli generally and verocytotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) specifically in beef and bovine faeces. The LAMP assay developed was highly specific (100%) and able to distinguish between E. coli and VTEC based on the amplification of the phoA, and stx1 and/or stx2 genes, respectively. In the absence of an enrichment step, the limit of detection 50% (LOD50) of the LAMP assay was determined to be 2.83, 3.17 and 2.83-3.17 log CFU/g for E. coli with phoA, stx1 and stx2 genes, respectively, when artificially inoculated minced beef and bovine faeces were tested. The LAMP calibration curves generated with pure cultures, and spiked beef and faeces, suggested that the assay had good quantification capability. Validation of the assay, performed using retail beef and bovine faeces samples, demonstrated good correlation between counts obtained by the LAMP assay and by a conventional culture method, but suggested the possibility of false negative LAMP results for 12.5-14.7% of samples tested. The multiplex LAMP assay developed potentially represents a rapid alternative to culture for monitoring E.coli levels in beef or faeces and it would provide additional information on the presence of VTEC. However, some further optimisation is needed to improve detection sensitivity.

Modified ferrites with a generic formula of MFe2O4 (where M=Co, Cu, Mn and their combination: Cu/Co, Cu/Mn and Co/Mn) were studied as potentially attractive ionic oxygen and electron carrier materials for the production of “clean H2” via the Chemical Loop Reforming (CLR) of bio-ethanol. The conventional CLR process consists of 2 steps: 1st - the reduction step with ethanol; 2nd - the re-oxidation step with water. The synthesized materials were tested in a laboratory plant in terms of both redox properties and catalytic activity to generate hydrogen during the re-oxidation step with water steam over previously pre-reduced samples. The obtained results showed that CuFe2O4, Cu0.5Co0.5Fe2O4, Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 and CoFe2O4 within 20 min of ethanol reduction reached almost a complete reduction, and, as a consequence, the higher yields to H2 produced during the re-oxidation step with steam. On the other hand, incorporation of Mn-cations greatly affects the redox properties of a resulted spinel (MnFe2O4 and Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4) leading to its lower reducibility, caused by the formation of a hardly reducible layer of MnxFeyO oxide. Moreover, the presence of Mn-cations effectively reduces the amount of coke formed during the anaerobic reduction step with ethanol and hence avoids a fast deactivation of the material. Modification of the conventional CLR process with an addition of the 3rd regeneration step (carried out with air) was done in order to increase the stability of the looping material and to overcome the deactivation problems, such as: a coke deposition/accumulation and an incomplete re-oxidation of M0 during the 2nd step.
