The presence of DNA in a criminal investigation often requires scrutiny in relation to how it came to be where it was found. There is a paucity of data with respect to the extent to which one can assume that the last person handling an object, which has previously been touched by others, will contribute to the DNA profile generated from it. There are limited data in detailing the extent to which any foreign DNA is picked-up from a previously touched object and transferred to subsequently touched objects. This study focuses on DNA transfer and persistence on a knife handle after multiple handlings with the knife by different individuals soon after each other, as well as handprints left on flat DNA-free surfaces immediately after touching a knife handle with a known history of prior handling. The profiles of later handlers of a knife are more prominent than earlier handlers; however, the last handler is not always the major contributor to the profile. Proportional contributions to the profiles retrieved from knife handles vary depending on the individuals touching the knife handle. They can also vary when knife handles have been handled in the same manner by the same individuals in the same sequence on different occasions. Hands readily pickup DNA left on objects by others and transfer it to subsequently touched objects. The quantity of foreign DNA picked up by a hand and deposited on subsequently touched objects diminishes as more DNA-free objects are handled soon after each other. Caution is advised when considering how DNA from different individuals may have been transferred to the object from which it was collected.

Politicians, newspaper reporters and parents alike seem to need to classify young people’s work as either screen-based or social; as either virtual or ‘real’; as either digital or print. This provocation uses classroom video footage to demonstrate the imbrication of digital- and print-based literacies that is supported when expert literacy teachers use mobile touch screen devices with their students. The aim is to expose the nonsense of dichotomous thinking in relation to teaching and curriculum practices.Provocation: The notional distinction between digital- and print-based is easily troubled when we look at practice, but clearly this distinction serves some agendas well, particularly in terms of the ‘fit’ with, and reproduction of, established practices for managing resources and knowledge. If this distinction is largely a fiction, what might the public relations ‘spin’ be that would speak productively to stakeholders in literacy education?

Interactions in mobile devices normally happen in an explicit manner, which means that they are initiated by the users. Yet, users are typically unaware that they also interact implicitly with their devices. For instance, our hand pose changes naturally when we type text messages. Whilst the touchscreen captures finger touches, hand movements during this interaction however are unused. If this implicit hand movement is observed, it can be used as additional information to support or to enhance the users’ text entry experience. This thesis investigates how implicit sensing can be used to improve existing, standard interaction technique qualities. In particular, this thesis looks into enhancing front-of-device interaction through back-of-device and hand movement implicit sensing. We propose the investigation through machine learning techniques. We look into problems on how sensor data via implicit sensing can be used to predict a certain aspect of an interaction. For instance, one of the questions that this thesis attempts to answer is whether hand movement during a touch targeting task correlates with the touch position. This is a complex relationship to understand but can be best explained through machine learning. Using machine learning as a tool, such correlation can be measured, quantified, understood and used to make predictions on future touch position. Furthermore, this thesis also evaluates the predictive power of the sensor data. We show this through a number of studies. In Chapter 5 we show that probabilistic modelling of sensor inputs and recorded touch locations can be used to predict the general area of future touches on touchscreen. In Chapter 7, using SVM classifiers, we show that data from implicit sensing from general mobile interactions is user-specific. This can be used to identify users implicitly. In Chapter 6, we also show that touch interaction errors can be detected from sensor data. In our experiment, we show that there are sufficient distinguishable patterns between normal interaction signals and signals that are strongly correlated with interaction error. In all studies, we show that performance gain can be achieved by combining sensor inputs.

The sustainability of buildings associated to the use of raw earth has motivated the studies and the development of techniques and methods in the context of this type of construction. In the region of Huambo, Angola, these construction techniques are widely used, especially for low-income families who represent the majority of the population. Much of the buildings in Huambo province are built with adobe. Due to the climate in this region, subtropical, hot and humid, with altitudes above 1000 meters and extensive river system, these buildings are particularly vulnerable to the action of water and develop, in many situations, early degradation. The Huambo Province is located in central Angola, has 36 km2 area and approximately 2 million inhabitants. This work aims to evaluate, by conducting in-situ tests, physical and mechanical properties of adobe blocks typically used in the construction of those buildings. The methodology is based on field campaigns where in-situ expeditious tests were performed in soils (smell test, color, touch, brightness, sedimentation, ball, hardness, etc.) and tests on adobes blocks made with traditional procedures, particularly in terms of durability and erodibility (erosion test at Geelong method; evaluation test of wet / dry cycle, applying the New Zealand standards 4297: 1998; 4297: 1998 and 4297: 1999). The results will contribute to the characterization of the geomaterials and methods used in construction with earth in Huambo Province, contributing to the improvement of these sustainable solutions, with a strong presence in this region. The results of this study will also contribute to the proposal of constructive solutions with improved performance characteristics, comfort, safety and durability.

Abstract: The object of psychomotricity is the study of the body and its relationships with the outside world. Within a certain environmental context, the body is one of the central vehicles in the transmission of messages. The psychomotricity therapist's knowledge about the use and identification of non-verbal aspects is the key to improve the efficiency of the intervention, especially when we face psychomotricity with emphasis on the quality of the relationship . The aim of this work is to reckon the non-verbal happening of touch and its typology, according to Watson(1975), operated by the psychomotricist on the arms of a child with cerebral palsy,(right hemiparesis) during his/her intervention. This analysis consists of a case study based on the systematic and systematized viewing of a video made during one session, in which the therapist interacts with the child for therapeutic purposes. The collection of data was made through vídeo recording and verbally set down transcrptions for later analysis and categorization. The results obtained let us conclude that the psychomotricity therapist used all the non-verbal aspects related to arm touching . Most of these touches were of the instrumental/affective kind. Data have emerged that were considered relevant as contributing to improve the quality of the intervention if they are known and aproppriately used by the psychomotricity therapist.
