Ni(II)complexes(1-5)ofdi2pyridylketoneN(4)-phenylthiosemicarbazone (HL) have been synthesized and spectrochemically characterized. Elemental analyses revealed a NiL2 center dot 2H(2)O stoichiometry for compound 1. However, the single crystals isolated revealed a composition NiL, - 0.5(H,0)0.5(DMF). The compound crystallizes into a monoclinic lattice with the space group P-21/n. Complexes 2. 3 and 4 are observed to show a 1:1:1 ratio of metal: thioseicarbazone:gegenion, with the general formula NiLX center dot yH(2)O [X = NCS. Y = 2 for 2; X = Cl, Y = 3 for 3 and X = N-3, y = 4.5 for 4]. Compound 5 is a dimer with a metal:thiosemicarbazone:gegenion ratio of 2:2: 1. with the formula [Ni,L,(SO4)1 - 4H(2)O (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a simplified yet analytical formulation of the carrier backscattering coefficient for zig-zag semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes under diffusive regime. The electron-phonon scattering rate for longitudinal acoustic, optical, and zone-boundary phonon emissions for both inter- and intrasubband transition rates have been derived using Kane's nonparabolic energy subband model. The expressions for the mean free path and diffusive resistance have been formulated incorporating the aforementioned phonon scattering. Appropriate overlap function in Fermi's golden rule has been incorporated for a more general approach. The effect of energy subbands on low and high bias zones for the onset of longitudinal acoustic, optical, and zone-boundary phonon emissions and absorption have been analytically addressed. 90% transmission of the carriers from the source to the drain at 400 K for a 5 mu m long nanotube at 105 V m(-1) has been exhibited. The analytical results are in good agreement with the available experimental data. (c) 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Raman spectra of single crystals of (NH4)2M(SO4)2·6 H2O where M=Mg, Zn Ni or Co have been recorded using λ 2537 excitation. Interesting results concerning the substitution of the divalent atoms in the double sulphate lattice on the sulphate and ammonium frequencies are observed. The spectra of these double sulphates are discussed in the light of the known crystal structure details and in relation, to the spectra of the corresponding potassium double sulphates, reported recently by the author. The Raman spectrum of NaNH4SO4·2 H2O has also been recorded for the first time and the results obtained are also included.

Polarisation characters of the Raman lines of calcium fluoride (fluorspar) and potassium aluminium sulphate (alum) were investigated under the following conditions. Unpolarised light was incident normally on a face of the crystal making an angle 22.5° with a cubic face and the light scattered transversely along a cubic axis was analysed by a double image prism kept with its principal axes inclined at 45° to the vertical. Under these conditions the depolarisation factors of the Raman lines belonging to the totally symmetric (A), the doubly degenerate (E) and the triply degenerate (F) modes should be respectively =1, >1 and <1. The characteristic Raman line of CaF2 at 322 cm-1 exhibited a depolarisation value less than 1, showing thereby that the corresponding mode is a triply degenerate one (F). The Raman lines observed in the spectrum of K-alum were also classified and the results were compared with those given by previous investigators using standard crystal orientations.

A mechanism for the isomerisation of ethyl 1-ethoxycarbonyl-2-oxocyclopentylacetate (I) into a cyclohexane β-keto-ester as proceeding through an intermediate bicyclic /gb-diketone (VII) has been considered as an alternative mechanism to one earlier suggested.1 The determination of the structure of the isomerised β-keto-ester as 2, 3-diethoxycarbonylcyclohexanone (V) has provided support for the earlier mechanism.

Dry sliding wear behavior of die-cast ADC12 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with short alumina fibers were investigated by using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The Al2O3 fibers were 4 mu m in diameter and were present in volume fractions (T-f)ranging from 0.03 to 0.26, The length of the fiber varied from 40 to 200 mu m. Disks of aluminum-alumina composites were rubbed against a pin of nitrided stainless steel SUS440B with a load of 10 N at a sliding velocity of 0.1 m/s. The unreinforced ADC 12 aluminum alloy and their composites containing low volume fractions of alumina (V-f approximate to 0.05) showed a sliding-distance-dependent transition from severe to mild wear. However, composites containing high volume fractions of alumina ( V-f > 0.05) exhibited only mild wear for all sliding distances. The duration of occurrence of the severe wear regime and the wear rate both decrease with increasing volume fraction. In MMCs the wear rate in the mild wear regime decreases with increase in volume fraction: reaching a minimum value at V-f = 0.09 Beyond V-f = 0.09 the wear rate increasesmarginally. On the other hand, the wear rate of the counterface (steel pin) was found to increase moderately with increase in V-f. From the analysis of wear data and detailed examination of (a) worn surfaces, (b) their cross-sections and (c) wear debris, two modes of wear mechanisms have been identified to be operative, in these materials and these are: (i) adhesive wear in the case of unreinforced matrix material and in MMCs with low Vf and (ii) abrasive wear in the case of MMCs with high V-f. In order to understand the mechanism of decarboxylation by 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid decarboxylase, chemical modification studies were carried out. Specific modification of the amino acid residues with diethylpyrocarbonate, N-bromosuccinimide and N-ethylmaleiimide revealed that at least one residue each of histidine, tryptophan and cysteine were essential for the activity. Various substrate analogs which were potential inhibitors significantly protected the enzyme against inactivation. The modification of residues at low concentration of the reagents and the protection experiments suggested that these amino acid residues might be present at the active site. Studies also suggested that the carboxyl and ortho-hydroxyl groups of the substrate are essential for interaction with the enzyme.

The growth of strongly oriented or epitaxial thin films of metal oxides generally requires relatively high growth temperatures or infusion of energy to the growth surface through means such as ion bombardment. We have grown high quality epitaxial thin films of Co3O4 on different substrates at a temperature as low as 400 degreesC by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) using cobalt(II) acetylacetonate as the precursor. With oxygen as the reactant gas, polycrystalline Co3O4 films are formed on glass and Si (100) in the temperature range 400-550 degreesC. Under similar conditions of growth. highly oriented films of Co3O4 are formed on SrTiO3 (100) and LaAlO3 (100). The activation energy for the growth of polycrystalline films on glass is significantly higher than that for epitaxial growth on SrTiO3 (100). The film on LaAlO3 (100) grown at 450 degreesC shows a rocking curve FWHM of 1.61 degrees, which reduces to 1.32 degrees when it is annealed in oxygen at 725 degreesC. The film on SrTiO3 (100) has a FWHM of 0.33 degrees (as deposited) and 0.29 (after annealing at 725 degreesC). The phi -scan analysis shows cube-on-cube epitaxy on both these substrates. The quality of epitaxy on SrTiO3 (100) is comparable to the best of the perovskite-based oxide thin films grown at significantly higher temperatures. A plausible mechanism is proposed for the observed low temperature epitaxy. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The phase equilibrium studies of organic system, involving resorcinol (R) and p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB), reveal the formation of a 1:1 molecular complex with two eutectics. The heat of mixing, entropy of fusion, roughness parameter, interfacial energy, and the excess thermodynamic functions were calculated based on enthalpy of fusion data determined via differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) method. X-ray powder diffraction studies confirm that the eutectics are not simple mechanical mixture of the components under investigation. The spectroscopic investigations (IR and NMR) suggest the occurrence of hydrogen bonding between the components forming the molecular complex. The dielectric measurements, carried out on hot-pressed addition compound (molecular complex), show higher dielectric constant at 320 K than that of individual components. The microstructural investigations of eutectic and addition compound indicate dendritic and faceted morphological features. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The change in the specific heat by the application of magnetic field up to 161 for high temperature superconductor system for DyBa2Cu3O7-x by Revaz et al. [23] is examined through the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau(G-L) theory of anisotropic Type-II superconductors. The observed specific heat anomaly near T-c with magnetic field is explained qualitatively through the expression <Delta C > = (B-a/T-c) t/(1 - t)(alpha Theta(gamma)lambda(2)(m)(0)), which is the anisotropic formulation of the G-L theory in the London limit developed by Kogan and coworkers; relating to the change in specific heat Delta C for the variation of applied magnetic field for different orientations with c-axis. The analysis of this equation explains satisfactorily the specific heat anomaly near T-c and determines the anisotropic ratio gamma as 5.608, which is close to the experimental value 5.3 +/- 0.5given in the paper of Revaz et al. for this system. Current versus voltage characteristics (I-V) of nanocrystalline SnO2 materials have been investigated in air at room temperature. The samples were prepared by the inert gas condensation technique (IGCT) as well as by chemical methods. X-ray diffraction studies showed a tetragonal rutile structure for all the samples. Microstructural studies were performed with transmission electron microscopy. All the samples exhibited nonlinear I-V characteristics of the current-controlled negative resistance (CCNR) type. The results show that the threshold field (break down) voltage is higher for the samples prepared by the IGCT method than for those prepared by the chemical method due to the formation of a tin oxide layer over the crystalline tin. It is also found that the threshold field increases with the decrease in grain size.

The synthesis of manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes of a new ligand 2-thiophene-2-yl-3(thiophene-2-carboxylidene-amino)-1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (TTCADQ) is described. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, spectral (u.v.-vis., i.r., 1D n.m.r., 2D hetcor and e.p.r.) and thermal studies. The formation of 1,2-dihydroquinazolin-4(3H)-one rather than hydrazone, in the reaction of aromatic aldehyde and o-aminobenzoylhydrazide is proved by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 2D hetcor n.m.r. studies. On the basis of elemental analysis, u.v.-vis.spectroscopy and magnetic moment studies, six coordinate geometry for all the complexes was proposed. The i.r. spectral studies reveal the bidentate behaviour of the ligand.

: Varistors prepared from ZnO with CaMnO3 perovskite as the only forming additive, exhibit voltage-limiting current-voltage characteristics with nonlinearity coefficient alpha up to 380 at low voltages of 1.8-12 V/mm. High nonlinearity is observed only with a suitable combination of processing parameters. The most crucial of them are (i) initial formulation of ceramics and (ii) the sintering temperature and conditions of post-sinter annealing. An electrically active intergranular phase is formed between ZnO grains with the composition ranging from Ca4Mn6Zn4O17 to Ca4Mn8Zn3O19, which creates the n-p-n heterojunctions. The low-voltage nonlinearity originates as a result of higher concentration of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) present at the grain boundary layer regions, being charge compensated by zinc vacancies. Under the external electric field, the barrier height is lowered due to the uphill diffusion of holes mediated by the acceptor states. Above the turn-on voltages, the unhindered transport of charge carriers between grains generates high current density associated with large nonlinearity.

Our concern here is to rationalize experimental observations of failure modes brought about by indentation of hard thin ceramic films deposited on metallic substrates. By undertaking this exercise, we would like to evolve an analytical framework that can be used for designs of coatings. In Part I of the paper we develop an algorithm and test it for a model system. Using this analytical framework we address the issue of failure of columnar TiN films in Part II [J. Mater. Res. 21, 783 (2006)] of the paper. In this part, we used a previously derived Hankel transform procedure to derive stress and strain in a birefringent polymer film glued to a strong substrate and subjected to spherical indentation. We measure surface radial strains using strain gauges and bulk film stresses using photo elastic technique (stress freezing). For a boundary condition based on Hertzian traction with no film interface constraint and assuming the substrate constraint to be a function of the imposed strain, the theory describes the stress distributions well. The variation in peak stresses also demonstrates the usefulness of depositing even a soft film to protect an underlying substrate.
