Blurred pictures from the crime scene: the growing case for a function of Chlamydiales in plastid endosymbiosis.

A number of recent papers have brought suggestive evidence for an active role of Chlamydiales in the establishment of the plastid. Chlamydiales define a very ancient group of obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens that multiply in vesicles within eukaryotic phagotrophic host cells such as animals, amoebae or other protists, possibly including the hypothetical phagotroph that internalized the cyanobacterial ancestor of the plastid over a billion years ago. We briefly survey the case for an active role of these ancient pathogens in plastid endosymbiosis. We argue that a good understanding of the Chlamydiales infection cycle and diversity may help to shed light on the process of metabolic integration of the evolving plastid.

The transatlantic business community faced with US direct investment in Western Europe, 1958-1968

This article examines the position of US and European business in the debate about American direct investment in Western Europe in a historical perspective, from the establishment of the Common Market to the introduction of US regulation of foreign direct investment (FDI) a decade later. Based on abundant and diverse archival documents, it sheds new light on the process of Americanisation and contributes to existing research on transnational networks, by revealing the active role industrial leaders on both sides of the Atlantic played in shaping the political responses to problems raised by the American firms' massive presence in the Common Market.

Creating and organizing an "English class" in primary education: The role of teacher talk in the EFL amd CLIL Classes

Catalonia is a bilingual country where the presence of English in the social context is small; the amount of input received by the primary education pupils is very little and this input mainly comes from the English lessons at school. Consequently, this situation combined with the increasing demand for English and the fact that the new generations want to become communicatively competent in English place the role of English teachers in a relevant position. This research project analyses the role of the English teacher talk; in particular, the study focuses on the teacher’s oral productions in foreign language lessons (EFL) and in content-based lessons (CLIL).

Tuotannon kehitysinvestointiprojektien läpivientimalli

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia ja etsiä kehityskohteita kohdeyrityksen kehitysinvestointiprojektien toimintamallissa. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia nykyistä investointikäytäntöä ja luoda eri linjastoissa tehtäville kehitysinvestointiesityksille edellytykset tukea yhteisesti yrityksen tulevia suhdannenäkymiä ja strategiaa. Työn tavoitteena oli myös pyrkiä välillisesti kasvattamaan investointiin sijoitettavan pääoman tuottoprosenttia pienentämällä kustannuksia huolellisen valmistelun keinoin jo investointiprojektin kehityksen alkuvaiheessa. Työkaluksi tähän todettiin olevan läpivientimalli. Tutkimusmenetelminä käytettiin kvantitatiivisia ja kvalitatiivisia tiedonkeruumenenelmiä. Näistä ylemmän johdon ja keskijohdon haastattelut, sekä omat kokemukset yrityksen käytännöistä vuosilta 2004-2008 näyttelivät pääroolia. Työn tuotoksena laadittiin aiheeseen liittyvä ohjeistus ja läpivientimalli osaksi yrityksen laatujärjestelmää. Malli sijoitettiin template tyyppisesti dokumentinhallinnointiohjelmistoon. Työn tuloksena on esitetty kehitysinvestointiprojektien läpivientimalli siten, että se tukee yrityksen strategiaa kestävän kehityksen ympäröimänä. Työlle asetetut tavoitteet saavutettiin sille tarkoitetussa aikavälissä.
