Les modèles animaux d’arthrose sont utilisés sur le rat depuis des décennies pour évaluer l’efficacité analgésique de nombreux composés. Cependant, la méthodologie utilisée, en particulier les protocoles d’évaluation de la douleur, est très différente d’une étude à une autre, rendant difficile la comparaison entre chaque projet. Afin d'améliorer le transfert des résultats précliniques vers la recherche clinique, ce projet propose d'établir un protocole d'évaluation de la douleur fiable et pertinent, et de le valider à l’aide du modèle d’arthrose expérimental le plus populaire, soit l’injection intra-articulaire de mono-iodoacétate de sodium (MIA). La répétabilité et la fiabilité inter-évaluateur de diverses méthodes d’évaluation de la douleur ont été évaluées, et le protocole d'acclimatation le plus fiable a été déterminé. Ensuite, les méthodes les plus intéressantes ont été testées pour leur sensibilité à détecter les altérations douloureuses induites par l’injection de MIA, ainsi que leur réponse au traitement analgésique, soit une injection intra-articulaire de lidocaïne. Une période d'acclimatation adéquate associée à un protocole d'évaluation combinant des mesures réflexes, des comportements spontanés ainsi que des tests opérants ont témoigné avec succès des changements douloureux liés à l'injection de MIA. Le test opérant fut la méthode la plus sensible pour détecter l'effet analgésique de la lidocaïne. Cette étude a permis d’établir le protocole d’acclimatation et les méthodes de l’évaluation de la douleur les plus fiables et sensibles. Aussi, il a démontré la pertinence du test opérant pour détecter la composante affective de la douleur chez les rongeurs.

Contexte : De manière générale, on considère que le processus de validation d’un instrument de mesure porte sur la validité et la fiabilité. Or, la nature dynamique et évolutive de certaines problématiques, comme la stigmatisation des personnes vivant avec le VIH (PVVIH), laisse croire qu’il est particulièrement important de réinvestir rapidement dans la pratique, les résultats produits par les mesures ainsi validées. Objectifs : La présente thèse vise à développer et valider une échelle de mesure des attitudes stigmatisantes envers les PVVIH en intégrant un dispositif participatif. La thèse utilise en partie les données d’une enquête de surveillance des attitudes envers les PVVIH au Québec, elle comporte trois études qui répondent aux trois objectifs spécifiques suivants : (1) valider la version révisée d’un instrument de mesure des attitudes favorables à la stigmatisation dans la population générale du Québec envers les PVVIH; (2) analyser la relation entre la mesure des attitudes favorables à la stigmatisation et le recours au dépistage du VIH dans la population générale du Québec; (3) décrire et analyser les processus de circulation et d’utilisation des connaissances produites par l’instrument de mesure dans les réseaux professionnels des membres d’un comité consultatif. Méthodes : Un comité consultatif réunissant plusieurs partenaires issus de différents milieux a été constitué dès l’obtention de la subvention. Il a été consulté et informé avant, pendant et après l’enquête téléphonique populationnelle (n=1500) ayant permis de colliger les données. L’Échelle des Attitudes Stigmatisantes envers les Personnes Vivant avec le VIH (EASE-PVVIH) a été validée au moyen de plusieurs analyses psychométriques : analyses factorielles exploratoires et confirmatives, corrélations, régression linéaire multiple, test-t, tests d’hypothèses d’invariance de la structure factorielle et alphas de Cronbach (objectif 1). L’association entre les attitudes favorables à la stigmatisation et le recours au dépistage du VIH a été testée à l’aide de régressions logistiques hiérarchiques (objectif 2). Quant aux processus de circulation et d’utilisation des connaissances dans les réseaux professionnels, ils ont été analysés au moyen d’une étude de cas rétrospective (objectif 3). Résultats : Les analyses ont révélé trois résultats importants. Premièrement, d’un point de vue psychométrique, l’EASE-PVVIH est un outil fiable et valide pour mesurer les attitudes stigmatisantes envers les personnes vivant avec le VIH. Deuxièmement, sous une certaine forme caractérisée par l’inquiétude éprouvée lors de rencontres occasionnelles, les attitudes stigmatisantes par rapport aux personnes vivant avec le VIH semblent nuire au recours au test de dépistage dans la population générale au Québec. Troisièmement, un dispositif participatif en particulier, soit un comité consultatif, semble être un moyen pour favoriser le réinvestissement rapide et étendre la portée des résultats produits par la recherche dans des actions concrètes de santé publique. Conclusion : Ces résultats mettent en lumière la portée d’un dispositif participatif pour la validation d’instrument de mesure. L’arrimage entre les préoccupations scientifiques et pratiques apparaît être une avenue prometteuse pour améliorer la qualité et la pertinence sociale des données produites par les mesures.

Objective To determine overall, test–retest and inter-rater reliability of posture indices among persons with idiopathic scoliosis. Design A reliability study using two raters and two test sessions. Setting Tertiary care paediatric centre. Participants Seventy participants aged between 10 and 20 years with different types of idiopathic scoliosis (Cobb angle 15 to 60°) were recruited from the scoliosis clinic. Main outcome measures Based on the XY co-ordinates of natural reference points (e.g. eyes) as well as markers placed on several anatomical landmarks, 32 angular and linear posture indices taken from digital photographs in the standing position were calculated from a specially developed software program. Generalisability theory served to estimate the reliability and standard error of measurement (SEM) for the overall, test–retest and inter-rater designs. Bland and Altman's method was also used to document agreement between sessions and raters. Results In the random design, dependability coefficients demonstrated a moderate level of reliability for six posture indices (ϕ = 0.51 to 0.72) and a good level of reliability for 26 posture indices out of 32 (ϕ ≥ 0.79). Error attributable to marker placement was negligible for most indices. Limits of agreement and SEM values were larger for shoulder protraction, trunk list, Q angle, cervical lordosis and scoliosis angles. The most reproducible indices were waist angles and knee valgus and varus. Conclusions Posture can be assessed in a global fashion from photographs in persons with idiopathic scoliosis. Despite the good reliability of marker placement, other studies are needed to minimise measurement errors in order to provide a suitable tool for monitoring change in posture over time.

In this thesis T-policy is implemented to the inventory system with random lead time and also repair in the reliability of k-out-of-n system. Inventory system may be considered as the system of keeping records of the amounts of commodities in stock. Reliability is defined as the ability of an entity to perform a required function under given conditions for a given time interval. It is measured by the probability that an entity E can perform a required function under given conditions for the time interval. In this thesis considered k-out-of-n system with repair and two modes of service under T-policy. In this case first server is available always and second server is activated on elapse of T time units. The lead time is exponentially distributed with parameter and T is exponentially distributed with parameter from the epoch at which it was inactivated after completion of repair of all failed units in the previous cycle, or the moment n-k failed units accumulate. The repaired units are assumed to be as good as new. In this study , three different situations, ie; cold system, warm system and hot system. A k-out-of-n system is called cold, warm or hot according as the functional units do not fail, fail at a lower rate or fail at the same rate when system is shown as that when it is up.

Application of Queueing theory in areas like Computer networking, ATM facilities, Telecommunications and to many other numerous situation made people study Queueing models extensively and it has become an ever expanding branch of applied probability. The thesis discusses Reliability of a ‘k-out-of-n system’ where the server also attends external customers when there are no failed components (main customers), under a retrial policy, which can be explained in detail. It explains the reliability of a ‘K-out-of-n-system’ where the server also attends external customers and studies a multi-server infinite capacity Queueing system where each customer arrives as ordinary but can generate into priority customer which waiting in the queue. The study gives details on a finite capacity multi-server queueing system with self-generation of priority customers and also on a single server infinite capacity retrial Queue where the customer in the orbit can generate into a priority customer and leaves the system if the server is already busy with a priority generated customer; else he is taken for service immediately. Arrival process is according to a MAP and service times follow MSP.

A novel optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) based on the Mach-Zelauler interferometer (MZI) and the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed for the first tittle to the authors ' knowledge. In the structure, the Mach-Zehnder interferometer acts as an optical switch. The principle of the OADM is analyzed in this paper. The OADM can add/drop one of the multi-input channels or pass the channel directly by adjusting the difference of the two arms of the interferometer. The channel isolation is more than 20 dB

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the use of non-invasive techniques to determine the integrity of a material, component, or structure. Engineers and scientists use NDT in a variety of applications, including medical imaging, materials analysis, and process control.Photothermal beam deflection technique is one of the most promising NDT technologies. Tremendous R&D effort has been made for improving the efficiency and simplicity of this technique. It is a popular technique because it can probe surfaces irrespective of the size of the sample and its surroundings. This technique has been used to characterize several semiconductor materials, because of its non-destructive and non-contact evaluation strategy. Its application further extends to analysis of wide variety of materials. Instrumentation of a NDT technique is very crucial for any material analysis. Chapter two explores the various excitation sources, source modulation techniques, detection and signal processing schemes currently practised. The features of the experimental arrangement including the steps for alignment, automation, data acquisition and data analysis are explained giving due importance to details.Theoretical studies form the backbone of photothermal techniques. The outcome of a theoretical work is the foundation of an application.The reliability of the theoretical model developed and used is proven from the studies done on crystalline.The technique is applied for analysis of transport properties such as thermal diffusivity, mobility, surface recombination velocity and minority carrier life time of the material and thermal imaging of solar cell absorber layer materials like CuInS2, CuInSe2 and SnS thin films.analysis of In2S3 thin films, which are used as buffer layer material in solar cells. In the present scenario of energy demand overtaking energy supply top priority is given for energy conservation programs and policies. Most of the process plants are operated on continuous basis and consumes large quantities of energy. Efficient management of process system can lead to energy savings, improved process efficiency, lesser operating and maintenance cost, and greater environmental safety. Reliability and maintainability of the system are usually considered at the design stage and is dependent on the system configuration. However, with the growing need for energy conservation, most of the existing process systems are either modified or are in a state of modification with a view for improving energy efficiency. Often these modifications result in a change in system configuration there by affecting the system reliability. It is important that system modifications for improving energy efficiency should not be at the cost of reliability. Any new proposal for improving the energy efficiency of the process or equipments should prove itself to be economically feasible for gaining acceptance for implementation. In order to arrive at the economic feasibility of the new proposal, the general trend is to compare the benefits that can be derived over the lifetime as well as the operating and maintenance costs with the investment to be made. Quite often it happens that the reliability aspects (or loss due to unavailability) are not taken into consideration. Plant availability is a critical factor for the economic performance evaluation of any process plant.The focus of the present work is to study the effect of system modification for improving energy efficiency on system reliability. A generalized model for the valuation of process system incorporating reliability is developed, which is used as a tool for the analysis. It can provide an awareness of the potential performance improvements of the process system and can be used to arrive at the change in process system value resulting from system modification. The model also arrives at the pay back of the modified system by taking reliability aspects also into consideration. It is also used to study the effect of various operating parameters on system value. The concept of breakeven availability is introduced and an algorithm for allocation of component reliabilities of the modified process system based on the breakeven system availability is also developed. The model was applied to various industrial situations.

The service quality of any sector has two major aspects namely technical and functional. Technical quality can be attained by maintaining technical specification as decided by the organization. Functional quality refers to the manner which service is delivered to customer which can be assessed by the customer feed backs. A field survey was conducted based on the management tool SERVQUAL, by designing 28 constructs under 7 dimensions of service quality. Stratified sampling techniques were used to get 336 valid responses and the gap scores of expectations and perceptions are analyzed using statistical techniques to identify the weakest dimension. To assess the technical aspects of availability six months live outage data of base transceiver were collected. The statistical and exploratory techniques were used to model the network performance. The failure patterns have been modeled in competing risk models and probability distribution of service outage and restorations were parameterized. Since the availability of network is a function of the reliability and maintainability of the network elements, any service provider who wishes to keep up their service level agreements on availability should be aware of the variability of these elements and its effects on interactions. The availability variations were studied by designing a discrete time event simulation model with probabilistic input parameters. The probabilistic distribution parameters arrived from live data analysis was used to design experiments to define the availability domain of the network under consideration. The availability domain can be used as a reference for planning and implementing maintenance activities. A new metric is proposed which incorporates a consistency index along with key service parameters that can be used to compare the performance of different service providers. The developed tool can be used for reliability analysis of mobile communication systems and assumes greater significance in the wake of mobile portability facility. It is also possible to have a relative measure of the effectiveness of different service providers.

Reliability analysis is a well established branch of statistics that deals with the statistical study of different aspects of lifetimes of a system of components. As we pointed out earlier that major part of the theory and applications in connection with reliability analysis were discussed based on the measures in terms of distribution function. In the beginning chapters of the thesis, we have described some attractive features of quantile functions and the relevance of its use in reliability analysis. Motivated by the works of Parzen (1979), Freimer et al. (1988) and Gilchrist (2000), who indicated the scope of quantile functions in reliability analysis and as a follow up of the systematic study in this connection by Nair and Sankaran (2009), in the present work we tried to extend their ideas to develop necessary theoretical framework for lifetime data analysis. In Chapter 1, we have given the relevance and scope of the study and a brief outline of the work we have carried out. Chapter 2 of this thesis is devoted to the presentation of various concepts and their brief reviews, which were useful for the discussions in the subsequent chapters .In the introduction of Chapter 4, we have pointed out the role of ageing concepts in reliability analysis and in identifying life distributions .In Chapter 6, we have studied the first two L-moments of residual life and their relevance in various applications of reliability analysis. We have shown that the first L-moment of residual function is equivalent to the vitality function, which have been widely discussed in the literature .In Chapter 7, we have defined percentile residual life in reversed time (RPRL) and derived its relationship with reversed hazard rate (RHR). We have discussed the characterization problem of RPRL and demonstrated with an example that the RPRL for given does not determine the distribution uniquely
