Estrogen seems to have an essential role in the fibromuscular growth characteristic of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This paper describes the effects of chronic estradiol treatment on Guinea pig prostatic stroma at different ages. Tissues from experimental animals were studied by histological and histochemical procedures, morphometric-stereological analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Marked fibromuscular hypertrophy was observed after estradiol treatment in animals of pre-pubertal and adult ages. Increases in the density and thickness of the collagen and elastic fibers were observed by histochemistry. TEM revealed wide distributions of collagen fibrils and large elastic fibers adjacent to the epithelial basal lamina and between the stromal cells, establishing contacts between them. These results indicate that the Guinea pig prostate simulates the stromal modifications observed in BPH in some aged animals after estrogen treatment at different ages, making it a good model for this disease. In the present study, 1220 plant extracts obtained from 352 plants belonging to 73 families that grow in the Amazon and Atlantic rain forests were screened for cytotoxicity against PC-3 prostate cancer cell lines. Extracts were tested in the single dose of 100 mu g/mL. Activity was observed in 17 aqueous or organic extracts belonging to Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Araceae, Capparaceae, Commelinaceae, Flacourtiaceae, Lecythiclaceae, Leguminosae, Passifloraceae, Rutaceae, and Violaceae.

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori infection is an established risk factor for gastric cancer development, but the exact underlying mechanism still remains obscure. The inactivation of tumor suppressor genes such as p53 and p27(KIP1) is a hypothesized mechanism, although there is no consensus regarding the influence of H. pylori cagA(+) in the development of these genetic alterations. Goals: To verify the relationship among H. pylori infection, p53 mutations and p27(Kip1) Protein (p27) expression in gastric adenocarcinomas (GA) seventy-four tissues were assayed by PCR for H. pylori and cagA presence. Mutational analysis of p53 gene was performed by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). Seventy tissues were analyzed by an immunohistochemical method for p27 expression. Results: From the samples examined, 95% (70/74) were H. pylori positive, 63% cagA(+). Altered p53 electrophoretic mobility was found in 72% of cases and significantly more frequent in the presence of cagA. Considerable reduction in p27 expression (19%) was found with a tendency for association between cagA(+) and p27(-), although the results were not statistically significant. Concomitant alterations of both suppressor genes were detected in 60% of cases. In the cases cagA(+), 66.7% of them had these concomitant alterations. Conclusions: The data suggest that H. pylori cagA(+) contributes to p53 alteration and indicate that concomitant gene inactivation, with reduced p27 expression, may be a mechanism in which H. pylori can promote the development and progression of gastric cancer. Two cases of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the papillary type, from minor salivary glands were studied by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. One case exhibited a predominance of the papillary pattern, whereas the other presented the following patterns of histological appearance: papillary, solid, pseudocystic and tubular. Utilizing the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method, the intermediate filament vimentin, keratin and S100 protein were observed in tumor cells. The immunohistochemical analysis revealed two types of neoplastic cells: myoepithelial and luminal.

A tubular adenocarcinoma of the colon with solid area composed by small cells that was found by immunohistochemistry study using antibody to neuron-specific enolase (NSE) to possess neuroendocrine differentiation is related. In another areas of the tumor were visualized keratinizing squamous cells. The presence of neuro-endocrine and squamous cells features provide further evidence that neoplastic colonic cells have the capacity for multi-directional differentiation. The implications of this combination in relation to theories of tumor origin and differentiation and the prognostic significance of neuro-endocrine cells in malignant neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract are discussed.
