Polymeric peroxides have received renewed attention in the recent past, in view of some significant explorations of their physical and chemical properties. The potential of polymeric peroxides as a class, as specialized fuel, and the need to synthesize such new materials have been reported in the literature. So far, this class of polymers is constituted only by a dozen or so polyperoxides. From the point of view of their use in propellant applications, the importance lies in making materials which are easy to handle etc., unlike the earlier reported poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP), a sticky semi-solid mass. However, judging from the better combustion characteristics, exploring aromatic monomers was thought worthwhile. In this preliminary communication, the synthesis of a new polymeric peroxide made from 1,4-divinylbenzene is reported. The polymer obtained was in powder form and had an exothermic heat of degradation approximately equal to that of PSP. 4 ref.--AA

Two segmented polyethylene oxides, SPEO-3 and SPEO-4, were prepared using a novel transetherification methodology. Their structures were confirmed by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The complexation of these SPEO's with alkali-metal ions in solution was investigated by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The mole-fraction method was used to determine the complexation ratio of SPEO with LIClO4 at 25 degrees C, which showed that these formed 1:1 (polymer repeat unit/salt) complexes. The association constant, K, for the complex formation was calculated from the variation of the chemical shift values with salt concentration, using a standard nonlinear least-square fitting procedure. The maximum change in chemical shift (Delta delta) and the K values suggest that both SPEO-3 and SPEO-4 formed stronger complexes with lithium salts than with sodium salts. Unexpectedly, the K values were found to be different, when the variation of delta of different carbons was used in the fitting procedure. This suggests that several possible complexed species may be in equilibrium with the uncomplexed one. Structurally similar model compounds were also prepared and their complexation studies indicated that all of them also formed 1:1 complexes with Li salts. Interestingly, it was observed that the polymers gave higher K values suggesting the formation of more stable complexes in polymers when compared to the model analogues. A homologous series of alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside amphiphiles was prepared,in an effort to identify the role of hydroxyl group in the mesomorphic behavior of alkyl glycosides. Synthesis was performed by a chlorination of the sugar moiety in alkyl-beta-D-glucopyranosides with methylsulfonyl chloride in DMF, followed by a metal mediated dehalogenation to secure alkyl 6-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosides, wherein the alkyl chain length varied from C-9 to C-16. The mesomorphic behavior of these 6-deoxy alkyl glycosides was assessed using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction method. Whereas the lower homologues exhibited a monotropic SmA phase till sub-ambient temperatures, the higher homologues formed a plastic phase. A partial interdigitized bilaye structure of SmA phase is inferred from experimental d-spacing and computationally derived lengths of the molecules. The results were compared with those of normal alkyl glucopyranosides, retained with hydroxyl groups at C-2-C-6 carbons, and alkyl 2-deoxy-glucopyranosides, devoid of a hydroxyl group at C-2 and the comparison showed important differences in the mesomorphic behavior.(C)2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The humid aging of composite propellants containing a terpolymer of polybutadiene, acrylic acid, and acrylonitrile (PBAN) as a binder has been studied as a function of aging temperature, relative humidity, and aging time. Three composite types - AP-PBAN, AP-Al-PBAN, and AP-(Al-Mg) alloy- PBAN - have been studied. The burning rates of all three propellant types were unaffected by aging. The calorimetric values of composites containing aluminum-magnesium alloy decreased on aging, and the lattice parameter of the alloy decreased to a value close to that of aluminum. Water absorption in all of the samples increased with increases in the temperature, relative humidity, and aging time. The compression strength of the nonmetalized and aluminized samples decreased on aging, whereas that of the composites containing the alloy increased. The latter effect has been traced to reaction of residual carboxyl groups on the polymer chains with magnesium, leading to cross-linking. The reaction between the -COOH groups and magnesium has been proved using infrared spectroscopy. (Author)

Mesoporous intercalation compounds consisting of two differentdistributions of pores represent a potentially attractive material for high-rate cathodes. A mesoporous LiFePO4/C composite with two sizes of pores is prepared for the first time via a solution-based polymer templating technique. The precursor of the LiFePO4/C composite is heated at different temperatures in the range from 600 to 800 degrees C to study the effect of crystallinity, porosity, and morphology on the electrochemical performance. The composite is found to attain reduction in the surface area, carbon content, and porosity upon increasing temperature. Nonetheless, the composite prepared at 700 degrees C with pore-size distributions of around 4 and 50 nm exhibits a high rate capability and stable capacity retention upon cycling.

We calculate the binding energy of a hole pair within the extended Anderson Hamiltonian for the high-Tc cuprates including a Cu impurity and an oxygen-derived band. The results indicate that stable hole pairs can be formed for intra-atomic and interatomic Coulomb repulsion strengths larger than 6 and 3.5 eV, respectively. It is also shown that the total hybridization strength between the Cu 3d and oxygen p band should be less than 2.5 eV. The hole pairing takes place primarily within the oxygen-derived p band. The range of parameter values for which hole pairing occurs is also consistent with the earlier photoemission results from these cuprates.

The need for high purity materials for the growth of epitaxial layers of GaAs and the limitations of present source materials are discussed. A for purifying bulk quantitites of GaAs using chemical vapour transport is presented. GaAs is contained in a silica capsule which has a small orifice allow movement of gas between inside and outside. The capsule is contained in a heated tube and hydrogen chloride is used as the transporting agent. Growth rates of 0.1 g/h have been obtained and evidence for the purification is presented along with a discussion of the principles involved. The potentialities of the method for both purification and for the growth of single crystal substrate material are stressed.--AA

Bonding between ammonium perchlorate (AP) and hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), constituting a nonreinforcing filler system, has been studied in the presence of a unique bonding agent (BA)–a switter ion molecule, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivative of 1,1′-bisacetylferrocene (DNPHD AF). Extensive conjugation and a permanent ionic character makes the DNPHD AF to bond strongly with the ionic oxidizer AP. Through its terminal OH group, HTPH bonds with the NO2 groups of DNPHD AF. Bonding sites in the molecules have been located from IR studies and from the first-order rate constant measurements of the bonding of DNPHD AF and other model BAs with HTPB and AP. The bonding ability of DNPHD AF is further evidenced from SEM micrographs.

Colloid of palladium nanoparticles has been prepared by the Solvated Metal Atom Dispersion (SMAD) method. Reaction of Pd(0) nanopowder obtained upon precipitation from the colloid, with ammonia borane (H3N center dot BH3, AB) in aqueous solutions at room temperature results in the generation of active hydrogen atoms. The active hydrogen atoms either combine with one another resulting in H-2 evolution or diffuse into the Pd lattice to afford PdHx. Diffusion of hydrogen atoms leads to an expansion of the Pd lattice. The diffused hydrogen atoms are distributed uniformly over the entire particle. These features were established using powder XRD and electron microscopy studies. The H-1 NMR spectral studies of PdHx before and after desorption of H-2 revealed that the hydrogen atoms trapped inside Pd lattice are hydridic in nature. Desorption of hydrogen from PdHx did not result in complete reversibility suggesting that some hydrogen atoms are strongly trapped inside the Pd lattice. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Chlorine has been substituted at the 2- and 4-positions in the pyridine and quinoline rings of the corresponding N-oxides and 35Cl n.q.r. spectra have been studied in the temperature range 77–300 K. The change in the n.q.r. frequencies in N-oxides as compared to their parent compounds are interpreted in terms of the conjugative effect and the inductive effect of the N+—O– group. The negative temperature coefficients of the resonance frequencies in chloropyridine-N-oxides have been analysed using the Bayer, Kushida and Brown equations. The calculated torsional frequencies, which are in the range 52–78 cm–1, are found to be only slightly temperature dependent.

Dicobalt(II) complexes [{(B)Co-11)(2)(mu-dtdp)(2)] (1-3) of 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid (dtdp) and phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido13,2-a:2',3'-clphenazine (dppz in 3), have been prepared, characterized and their photo-induced anaerobic DNA cleavage activity studied. The elemental analysis and mass spectral data suggest binuclear formulation of the complexes. The redox inactive complexes have magnetically non-interacting dicobalt(II) core showing magnetic moment of similar to 3.9 p per cobalt(II) center. The complexes show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA giving K-b values within 4.3 x 10(5)-4.0 x 10(6) M-1. Thermal melting and viscosity data predict DNA groove binding and/or partial intercalative nature of the complexes. The complexes show significant anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in green light under argon atmosphere possibly involving radical species generated from the disulfide moiety in a type-I pathway. The DNA cleavage reaction under aerobic medium in green light is found to involve hydroxyl radical species. The dppz complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cervical cancer cells with an IC50 value of 2.31 mu M in UV-A light of 365 nm, while it is essentially non-toxic in dark giving an IC50 value of >200 mu M. A significant reduction of the dark toxicity of the organic dppz base (IC50 = 8.3 mu M in dark) is observed on binding to the cobalt(II) center while essentially retaining its photocytotoxicity in UV-A light (IC50 = 0.4 mu M).
