A new approach to generating clean energy has been studied by several researchers, among which one can highlight the steam reforming of biogas. The Biogas is result of decomposition of organic matter and it hasn’t been availed in the global level, instead, the biogas has been burned in flare or discarded into the atmosphere providing damage to the environment. The generation of vector biogas energy can be realized through its steam reforming and this work examines briefly the types of digesters used for biogas generation, studying the process of steam reforming to generate hydrogen as energy vector, analyzing each step in detail, seeking to adapt its main features an ethanol reformer for a biogas reformer. Besides this it is estimated the yield of the reform process and the boiler efficiency for efficiency of the process

This work evaluates fluorinated thin films and their composites for sensor development. Composites were produced using 5 µm starch particles and plasma films obtained from organic fluorinated and silicon compounds reactants. Silicon wafers and aluminum trenches were used as substrates. Film thickness, refractive index and chemical structure were also determined. Scanning electron microscopy shows conformal deposition on aluminum trenches. Films deposited on silicon were exposed to vapor of volatile organic compounds and CV curves were obtained. A qualitative model (FemLab 3.2® program) was proposed for the electronic behavior. These environmentally correct films can be used in electronic devices and preferentially reacted to polar compounds. Nonetheless, due to the difficulty in signal recovery, these films are more effective in one-way sensors, in sub-ppm range.

A study was conducted to evaluate the s of dietary inorganic and organic trace minerals in two levels of supplementation regarding performance, diarrhea occurrence, hematological parameters, fecal mineral excretion and mineral retention in metacarpals and liver of weanling pigs. Seventy piglets weaned at 21 days of age with an average initial body weight of 6.70 ± 0.38 kg were allotted in five treatments: control diet (no added trace mineral premix); 50% ITMP (control diet with inorganic trace mineral premix supplying only 50% of trace mineral requirements); 50% OTMP (control diet with organic trace mineral premix supplying only 50% of trace mineral requirements); 100% ITMP (control diet with inorganic trace mineral premix supplying 100% of trace mineral requirements); and 100% OTMP (control diet with organic trace mineral premix supplying 100% of trace mineral requirements). Feed intake and daily weight gain were not affected by treatments, however, piglets supplemented by trace minerals presented better gain:feed ratio. No differences were observed at calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium and sulfur excreted in feces per kilogram of feed intake. Treatments did not affect calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur and iron content in metacarpals. Trace mineral supplementation, regardless of level and source, improved the performance of piglets.

Organic-inorganic hybrids containing methacrylic acid (McOH, CH(2)= C(CH(3))COOH)) modified zirconium tetrapropoxide, Zr(OPr(n))(4), classed as di-ureasil-zirconium oxo-cluster hybrids, have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies, Si and C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). XRD and SAXS results have pointed out the presence of Si- and Zr-based nanobuilding blocks (NBBs) dispersed into the organic phase. Inter-NBBs correlation distances have been estimated for the pure di-ureasil and a model compound obtained. by hydrolysis/condensation of Zr(OPr(n))(4):McOH (molar ratio 1: 1): d(Si) approximate to 26 +/- 1 angstrom and d(Zr) approximate to 16 +/- 1 angstrom, respectively. In the case of the di-ureasil-zirconium oxo-cluster hybrids, these distances depend on the Zr relative molar percentage (rel. mol. Zr %) (d(Si) ranges from 18 to 25 angstrom and d(Zr) from 14 to 23 angstrom, as the rel. mol. Zr % increases from 5 to 75), suggesting that the Si- and Zr-based clusters are interconstrained. Complementary data from FT-IR, FT-Raman, (29)Si and (13)C NMR, and AFM support to a structural model where McOH-modified Zr-based NBBs (Zr-OMc) are present over the whole range of composition. At low Zr-OMc contents (rel. mol. Zr % <30) the clusters are well-dispersed within the di-ureasil host, whereas segregation occurs at the 0.1 mu m scale at high Zr-OMc concentration (rel. mol. Zr % = 50). No Zr-O-Si heterocondensation has been discerned. Monomode waveguides, diffractions gratings, and Fabry-Perot cavities have been written through the exposure of the hybrid monoliths to UV light. FT-Raman has shown that the chemical process that takes place under illumination is the polymerization of the methacrylate groups of the Zr-OMc NBBs. The guidance region in patterned channels is a Gaussian section located below the exposed surface with typical dimensions of 320 mu m wide and 88 mu m deep. The effective refractive index is 1.5162 (maximum index contrast on the order of 1 x 10(-4)) and the reflection coeficient of the Fabry-Perot cavity (formed by a grating patterned into a 0.278 cm channel) is 0.042 with a free spectral range value of 35.6 GHz.

Four sediment cores were sampled from Lake Arari, located on Marajo Island at the mouth of the Amazon River. The island's vegetation cover is composed mainly of Amazon coastal forest, herbaceous and varzea vegetation. The integration of data on sedimentary structures, pollen, carbon and nitrogen isotope records, C/N ratios and radiocarbon ages allowed the identification of changes in vegetation and the sources of organic matter accumulated in the lake during the Holocene. The data indicate a relatively high flow energy, marine water influence and the presence of mangroves during the lagoon phase between 8990 and 8690 cal yr B.P. and 2310-2230 cal yr B.P. Between 2310 and 2230 cal yr B.P. and similar to 1000 cal yr B.P., the flow energy decreased and the mangroves were replaced by herbaceous vegetation following the decline in marine influence, likely due to the increase in freshwater river discharge. During the last 1000 years, Lake Arari was established in association with the expansion of herbaceous vegetation and the dominance of freshwater algae. (C) 2011 Elsevier BM. All rights reserved.

In this retrospective study we evaluated the pretherapeutic mRNA expression of the hOCT1 (human organic cation transporter 1) gene in patients with chronic-phase (CP) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who varied in terms of their response to imatinib (IM). hOCT1 mRNA was quantified by real-time PCR. Patients were classified as expressing either high (n = 44) or low hOCT1 mRNA (n = 44). The complete cytogenetic response rates observed at 6, 12 and 18 months were 47.7, 84.1 and 91%, respectively, in patients with high hOCT1 mRNA and 47.5, 81.8 and 86.3%, respectively, in patients with low hOCT1 transcripts. The major molecular response rates were not significantly different between patients with high and low hOCT1 mRNA after 6 months of therapy (22.7 vs. 9.1%; p = 0.07), but they were significantly different after 12 months (54.5 vs. 31.8%; p = 0.026) and 18 months (77.2 vs. 56.8%; p = 0.034). Complete molecular responses were observed in 5 patients with low and 17 patients with high hOCT1 mRNA (p = 0.003). The 5-year event-free and overall survival analyses revealed no significant differences between the groups. These data imply that knowledge of the pretherapeutic level of hOCT1 could be a useful marker to predict IM therapy outcome in treatment-naive CP CML patients. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

Background: Prolonged preoperative fasting increases insulin resistance (IR). The authors investigated whether an abbreviated preoperative fast with glutamine (GLN) plus a carbohydrate (CHO)-based beverage would improve the organic response after surgery. Methods: Forty-eight female patients (19-62 years) were randomized to either standard fasting (control group) or to fasting with 1 of 3 different beverages before video-cholecystectomy. Beverages were consumed 8 hours (400 mL; placebo group: water; GLN group: water with 50 g maltodextrine plus 40 g GLN; and CHO group: water with 50 g maltodextrine) and 2 hours (200 mL; placebo: water; GLN: water with 25 g maltodextrine plus 10 g GLN; and CHO: water with 25 g maltodextrine) before anesthesia. Blood samples were collected pre- and postoperatively. Results: The mean (SEM) postoperative homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance was greater (P < .05) in control patients (4.3 [1.3]) than in the other groups (placebo, 1.6 [0.3]; CHO, 2.3 [0.4]; and GLN, 1.5 [0.1]). Glutathione was significantly higher (P < .01) in the GLN group than in both CHO and control groups. Interleukin-6 increased in all groups except the GLN group. The C-reactive protein/albumin ratio was higher (P < .05) in controls than in CHO and GLN groups. The nitrogen balance was less negative in GLN (-2.5 [0.8] gN) than in both placebo (-9.0 [2] gN; P = .001) and control (-6.6 [0.4] gN; P = .04) groups. Conclusions Preoperative intake of a GLN-enriched CHO beverage appears to improve IR and antioxidant defenses and decreases the inflammatory response after video-cholecystectomy. Crown ethers have the ability of solubilizing inorganic salts in apolar solvents and to promote chemical reactions by phase-transfer catalysis. However, details on how crown ethers catalyze ionic S(N)2 reactions and control selectivity are not well understood. In this work, we have used high level theoretical calculations to shed light on the details of phase-transfer catalysis mechanism of KF reaction with alkyl halides promoted by 18-crown-6. A complete analysis of the of the model reaction between KF(18-crown-6) and ethyl bromide reveals that the calculations can accurately predict the product ratio and the overall kinetics. Our results point out the importance of the K* ion and of the crown ether ring in determining product selectivity. While the K* ion favors the S(N)2 over the E2 anti pathway, the crown ether ring favors the S(N)2 over E2 syn route. The combination effects lead to a predicted 94% for the S(N)2 pathway in excellent agreement with the experimental value of 92%. A detailed analysis of the overall mechanism of the reaction under phase-transfer conditions also reveals that the KBr product generated in the nucleophilic fluorination acts as an inhibitor of the 18-crown-6 catalyst and it is responsible for the observed slow reaction rate. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (magnetite) (MNPs) were prepared using different organic and inorganic bases. Strong inorganic base (KOH) and organic bases (NH4OH and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)) were used in the syntheses of the MNPs. The MNPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and magnetization measurements. MNPs prepared with strong inorganic base yielded an average size of 100 nm, whereas the average size of the MNPs prepared with the organic bases was 150 nm. The main competitive phase for MNPs prepared with the strong inorganic and organic bases was maghemite; however, syntheses with KOH yielded a pure magnetite phase. The transfection study performed with the MNPs revealed that the highest transfection rate was obtained with the MNPs prepared with KOH (74%). The correlation between the magnetic parameters and the transfection ratio without transfection agents indicated that MNPs prepared with KOH were a better vector for possible applications of these MNPs in biomedicine. HeLa cells incubated with MNP-KOH at 10 mu g/mL for 24 and 48 h exhibited a decrease in population in comparison with the control cells and it was presumably related to the toxicity of the MNPs. However, the cells incubated with MNP-KOH at 50 and 100 mu g/mL presented a very small difference in the viability between the cell populations studied at 24 and 48 h. These data illustrate the viability of HeLa cells treated with MNP-KOH and suggest the potential use of these MNPs in biomedical applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
