Clinical utility of biodegradable magnesium implants is undermined by the untimely degradation of these materials in vivo. Their high corrosion rate leads to loss of mechanical integrity, peri–implant alkalization and localised accumulation of hydrogen gas. Biodegradable coatings were produced on pure magnesium using RF plasma polymerisation. A monoterpene alcohol with known anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties was used as a polymer precursor. The addition of the polymeric layer was found to reduce the degradation rate of magnesium in simulated body fluid. The in vitro studies indicated good cytocompatibility of non-adherent THP–1 cells and mouse macrophage cells with the polymer, and the polymer coated sample. The viability of THP–1 cells was significantly improved when in contact with polymer encapsulated magnesium compared to unmodified samples. Collectively, these results suggest plasma enhanced polymer encapsulation of magnesium as a suitable method to control degradation kinetics of this biomaterial.

This chapter undertakes a study of how elite schools in India have a historical, colonial legacy while incorporating global, market oriented, international agenda to fit in with present times. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notion of elite schools and Foucault’s theory of discourse, a qualitative analysis is undertaken of 21 elite schools. The primary argument advanced is that the websites of the schools contain the discourses of privilege and distinction along with the discourses of inclusion and exclusion, market ideology and individual merit with the aim being to promote a local, global elite ascendancy.

The term urban acupuncture refers to a concept where a localised intervention or treatment is used for the revitalisation and (re)creation of cities by targeting strategic points, poking or activating networks into action. These actions impart stimuli for further responses and opportunity through small projects rather than large developments. Previous research showed that daily manifestations of career adaptability fluctuate within individuals over short periods of time, and predict important daily job and career outcomes. Using a quantitative daily diary study design (N = 156 employees; 591 daily entries), the author investigated daily job characteristics (i.e., daily job demands, daily job autonomy, and daily supervisory career mentoring) and daily individual characteristics (i.e., daily Big Five personality characteristics, daily core self-evaluations, and daily temporal focus) as within-person predictors of daily career adaptability and its four dimensions (concern, control, curiosity, and confidence). Results showed that daily job demands, daily job autonomy, daily conscientiousness, daily openness to experience, as well as daily past and future temporal focus positively predicted daily career adaptability. Differential results emerged for the four career adaptability dimensions. Implications for future research on within-person variability in career adaptability are discussed.
