We have compared the expression pattern of NMDA receptor subunits (NR1 and NR2A-D)and NRI splice variants (NR1-1a/1b,-2a/2b,-3a/3b,4a/4b) in motor neuron populations from adult Wistar rats that are vulnerable (hypoglossal, XII) or resistant (oculomotor, III) to death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The major finding was higher levels of expression of the NR2B subunit in the hypoglossal nucleus. Non-tree-based ('surrogate') methods have been used to identify instances of lateral genetic transfer in microbial genomes but agreement among predictions of different methods can be poor. It has been proposed that this disagreement arises because different surrogate methods are biased towards the detection of certain types of transfer events. This conjecture is supported by a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of 3776 proteins in Escherichia coli K12 MG1655 to map the ages of transfer events relative to one another.

Classical mammalian transient receptor potential channels form non-selective cation channels that open in response to activation of phospholipase C-coupled metabotropic receptors, and are thought to play a key role in calcium homeostasis in non-excitable cells. Within the nervous system transient receptor potential channels are widely distributed but their physiological roles are not well understood. Here we show that in the rat lateral amygdala transient receptor potential channels mediate an excitatory synaptic response to glutamate. Activation of group l etabotropic glutamate receptors on pyramidal neurons in the lateral amygdala with either exogenous or synaptically released glutamate evokes an inward current at negative potentials with a current voltage relationship showing a region of negative slope and steep outward rectification. This current is blocked by inhibiting G protein function with GTP-beta-S, by inhibiting phospholipase C or by infusing transient receptor potential antibodies into lateral amygdala pyramidal neurons. Using RT-PCR and Western blotting we show that transient receptor potential 1, transient receptor potential 4 and transient receptor potential 5 are present in the lateral amygdala. Single cell PCR confirms the presence of transient receptor potential 1 and transient receptor potential 5 in pyramidal neurons and we show by co-immunoprecipitation that transient receptor potential 1 and transient receptor potential 5 co-assemble as a heteromultimers in the amygdala. These results show that in lateral amygdala pyramidal neurons synaptically released glutamate activates transient receptor potential channels, which we propose are likely to be heteromultimeric channels containing transient receptor potential 1 and transient receptor potential 5/transient receptor potential 4. Biventdcular (BV) pacing is evaluated as an alternative treatment for patients with dilated cardiomyppathy (both ischemic and non-ischemic) and end-stage heart failure. Colour tissue Doppler imaging using echocardiography allows noninvasive, quantitative assessment of radial motion in the long-axis with measurement of peak systolic velocity timing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate quantitatively, the systolic performance of the left ventricle and the resynchrenization of contraction (before vs after implantation). Patients and methods: 25 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (11 ischemic), NYHA class III or IV, QRS duration >120 ms received a biventricular pacemaker. Routine 2D echo and colour tissue Doppler imaging were performed before and within 1 week following implantation. LVEF was assessed using the biplane Sampson's method.Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and time to PSV (TPV) were assessed in 4 regions (basal anterior, inferior, lateral and septal). By averaging the TPV from all 4 regions, a synchronization index was dedved from these measurements. Reaults: LVEF improved by 9±9% following pacing; 17 patients improved LVEF 5% or more. The change in PSV in the septal and lateral regions related significantly to the change in LVEF (r=0.74, r=0.62).The change in synchronization index before vs after pacing (as a measurement of REsynchronization) was related to the change in LVEF (y=120x+5.6, r=0.79, P

In this paper we present an algorithm as the combination of a low level morphological operation and model based Global Circular Shortest Path scheme to explore the segmentation of the Right Ventricle. Traditional morphological operations were employed to obtain the region of interest, and adjust it to generate a mask. The image cropped by the mask is then partitioned into a few overlapping regions. Global Circular Shortest Path algorithm is then applied to extract the contour from each partition. The final step is to re-assemble the partitions to create the whole contour. The technique is deemed quite reliable and robust, as this is illustrated by a very good agreement between the extracted contour and the expert manual drawing output.
