Different phases of Eu3+ activated gadolinium oxide (Gd (OH)(3), GdOOH and Gd2O3) nanorods have been prepared by the hydrothermal method with and without cityl trimethyl ammonium bromide (GAB) surfactant. Cubic Gd2O3:Eu (8 mol%) red phosphor has been prepared by the dehydration of corresponding hydroxide Gd(OH)(3):Eu after calcinations at 350 and 600 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. When Eu3+ ions were introduced into Gd(OH)(3), lattice sites which replace the original Gd3+ ions, a strong red emission centered at 613 nm has been observed upon UV illumination, due to the intrinsic Eu3+ transition between D-5(0) and F-7 configurations. Thermoluminescence glow curves of Gd (OH)(3): Eu and Gd2O3:Eu phosphors have been recorded by irradiating with gamma source ((CO)-C-60) in the dose range 10-60 Gy at a heating rate of 6.7 degrees C sec(-1). Well resolved glow peaks in the range 42-45, 67-76,95-103 and 102-125 degrees C were observed. When gamma-irradiation dose increased to 40 Gy, the glow peaks were reduced and with increase in gamma-dose (50 and 60 Gy) results the shift in first two glow peak temperatures at about 20 degrees C and a new shouldered peak at 86 degrees C was observed. It is observed that there is a shift in glow peak temperatures and variation in intensity, which is mainly attributed to different phases of gadolinium oxide. The trapping parameters namely activation energy (E), order of kinetics (b) and frequency factor were calculated using peak shape and the results are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Transforming Growth Factors-beta (TGF-beta s) have been described in many vertebrate species of amphibians, aves and mammals. In this report we demonstrate the presence of TGF-beta 2 in pisces. TGF-beta 2 has been cloned from a fish, Cyrinus carpio, by RT-PCR using degenerate oligonucleotide primers. Sequence analysis of the amplified product and alignment of the deduced amino acid sequence with the human TGF-beta 2 amino acid sequence revealed 81% and 93% identity in the precursor and the mature regions, respectively. The northern blot analysis of fish heart RNA shows a major messenger RNA species of about 8.0 kb and two messages of very low abundance of about 5.0 kb and 4.0 kb. The identification of TGF-beta 2 isoform in Pisces and it's high degree of homology with the mammalian isoform suggests that among all TGF-beta isoforms, TGF-beta 2 is the most conserved during evolution. Plate-shaped products resulting from martensitic, diffusional, and mixed mode transformations in zirconium-base alloys are compared. in the present study. These alloys are particularly suitable for the comparison in view of the fact that the lattice correspondence between the parent beta (bcc) and the product alpha (hcp) or gamma-hydride (fct) phases are remarkably similar for different types of transformations. Crystallographic features such as orientation relations, habit planes, and interface structures associated with these transformations have been compared:, with a view toward examining whether the transformation mechanisms have characteristic imprints on these experimental observables. Martensites exhibiting dislocated lath, internally twinned plate, and self-accommodating three-plate cluster morphologies have been encountered in Zr-2.5Nb alloy. Habit planes corresponding to all these morphologies have been found to be consistent with the predictions based on the invariant plane strain (IFS) criterion. Different morphologies have been found to reflect the manner in which the neighboring martensite variants are assembled. Lattice-invariant shears (LISs) for all these cases have been identified to be either {10 (1) over bar 1}(alpha) ((1) over bar 123)(alpha) slip or twinning on (10 (1) over bar 1)(alpha) planes. Widmanstatten alpha precipitates, forming in a step-quenching treatment, have been shown to have a lath morphology, the alpha/beta interface being decorated with a periodic array of (c + a) dislocations at a spacing of 8 to 10 nm. The line vectors of these dislocations are nearly parallel to the invariant lines. The alpha precipitates, forming in the retained beta phase on aging, exhibit an internally twinned structure with a zigzag habit plane. Average habit planes for the morphologies have been found to lie near the {103}(beta) - {113}(beta) poles, which are close to the specific variant of the {112}(beta) plane, which transforms into a prismatic plane of the type {1 (1) over bar 00}(alpha). The crystallography of the formation of the gamma-hydride phase (fct) from both the alpha and beta phases is seen to match the IFS predictions. While the beta-gamma transformation can be treated approximately as a simple shear on the basal plane involving a change in the stacking sequence, the alpha-gamma transformation call be conceptually broken into a alpha --> beta transformation following the Burgers correspondence and the simple beta-gamma shear process. The active eutectoid decomposition in the Zr-Cu system, beta --> alpha + beta', has been described in terms of cooperative growth of the alpha phase from the beta phase through the Burgers correspondence and of the partially ordered beta' (structurally similar to the equilibrium Zr2Cu phase) through an ordering process. Similarities and differences in crystallographic features of these transformations have been discussed. and the importance of the invariant line vector in deciding the geometry of the corresponding habit planes has been pointed out.

When the variation of secondary compression, with log(10) t is non-linear, the quantification of secondary settlement through the coefficient of secondary compression, C-alpha epsilon, becomes difficult which frequently leads to an underestimate of the settlement, Log(10) delta - log(10) t representation of such true-compression data has the distinct advantage of exhibiting linear secondary compression behaviour over an appreciably larger time span. The slope of the secondary compression portion of the log(10) e - log(10) t curve expressed as Delta(log e)/(log t) and called the 'secondary compression factor', m, proves to be a better alternative to C-alpha epsilon and the prediction of secondary settlement is improved.

Antipeptide and antiidiotypic antibodies to several receptors are known to mimic their respective ligands in transducing signals on binding their receptors. In our attempts to study gonadotropin releasing hormone receptor, antipeptide and antiidiotypic monoclonal antibodies specific to the receptor were established earlier. The antipeptide mAb F1G4 was to a synthetic peptide corresponding to the extracellular domain of human GnRH receptor and the antiidiotypic mAb 4D10C1 was to the idiotype of a GnRH specific mAb. Here we report the physiological effects of the two mAbs on binding the receptor, as investigated using in vitro cultures of(a) human term placental villi and (b) rat pituitaries. The mAb 4D10C1 exerted a dose-dependent release of human chorionic gonadonopin in cultures of human term placental villi as well as luteinising and follicle stimulating hormones in cultures of rat pituitaries.

Aluminium is an element suspected to contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, but its mechanism of action is not clear. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) plays a significant role in feeding behaviour. Our spectroscopic, ELISA, and western blot studies indicate that aluminium interacts with neuropeptide Y and alters significantly the a-helical content. We found that aluminium reduced levels of NPY in the hypothalamus of aged rabbits. NPY polyclonal antibody interaction was found to depend upon the alpha-helical content of NPY. These results clearly show that aluminium alters NPY structure and this could explain the abnormality in feeding behaviour seen in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and its isomorphs have received enormous attention in the last 2 decades. In particular, KTP assumes importance due to its large nonlinear optic and electrooptic coefficients together with the broad thermal and angular acceptance for second harmonic generation. This article provides an overview of the material aspects, structural, physical, and chemical properties and device feasibility of the KTP family of crystals. Some of the current areas of research and development along with their significance in understanding the physical properties as well as device applications are addressed. Optical waveguide fabrication processes and characteristics with their relevance to the present-day technology are highlighted. Studies performed so far have enabled us to understand the fundamental aspects of these materials and what needs to be pursued vigorously is the exploitation of their device applications to the maximum extent.

Ultrafast solvation dynamics in three nonassociated polar solvents, namely, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide, and acetone, have been studied by using the molecular hydrodynamic theory. For solvation in acetonitrile, the solvent memory function required for this study has been obtained from recent dielectric relaxation measurements of Venabales and Schuttenmaer; earlier theoretical studies used only the Kerr relaxation data. As the latter provides only an indirect information regarding the polar dynamical response of the dipolar liquid, it fails to provide a fully quantitative description of the solvation time correlation function, S(t). The present study with full dielectric data, on the other hand, gives excellent agreement with the experimental results. The theory shows that the ultrafast part of the solvation dynamics originates almost entirely from the high-frequency component of dielectric relaxation (with time constant 0.177 ps), although the latter represents only a small part of the latter. For DMSO and acetone, however, the present theory predicts a decay slower than the experimental observation. It is proposed that for these two solvents specific chromophore-solvent interactions might be responsible for the-large discrepancy. On the basis of the theory, two experimental studies have also been proposed.

Thermal and spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on a number of glasses with a wide range of compositions in the pseudoternary glass system, Li2SO4-Li2O-B2O3, to understand the role of sulfate ions in modifying the borate glass structure. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic results indicate that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses. There seems to be some evidence for the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(-1). These conclusions are supported by the observed behavior of glass transition temperatures and molar volumes. The possibility of formation of sulfoborate-type units is discussed from bonding and thermodynamic points of view.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of lithium phosphate (Li2O-P2O5) glasses with varying Li2O content has been carried out. Two different P-O distances corresponding to phosphorus coordination with bridging oxygen (BO) and non-bridging oxygen (NBO) were identified in the simulated glasses. NBO-BO interconversion or bond switching was noted, which results in a dynamic equilibration of the tetrahedral phosphate units (P-n, n = 1,3 indicates the number of bridging oxygen atoms in the coordination of phosphorus). The NBO-BO bond switching is mildly activated with an effective activation barrier of 0.03-0.05 eV. Lithium ion jumps do not appear to be strongly coupled to bond switching. But the number of Li+ ions coordinated to an optimum number of NBOs and the number of Li+ ions jumping out of their sites appear to be correlated. Detailed analysis was made of the dynamics of P-n species and new insights have been obtained regarding ion migration in network-modified phosphate glasses.

Simple and rapid HPLC, GC, and TLC procedures have been developed for detection and determination of nimesulide, a non-pharmacopeial drug, in preformulation and dosage form. Use of these techniques has enabled separation of impurities and the precursor in the bulk material and in formulations. Isocratic reversed-phase HPLC was performed on a C-18 column with methanol-water-acetic acid, 67:32:1 (v/v), as mobile phase and UV detection at 230 nm. Calibration curves were linear over the concentration range 100-1000 mug mL(-1) with a good correlation coefficient (0.9993) and a coefficient of variation of 1.5%. Gas chromatography was performed on an OV-17 packed column with temperature programming and flame-ionization detection. The lower limit of determination by HPLC and GC was 4 ppm. Thin-layer chromatography of nimesulide was performed on silica gel G with toluene-ethyl acetate, 8:2, as mobile phase. Stability testing of the drug was performed under different temperature, humidity, and UV-radiation conditions.

Through the application of negative reduction potential significant reduction of manganic and iron oxides in the ocean manganese nodules can be achieved, liberating the occluded copper, nickel and cobalt for easy dissolution in an acid medium. Electroleaching and electrobioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans at the above negative applied dc potentials resulted in significant dissolution of copper, nickel and cobalt in 1 M H2SO4. The role of galvanic interactions in the bioleaching of ocean manganese nodules in the presence of T thiooxidans is also discussed, (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Two new open-framework iron fluorophosphates, [C(4)N(2)H(12)](0.5) [FeF(HPO(4))(H(2)PO(4))] (I) and [C(4)N(2)H(12)][Fe(4)F(2)(H(2)O)(4)(PO(4))(4)]. 0.5H(2)O (II), were synthesized hydrothermally using piperazine as a templating agent. The structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca, a = 7.2126(2) Angstrom, b = 14.2071(4) Angstrom, c = 17.1338(2) Angstrom, Z = 8. The structure is composed of infinite anionic chains of [FeF(HPO(4))(H(2)PO(4))](n)(-) built by trans-fluorine sharing FeF(2)O(4) octahedra. These chains are similar to those found in tancoite-type minerals. Compound II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n, a = 9.9045(3) Angstrom, b = 12.3011(3) Angstrom, c = 17.3220(4) Angstrom, beta = 103.7010(10)degrees, Z = 4. The structure of compound II has a three-dimensional (3D) architecture with an eight-membered channel along the b axis, in which protonoted piperazine molecules reside. The complex framework is built from two types of secondary building unit (SBU): one hexamer [Fe(3)F(2)(H(2)O)(2)(PO(4))(3)] (SBU6), and one dimer [FeO(4)(H(2)O)(2)PO(4)] (SBU2). The vertex sharing between these SBUs create the 3D structure.

The method of characteristics was used to generate passive earth pressure coefficients for an inclined wall retaining cohesionless backfill material in the presence of pseudostatic horizontal earthquake body forces. The variation of the passive earth pressure coefficients K-pq and K-pgamma with changes in horizontal earthquake acceleration coefficient due to the components of soil unit weight and surcharge pressure, respectively, has been obtained; a closed-form solution for K-pq is also provided. The passive earth resistance has been found to decrease sharply with an increase in the magnitude of horizontal earthquake acceleration. The computed passive earth pressure coefficients were found to be the lowest when compared to all of the previous solutions available in the literature.
