During nanoindentation and ductile-regime machining of silicon, a phenomenon known as “self-healing” takes place in that the microcracks, microfractures, and small spallings generated during the machining are filled by the plastically flowing ductile phase of silicon. However, this phenomenon has not been observed in simulation studies. In this work, using a long-range potential function, molecular dynamics simulation was used to provide an improved explanation of this mechanism. A unique phenomenon of brittle cracking was discovered, typically inclined at an angle of 45° to 55° to the cut surface, leading to the formation of periodic arrays of nanogrooves being filled by plastically flowing silicon during cutting. This observation is supported by the direct imaging. The simulated X-ray diffraction analysis proves that in contrast to experiments, Si-I to Si-II (beta tin) transformation during ductile-regime cutting is highly unlikely and solid-state amorphisation of silicon caused solely by the machining stress rather than the cutting temperature is the key to its brittle-ductile transition observed during the MD simulations

Silica additives in bone substitute materials are topical, clinically interesting and have significant support in the Orthopaedic field. Biosilica, e.g isolated from diatoms, has many advantages over its synthetic counterparts, e.g. it is amorphous, thus will be absorbed by the body, however, issues such as purity, presence of endotoxins and cytotoxicity need to be addressed before it can be further exploited. Biosilica isolated from Cyclotella Meneghiniana was then tested in a mouse model, to test the immunological response, organ toxicity (kidney, spleen, liver) and route of metabolism/excretion of silica. Five-week-old Balb-c mice were injected subcutaneously with a single high dose (50mg/ml) of Si-frustules, Si-frustules + organic linker and vehicle only control. Animals were sacrificed at 1d and 28d. The animal studies were conducted under an ethically approved protocol at Queen’s University, Belfast. The animals showed no adverse stress during the experiment and remained healthy until sacrifice. Blood results using ICP-OES analysis suggest the frustules were metabolized between comparator groups at different rates, and clearly showed elevated levels of silicon in groups injected with frustules relative to control. The histology of organs showed no variation in morphology of mice injected frustules relative compared to the control group.

We examine whether feeding pregnant and lactating rats hydrogenated fats rich in trans fatty acids modifies the plasma lipid profiles and the expression of adipokines involved with insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease in their 90-day-old offspring. Pregnant and lactating Wistar rats were fed with either a control diet (C group) or one enriched with hydrogenated vegetable fat (T group). Upon weaning, the male pups were sorted into four groups: CC, mothers were receiving C and pups were kept on C; CT, mothers were receiving C and pups were fed with T; TT, mothers were receiving T and pups were kept on T; TC, mothers were receiving T and pups were fed with C. Pups' food intake and body weight were quantified weekly and the pups were killed at day 90 of life by decapitation. Blood and carcass as well as retroperitoneal, epididymal, and subcutaneous white adipose tissues were collected. Food intake and body weight were lower in TC and TT, and metabolic efficiency was reduced in TT. Offspring of TT and TC rats had increased white adipose tissue PAI-1 gene expression. Insulin receptor was higher in TT than other groups. Ingestion of hydrogenated vegetable fat by the mother during gestation and lactation could promote deleterious consequences, even after the withdrawal of the causal factor.

Methods Pregnant and lactating Wistar rats were fed with a control diet (C group) or one enriched with hydrogenated vegetable fat (T group). After delivery, male offspring were weighed weekly and killed at day 21 of life by decapitation. Blood and retroperitoneal, epididymal, and subcutaneous white adipose tissues were collected. Results Offspring of T-group rats had increased serum triacylglycerols and cholesterol, white adipose tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and tumor necrosis factor-α gene expression, and carcass lipid content and decreased blood leptin and adiponectin and adiponectin gene expression. Conclusion Ingestion of hydrogenated vegetable fat by the mother during gestation and lactation alters the blood lipid profiles and the expression of proinflammatory adipokynes by the adipose tissue of offspring aged 21 d.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a promising material for electronics due to its hardness, and ability to carry high currents and high operating temperature. SiC films are currently deposited using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at high temperatures 1500–1600 °C. However, there is a need to deposit SiC-based films on the surface of high aspect ratio features at low temperatures. One of the most precise thin film deposition techniques on high-aspect-ratio surfaces that operates at low temperatures is atomic layer deposition (ALD). However, there are currently no known methods for ALD of SiC. Herein, the authors present a first-principles thermodynamic analysis so as to screen different precursor combinations for SiC thin films. The authors do this by calculating the Gibbs energy ΔGΔG of the reaction using density functional theory and including the effects of pressure and temperature. This theoretical model was validated for existing chemical reactions in CVD of SiC at 1000 °C. The precursors disilane (Si2H6), silane (SiH4), or monochlorosilane (SiH3Cl) with ethyne (C2H2), carbontetrachloride (CCl4), or trichloromethane (CHCl3) were predicted to be the most promising for ALD of SiC at 400 °C.

Dans ce projet de recherche, le dépôt des couches minces de carbone amorphe (généralement connu sous le nom de DLC pour Diamond-Like Carbon en anglais) par un procédé de dépôt chimique en phase vapeur assisté par plasma (ou PECVD pour Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor deposition en anglais) a été étudié en utilisant la Spectroscopie d’Émission Optique (OES) et l’analyse partielle par régression des moindres carrés (PLSR). L’objectif de ce mémoire est d’établir un modèle statistique pour prévoir les propriétés des revêtements DLC selon les paramètres du procédé de déposition ou selon les données acquises par OES. Deux séries d’analyse PLSR ont été réalisées. La première examine la corrélation entre les paramètres du procédé et les caractéristiques du plasma pour obtenir une meilleure compréhension du processus de dépôt. La deuxième série montre le potentiel de la technique d’OES comme outil de surveillance du procédé et de prédiction des propriétés de la couche déposée. Les résultats montrent que la prédiction des propriétés des revêtements DLC qui était possible jusqu’à maintenant en se basant sur les paramètres du procédé (la pression, la puissance, et le mode du plasma), serait envisageable désormais grâce aux informations obtenues par OES du plasma (particulièrement les indices qui sont reliées aux concentrations des espèces dans le plasma). En effet, les données obtenues par OES peuvent être utilisées pour surveiller directement le processus de dépôt plutôt que faire une étude complète de l’effet des paramètres du processus, ceux-ci étant strictement reliés au réacteur plasma et étant variables d’un laboratoire à l’autre. La perspective de l’application d’un modèle PLSR intégrant les données de l’OES est aussi démontrée dans cette recherche afin d’élaborer et surveiller un dépôt avec une structure graduelle.

We studied the effect of Silicon (Si) on Casparian band (CB) development, chemical composition of the exodermal CB and Si deposition across the root in the Si accumulators rice and maize and the Si non-accumulator onion. Plants were cultivated in nutrient solution with and without Si supply. The CB development was determined in stained root cross-sections. The outer part of the roots containing the exodermis was isolated after enzymatic treatment. The exodermal suberin was transesterified with MeOH/BF3 and the chemical composition was measured using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) was used to determine the Si deposition across root cross sections. Si promoted CB formation in the roots of Si-accumulator and Si non-accumulator species. The exodermal suberin was decreased in rice and maize due to decreased amounts of aromatic suberin fractions. Si did not affect the concentration of lignin and lignin-like polymers in the outer part of rice, maize and onion roots. The highest Si depositions were found in the tissues containing CB. These data along with literature were used to suggest a mechanism how Si promotes the CB development by forming complexes with phenols.
