The thesis is about Methodism in Warrnambool. The key argument is that the Wesleyan heritage, so important to the early Wesleyan pioneers, continued to shape the life of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and was perpetuated by its leaders, in particular its local lay leaders, for a period of 130 years.

Embodied energy modelling of individual buildings in Melbourne : the inherent energy-cost relationship

This thesis demonstrates a strong relationship between life cycle energy and life cycle cost based on an analysis of thirty recent Melbourne buildings. Embodied energy (initial cost) can be reliably modelled by construction cost (initial cost) and thus be readily available as early design advice, enabling more sustainable development.

Height and cost of buildings in Shanghai and Hong Kong

Initial findings indicated that the curved relationships of height-cost of residential buildings in Shanghai and Hong Kong exhibit different profiles. The differences suggest that, Hong Kong contractors have more expertise in multi-story and high-rise construction than contractors in Shanghai. The dissimilarities also imply that different sets of criteria should be applied in the judgement of height affects on cost in different locations.

The thesis looks at how people use memory and heritage to construct their identity. The conclusion is that memory, heritage and identity are fluid and their construction is dependent on socio-politico-economic circumstances. The thesis therefore calls for the involvement of local stakeholders in the interpretation of heritage places.

Mobilising corporate social responsibility for world cultural heritage conservation

Through case studies and international surveys, this thesis investigates means to mobilise further corporate responsibility for World Cultural Heritage Conservation. It reveals a strong business case for support, based on the sustainable development benefits and shared value for all stakeholders and makes recommendations for using the findings to engage companies.

Will these glasses help? Holocaust videotestimony and the transfer of intangible heritage

An analysis of Erica's videotestimony, presented at the Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Centre in Melbourne, reveals how audio-visual history can act as a medium for the transfer of cultural heritage, despite claims that the trauma of the Holocaust has destroyed the possibility of any meaningful transmissíon. It is argued that the discussion of personal photographs from before and after the Holocaust forms a key component of the videotestimony and constitutes the primary mechanism for intergenerational transfer of Jewish communal heritage, Transfer is further facilitated by the interviewer whose questioning explicitly encourages Erica to reflect on issues of cultural continuity. Significantly, Erica's answers do not always conform to the interviewer's expectations about Jewish communal and religious identification and this can result in tension between the
two. Here too the photographs play an important role in resolving tension between Erica and the interviewer.

Heritage and dialogue : using heritage conservation to strengthen the defences of peace

The Preamble to UNESCO's 1945 Constitution asserted that wars are created in the minds of men and that it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be built. Exploring this proposition was vital in the post World-War II years, but it is equally critical in the 21st century when world efforts towards peace continue to be undermined by intense forms of nationalism and ethnic rivalries that commonly use cultural differences as a justification for conflict.

However, while strengthening intercultural dialogue underlies the creation of UNESCO, its flagship World Heritage program under the 1972 World Heritage Convention seems to be losing touch with this motivating principle. In this paper I explore the politicization of the program and argue that a re-focus is needed if the program is to serve in improving intercultural dialogue, understanding and tolerance, and ultimately peace.

To this end it is suggested that ways in which the World Heritage program might provide a stronger focus on dialogue-creation should be prioritized. These include giving priority to new transnational inscriptions and developing new stratagies for interpreting sites in more cross-culturally sensitive ways.
