Patellar tendon ultrasound appearance is commonly used in clinical practice to diagnose patellar tendinopathy and guide management. Using a longitudinal study design we examined whether or not the presence of a hypoechoic ultrasonographic lesion in an asymptomatic patellar tendon conferred a risk for developing jumper's knee compared with a tendon that was ultrasonographically normal. Ultrasonographic, symptomatic and anthropometric assessment was completed at baseline and followup. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on four tendons that resolved ultrasonographically in the study period. Forty-six patellar tendons were followed over 47±11.8 months. Eighteen tendons were hypoechoic at baseline and 28 were ultrasonographically normal. Five tendons resolved ultrasonographically in the study period. Magnetic resonance imaging in four of these tendons was normal. Seven normal patellar tendons at baseline developed a hypoechoic area but only two became symptomatic. Analysis of ultrasonography at baseline and clinical outcome with Fisher's exact test shows there is no association between baseline ultrasound changes and symptoms at followup. In this study there is no statistically significant relationship between ultrasonographic patellar tendon abnormalities and clinical outcome in elite male athletes. Management of jumper's knee should not be solely based on ultrasonographic appearance; clinical assessment remains the cornerstone of appropriate management.

The low participation rate of women in computing education and the computing industry is a phenomenon that has been recognised by many western countries. While much has been written on the underlying reasons for the low participation in such a growing and dynamic industry, the situation only seems to be worsening. This paper examines briefly a number of approaches taken by researchers in Australia to try and address the problem. One tertiary institution, Victoria University, has undertaken over a ten year period a sequence of projects, aimed at encouraging and supportingfemale students to study information technology and then make a successful transition from university to the workplace. The strategies and outcomes of the most recent project is the focus of this paper. This project concentrated on equipping graduatingfemale students with skills and knowledge to enable them to participate on equal terms with their male counterparts in workgroups and project teams. An outcome from this work was the preparation and distribution of a resource book to graduating female students during 2002.

The idea that organizations need to adopt structures and practices that facilitate 'creativity' has become a central theme in theories of managing organisational innovation and success. This idea has been deployed in organisational theory, HRM, marketing and other domains of organization studies. We argue, however, that in the process of being appropriated from the arts, the concept of creativity has been 'hollowed out' and refashioned to suit the structures of organization as institution, and its needs as a business organization (to make money and establish 'competitive advantage'). This devalued idea of creativity has, in turn, been imposed on arts organisatons, which are impelled to see themselves as 'creative businesses'. Creativity, has been defined as a set of imaginative practices intended to express original ideas, and is in need of defence.

Recent work by Fisher highlighted the importance of making distinctions in levels of measurement of affect. She argued that general measurement of an individual's emotions represents the emotional experience in a person as a single point, or as a summary score of the individual's emotional experience over a period of time. Within-level emotion comparisons, in contrast, are made by assessing the emotional state of an individual at several points in time and then making comparisons between those points, thus, keeping intact the individual's pattern of emotional experience over time. The present argument extends the within/between distinction raised by Fisher at the individual level of analysis to the group or organization level analysis. That is, although affective climate is typically considered as relatively stable or trait-like characteristics of an organization, it can also be thought of as the aggregate measure of people's experiences over time.

This study is about store names as brand signals. Using the framework of Erdem and Swait (1998), hypotheses are developed regarding the effects of store names on consumers' expected product utility. It is relevant to study store names as brand signals because store names can act as additional signals in the consumer purchase decision process. The study focuses in particular on the effects of store name credibility on perceived risk, information costs and perceived product quality. The hypotheses will be tested on data that are currently being collected in a survey among two hundred students.

This research studies the relationship between the existence of whistle blowing procedures and the level of importance placed on whistleblowing procedures, in an environment that claims to have a quality culture. Organisations certified with a basic quality standard, ISO 9000, were surveyed in three separate industries. Certified organisations were selection on the assumption of a basic knowledge and understanding of quality concepts as well as heightened chance of exiting whistleblowing procedures. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data analysis was undertaken. The investigation resulted in evidence that neither the existence of whistleblowing procedures, nor the level of importance placed on whistleblowing procedures, could be predicted by the presence of a quality culture. This investigation highlights the importance of whistleblowing procedures, and identifies further research opportunities on this contentious topic.

As the first stage of a larger project, this paper presents experiences of two e-Entrepreneurs in the light of Open Source Software (OSS) being accepted globally. Unlike proprietary software (such as Windows), OSS comes with its internal details visible to its users. The significant implications of this unique style of software distribution for e-Entrepreneurs are examined. Recommendations arising from the interviews include the need to be technically competent; understanding the reasons behind adopting this strategy; and identifying and addressing customers' requirements. Authors also found similarities between traits (such as being visionary; being responsive to market changes) which make an entrepreneur and e-Entrepreneurs successful.

In an era of globalized information, Internet usage has profound implications for human resource management (HRM). Cultural diversity and technology literature imply that cross-cultural online communication emphasises cultural fault-lines, while simultaneously, building bridges of understanding between members of different cultures. The key tenet of this paper is that diversity oriented HRM (namely the combined use of individualist and collectivist HRM practices) is expected to reduce the cultural fault-lines between individualists and collectivists cultures, positively moderating the cross-cultural online communication effects. Although it is acknowledged that distinguishing values of I/C can increasingly be found within any given culture, the key tenet of the paper is to examine the effect of Hofstede's definition of I/C within the context of cross-cultural online communication.

Although widely researched in education and sport, little research examines employee achievement goal orientations in a work context. This article provides validity and reliability evidence for the Task and Ego Orientation at Work Questionnaire (TEOWQ) from a study of378 employees representing from eight different occupational categories. Confirmatory factor analyses indicate that are-specified model comprising two ego ("Being the best" and "being better than others") and two task sub-factors ("Learning" and "Effort") fit the data better than the original two-factor model. Temporal stationarity and stability of the constructs over time receive support. As hypothesized, task and task-effort orientations relate positively with persistence while ego orientation does not. The TEOWQ appears to be a valid and reliable instrument of achievement orientation in a work setting.
