A new kind of luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid material (denoted Hybrid I) consisting of europium 1,10-phenanthroline complexes covalently attached to a silica-based network was prepared by a sol-gel process. 1,10-Phenanthroline grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate was used as one of the precursors for the preparation of an organic-inorganic hybrid materials. For comparison purposes, the hybrid material (denoted Hybrid II) in which phenanthroline was not grafted onto the silica backbone of the frameworks was also prepared. Elemental analysis; NMR, FT-IR, UV/vis absorption, and luminescence spectroscopies, and luminescence decay analysis were used to characterize the obtained hybrid materials. It is shown that the homogeneity of Hybrid I is superior to that of Hybrid II, and a higher concentration europium can be incorporated into Hybrid I than Hybrid II. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (283 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0-4) transition lines as a result of the efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the EU3+ in Hybrid I. The number of water molecules coordinated to the europium ion was estimated, and the structure of the as-synthesized Hybrid I was predicted on the basis of the experimental results.

By using metal nitrates as starting materials and citric acid as complexing agent, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and Y3Al5O12:Eu (1 mol%) (YAG:Eu) powder phosphors were prepared by a citrate-gel method. The formation process of YAG and YAG:Eu were investigated by means of XRD, TG-DTA and FT-IR spectra. The purified crystalline phases of YAG and YAG:Eu were obtained at 800 degreesC. The crystalline YAG:Eu phosphors showed an orange-red emission with D-5(0)-F-7(1) (591 nm) as the most prominent group, whose intensity was dependent on the pH value of the starting solution, citric acid content and firing temperature. It has been found that the suitable pH and citric acid/metal ratio are 3 and 2 for obtaining the highest emission intensity, respectively. The emission intensity increases steadily with increasing the annealing temperature from 800 to 1200 degreesC, and nearly remains constant after 1200 degreesC. Furthermore, great differences were observed for the lifetimes and the charge transfer band of Eu3+ in crystalline and amorphous states of YAG.

Ansa-zirconocene complex with an allyl substituted silane bridge [(CH2=CHCH2)CH3Si(C5H4)(2)]ZrCl2 (1a) has been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structure of la has been determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The polymer immobilized metallocene catalyst 1b is prepared by the co-polymerization of la with styrene in the presence of radical initiator. The result of ethylene polymerization showed that the polymer immobilized metallocene catalyst kept high activity for ethylene polymerization and was a potential supported catalyst for olefin polymerization.

Organic-inorganic hybrid SiO2 xerogels were prepared by the sol-gel method under various preparation conditions and compositions by using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (A-PS), (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPS), organic acid (CH3COOH) and inorganic acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) as the main precursors. Luminescence and FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the resulted hybrid SiO2 xerogels. The result of FT-IR spectrum shows that the xerogels are composed of non-crystalline -Si-O-Si- networks containing some organic groups such as -NH, -CH and -OH. Under the excitation of 365 nm, all the hybrid xerogels exhibit strong luminescence in the blue region, but the emission intensity and position depend on the starting precursor compositions to a large extent. Suitable amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG500 and PEG10000) in the hybrid xerogels can enhance the emission intensity. Additionally, the emission intensity of the hybrid xerogels increases with heat treatment temperature in the range of ambient to 200degreesC, and vacuum condition is also able to enhance the emission intensity.

Oxyapatite NaY9Si6O26 was prepared by sol-gel method. By choosing the precursors, a single phase compound was obtained. This soft chemical method lowered the reaction temperature by 100degreesC compared with the solid state method. Its morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Several rare earth ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) and Pb2+ ion were doped in this compound. The high resolution emission spectrum of Eu3+ showed that rare earth ions occupied two yttrium sites. In spite of the charge imbalance of Pb2+ with the cations in this compound, it was found that Pb2+ could emit in UV range and transfer its excitation energy to Dy3+ ion.

Phenolphthalein based polyarylate macrocyclic oligomers were selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation reaction of o-phthaloyl dichloride with phenolphthalein. The high selectivity benefits from the role of phenolphthalein as a color indicator, an efficient phase transfer catalyst, acid a preferred conformation of the starting materials as indicated by analyzing a single-crystal X-ray structure of an analogous macrocycle. The melt ROP of phenolphthalein polyarylate cyclic dimer was studied using nucleophilic initiators, The molecular weight of the resulting polymers builds up very rapidly at the very early stage of polymerization but decreases with time. During the ROP of cyclic dimer, analogous macrocycles with higher degree of polymerization (n greater than or equal to 3) and linear oligomers were produced by backbiting reaction especially at later stage of polymerization. Conversion of cyclic dimer is very fast at the earlier stage of polymerization and then increases slowly with time as analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. However, the total amount of cyclic oligomers in the ROP system increases with time at the later stage of polymerization because of the formation of larger macrocycles. The resulting polymers are amorphous. Glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of these polymers are influenced by the polymerization time, type of initiator, and initiator concentration.

An amperometric biosensor for monitoring phenols in the organic phase was constructed by the silica sol-gel immobilization of tyrosinase on a glassy carbon electrode. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials with different sol-gel precursors and polymers were optimized, and the experimental conditions, such as the effect of the solvent, operational potential and enzyme loading were explored for the optimum analytical performance of the enzyme electrode. The biosensor can reach 95% of steady-state current in about 18 s, and the trend in the sensitivity of different phenols is as follows: catechol > phenol >p-cresol. In addition, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constants (K-m(app)) and the stability of the enzyme electrode were discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Blends consisting of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) as the matrix and polyamide 1010 (PA1010) as the dispersed phase were prepared by mixing. The grafting copolymers of HIPS and maleic anhydride (MA), the compatibilizer precursors of the blends, were synthesized. The contents of the IMA in the grafting copolymers are 4.7 wt % and 1.6 wt %, and were assigned as HAM and LMA, respectively. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the domain size of the PA1010 dispersed phase in the HIPS matrix of compatibilized blends decreased comparing with that of uncompatibilized blends. For the blend with 25 wt % HIPS-g-MA component, the T-c of PA1010 shifts towards lower temperature, from 178 to 83 degrees C. It is found that HIPS-g-MA used as the third component has profound effect on the mechanical properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to the chemical reaction taking place in situ during the mixing between the two components of PA1010 and HIPS-g-MA. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A novel method using LB films as precursors to prepare pure inorganic ordered film with periodic structure was developed. Surfactant-stabilized SnO2 nanoparticulate organosols and TiO2 nanoparticulate organosols were prepared and used as spreading solutions. Using LB technique, the good film-forming ability of the surfactant-stabilized SnO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by the determination of the pi -A isotherms. The surfactant-stabilized SnO2 and TiO2 nanoparticulate monolayers were fabricated on the water surface and then were transferred to solid substrates (CaF2, quartz, silicon, and so on) alternately, layer-by-layer. Then the as-deposited alternate LB film was treated at different temperatures. The as-deposited alternate LB film and the treated film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that our method was successful. The as-deposited alternate LB film formed a periodic structure with a long spacing of 6.5 nm that was composed of SnO2 nanoparticles, TiO2 nanoparticles, and arachidic acid. The treated film composed of SnO2 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanoparticles formed a pure inorganic periodic structure with an ordered distance of 5.4 nm. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

A new approach for the crosslinking of polyimides via the lactamization of spirodilactone unit in polyimide backbone was studied by two means: model reaction and the comparison of the properties of the polyimide precursors to those of the crosslinking polymers. Polyimides 4 and 5 were soluble in N,N'dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N'-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and other common organic solvents, whereas their corresponding crosslinking polymers were insoluble in these solvents. The glass transition temperatures for polyimide 5 and its crosslinking polymer were 262 degrees C and 291 degrees C, whereas those for polyimide 4 and its crosslinking polymer were 265 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The weight-loss rate of the crosslinling polymers was apparently slower than that of the precursors when the temperature was >400 degrees C. The 10% weight-loss temperature for the polyimides 4 and 5 was <500 degrees C, whereas that for the crosslinking polymers was close to or above 600 degrees C. The results indicate that this type of crosslinking polymer has good thermal properties. The temperature for the formation of lactam was above 180 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Some novel macrocyclic (arylene ether sulfone) containing cardo groups and (arylene ether ketone sulfone) oligomers have been synthesized in high yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4'-difluorophenylsulfone with bisphenols in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under a pseudo-high-dilution condition. Detailed structural characterization of these oligomers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (f.a.b.-m.s.), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (n.m.r.) and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirms their cyclic nature, and the composition of the oligomeric mixtures is provided by g.p.c. analysis. Ring polymerization of cyclic oligomers 3a to a high molecular weight polymer with M-w of 59.1 k was achieved by heating at 290 degrees C for 40 min in the presence of a nucleophilic initiator. The polycrystalline powder of para- and meta-dimethyl ester of pyromellitic acid (PMDE) have been prepared by fractional crystallization, and their crystal structures have been determined by Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD). Both p-PMDE and m-PMDE was found to be orthorhombic crystal system, and their unit cell parameters a = 0.840 nm, b = 0.707 nm, c = 1.136 nm and a = 1.032 nm; b = 0.835 nm, c = 0.714 nm, respectively. Space group all belongs to P-mmm. p-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.388 g . cm(-3), while m-PMDE has two molecules per unit cell with crystal density 1.522 g . cm(-3). Indices of crystal diffraction peaks are also detailed in the present work. The difference in crystal structures between p-PMDE and m-PMDE has thus been used to explain the curing behavior of isomerically pyromellitic dianhydride-based poly(amic ester)s.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of poly(amic methyl ester)s from five aromatic dianhydrides and a diamine, 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), are described. These poly(amic ester)s are obtained by the low-temperature polycondensation from dianhydrides derived diester-diacyl chlorides and ODA in DMAc solution with the inherent viscosities in the 0.5-0.9 dL/g range. These precursors are readily soluble in aprotic solvents. A detailed thermal study of the imidization process is presented, based on dynamic and isothermal TGA measurements, FTIR spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Y4Al2O9 (YAM) was prepared by a sol-gel process, using yttrium and aluminum citrate complexes as precursors. The sol-gel process produced single-phase YAM at 900 degrees C, as opposed to the conventional solid-state reaction, which led to the formation of other phases, even if at 1600 degrees C. The emission and excitation spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in YAM showed the existence of two luminescence centers, agreeing with the crystal structure of YAM. The spectral properties of the samples are discussed.

Six new compounds, alpha,beta-KaHb[GeW(9)M(3)(H2O)(3)O-37]. xH(2)O(M = Al, Ga, In; a + b = 7) and alpha-K9H5[Ge2W18Ga6(H2O)(3)O-74]. 20H(2)O, were synthesized from the lacunary precursors a and beta-GeW9O3410- and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Tungsten-183 NMR spectra of the title complexes consist of two lines with intensity ratio 2:1 as expected for trisubstituted heteropoly anions. The intensity ratio of alpha-Ga compound is 1:2, which is different from others(a:1). With the help of FAB mass spectrum, we concluded that it is a dimer with D-3h structure in aqueous, and the others exist by monomers with C-3v structures.
