To understand harbor seal social and mating strategies, I examined site fidelity, seasonal abundance and distribution, herd integrity, and underwater behavior of individual harbor seals in southern Monterey Bay. Individual harbor seals (n = 444) were identified by natural markings and represented greater than 80% of an estimated 520 seals within this community. Year to year fidelity of individual harbor seals to southern Monterey Bay coastline was 84% (n = 388), and long-term associations (>2 yrs) among individuals were common (>40%). Consistent with these long-term associations, harbor seals were highly social underwater throughout the year. Underwater social behavior included three primary types: (1) visual and acoustic displays, such as vocalizing, surface splashing, and bubble-blowing; (2) playful or agonistic social behavior such as rolling, mounting, attending, and biting; and (3) signal gestures such as head-thrusting, fore-flipper scratch~ng, and growling. Frequency of these types of behavior was related to seal age, gender, season, and resource availability. Underwater behavior had a variety of functions, including promotion of learning and social development, reduction of aggression and preservation of social bonds by maintaining social hierarchy, and facilitation of mate selection during breeding season. Social behavior among adult males was significantly correlated with vocalization characteristics (r = 0.99, X2 = 37.7, p = 0.00087), indicating that seals may assess their competition based on underwater vocalization displays and adopt individual strategies for attracting females during breeding season based on social status. The thermal stability and structure of RF-RF2-AIF(3)-Al(PO3)(3) fluorophosphate glasses were investigated. Analyses of infrared absorbance spectra and Raman spectra reveal that with increasing number of alkali and alkaline earth fluoride components, the sum of P-O-P bond and O-P-O bond increases and glass network is strengthened. Consequently, the inhibition to nucleation and crystallization processes is improved, which is proved by the increment of thermal stability factors AT and S determined by differential scanning calorimetry. In addition, it was found that LiF has poor ability to form glass in univalent alkali fluorides and MgF2 has comparative strong ability to form glass in bivalent alkaline earth fluorides. La crisis económica en la mayoría de los países ha sido impulsada tanto por factores externos como internos que dejaron sus economías en un declive continuado y que comenzó nada más estallar la crisis en los países del mundo. Estados Unidos fue quién contagió al resto de los países con su sistema financiero permisivo y sus hipotecas subprime que contaminaron el panorama financiero mundial. El euro y la competitividad tampoco se salvan por sus efectos limitativos del poder de respuesta de los estados. España, por su parte, contaba con otros factores de índole interno (ej. Burbuja inmobiliaria, actuación del gobierno) que agravaron aún más las consecuencias de la crisis.

用离子束溅射法制备了锆单层薄膜.用设计新型夹具和预置种子方法,对薄膜中结瘤微缺陷的生长过程进行了研究.在高分辨率光学显微镜和扫描电子显微镜下观察发现,结瘤在其生长初期呈现出分形的特征.用分子动力学和薄膜生长的扩散限制聚集模型,薄膜中结瘤微缺陷成核时的分形现象得到了很好的解释.

Thin films of ZrO2, HfO2 and TiO2 were deposited on kinds of substrates by electron beam evaporation (EB), ion assisted deposition (IAD) and dual ion beam sputtering (DIBS). Then some of them were annealed at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was applied to determine the crystalline phase and the grain size of these films, and the results revealed that their microstructures strongly depended on the deposition conditions such as substrate, deposition temperature, deposition method and annealing temperature. Theory of crystal growth and migratory diffusion were applied to explain the difference of crystalline structures between these thin films deposited and treated under various conditions. Turbomáquinas são máquinas operacionais que transferem energia mecânica entre um rotor e um fluido. Estas máquinas têm muitas aplicações industriais. Um dos componentes de uma turbomáquina responsável pela transferência da energia, ou receber a rotação do eixo e transformar em energia de fluido em caso de bomba ou transferir a energia do fluido para o eixo em caso de uma turbina, é o impelidor ou rotor. O fenómeno da cavitação envolve escoamento bifásico: o líquido a ser bombeado e as bolhas de vapor que são formadas durante o processo de bombeamento. O processo de formação dessas bolhas é complexo, mas ocorre principalmente devido a presença de regiões de pressões muito baixas. O colapso dessas bolhas pode muitas vezes levar a deterioração do material, dependendo da intensidade ou da velocidade de colapso das bolhas. O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o comportamento hidrodinâmico do escoamento nos canais do impelidor de uma turbomáquina do tipo radial usando recursos de fluidodinâmica computacional (CFD). Uma abordagem Euler-Lagrange acoplada com o modelo da equação de Langevin foi empregada para estimar a trajetória das bolhas. Resultados das simulações mostram as particularidades de um escoamento líquido-bolha de vapor passando em um canal de geometria curva, fornecendo assim informações que podem nos ajudar na prevenção da cavitação nessas máquinas.

As pontes rodoviárias metálicas e mistas (aço-concreto) são submetidas a um grande número de carregamentos repetitivos de diferentes magnitudes, ao longo do tempo. Estas ações dinâmicas podem causar a nucleação de fraturas ou mesmo a propagação destas sobre o sistema estrutural. A depender da magnitude, estes efeitos podem comprometer o sistema estrutural e a sua confiabilidade, além de reduzir a vida útil das pontes. Assim sendo, neste trabalho de pesquisa foi investigada a resposta dinâmica de uma ponte mista (aço-concreto), simplesmente apoiada, com vão de 40,0 m, submetida ao tráfego de veículos sobre a superfície irregular do pavimento. Para tal um modelo numérico representativo do sistema estrutural foi desenvolvido com base no emprego do programa ANSYS, por meio do uso de técnicas usuais de discretização, via método dos elementos finitos. Um estudo paramétrico foi desenvolvido para identificar, de forma qualitativa e quantitativa, o efeito das irregularidades do pavimento sobre o comportamento dinâmico da ponte mista investigada. Em seguida, a verificação do projeto à fadiga do sistema misto foi realizada, com base no emprego do algoritmo de contagem de ciclos Rainflow e em curvas S-N associadas às principais normas de projeto sobre o tema. As conclusões deste trabalho de pesquisa alertam aos engenheiros estruturais para a possibilidade concreta acerca do aumento do dano por fadiga, relacionado às ações dinâmicas de veículos trafegando sobre o tabuleiro de pontes em aço e mistas (aço-concreto).

Atualmente grande parte dos resíduos descartados rotineiramente no Brasil é composta por material plástico como, por exemplo, o polietileno de alta densidade (PEAD), o qual é muito comum no lixo doméstico. Nesta Dissertação, embalagens de PEAD pós-consumo foram coletadas e moídas. Após processamento em extrusora, o material definido como PEAD reciclado (mistura de embalagens brancas, marfins e incolores) foi injetado e as propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas e comparadas com uma amostra de PEAD comercial (HD7600U). A análise térmica através da calorimetria exploratória diferencial (DSC), em conjunto com a análise estatística dos resultados experimentais, também foi conduzida. Em relação à resistência à tração, a diferença entre as amostras de PEAD reciclado e PEAD comercial foram tão pouco expressivas que, dentro das condições experimentais adotadas, se pode afirmar que o material reciclado é equivalente ao comercial.Por sua vez, os modelos cinéticos aplicados na análise térmica revelaram quea amostra de PEAD comercial demonstra um processo de nucleação e crescimento dos cristais mais homogêneo e simples, embora a energia de ativação seja consideravelmente maior do que o das demais amostras de PEAD.

Low-temperature (∼450 °C), scalable chemical vapor deposition of predominantly monolayer (74%) graphene films with an average D/G peak ratio of 0.24 and domain sizes in excess of 220 μm(2) is demonstrated via the design of alloy catalysts. The admixture of Au to polycrystalline Ni allows a controlled decrease in graphene nucleation density, highlighting the role of step edges. In situ, time-, and depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal the role of subsurface C species and allow a coherent model for graphene formation to be devised.

The effects of commercial fishing with crab pots on the physical condition of the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and southern Tanner crab (C. bairdi) were investigated in the Bering Sea and in Russian waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. In crabs that were subjected to pot hauling, the presence of gas embolism and the deformation of gill lamellae were found in histopathological investigations. Crab vitality, which was characterized subjectively through observation of behavioral responses, depended on not only the number of pot hauls but also the time between hauls. Immediately after repeated pot hauls at short time intervals (≤3 days), we observed a rapid decline in vitality of crabs. When hauling intervals were increased to >3 days, the condition of crabs did not significantly change. After repeated pot hauls, concentration of the respiratory pigment hemocyanin ([Hc]) was often lower in the hemolymph of crabs than in the hemolymph of freshly caught animals. Our research indicated that changes in [Hc] in crabs after repeated pot hauls were caused by the effects of decompression and not by starvation of crabs in pots or exposure of crabs to air. We suggest that the decrease in [Hc] in hemolymph of snow and southern Tanner crabs was a response to the adverse effects of decompression and air-bubble disease. The decrease in [Hc] in affected crabs may be a result of mechanisms that regulate internal pressure in damaged gills to optimize respiratory circulation.

Tubular graphite cones (TGCs) with a single-crystal nanotip have been achieved by means of microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition using in-situ-evaporated Fe catalysts. The absence of the disorder-induced D band in Raman spectra revealed the single-crystalline feature of the nanotip. TGCs were found to stem from Fe catalytic carbon spherules on the order of 100 mum diameter, whose critical role in promoting both nucleation and plasma annealing in the formation of highly crystalline TGCs is discussed. The crystalline quality of such TGCs can be further verified by the investigation of their oxidative stability in air. All TGCs can survive up to 600 degrees C without any structural variations, and a few TGCs still survive with an anisotropic etched and stepped nanotip at temperatures up to 800 degrees C, much better than CNTs. Thus, TGCs with single crystalline nanotips are potential candidates for scanning probes in high-temperature oxygen-containing environments.

This paper describes the effect of the state of the inlet boundary layer (laminar or turbulent) on the structure of the endwall flow on two different profiles of low-pressure (LP) turbine blades (solid thin and hollow thick). At present the state of the endwall boundary layer at the inlet of a real LP turbine is not known. The intention of this paper is to show that, for different designs of LP turbine, the state of the inlet boundary layer affects the performance of the blade in very different ways. The testing was completed at low speed in a linear cascade using area traversing, flow visualization and static pressure measurements. The paper shows that, for a laminar inlet boundary layer, the two profiles have a similar loss distribution and structure of endwall flow. However, for a turbulent inlet boundary layer the two profiles are shown to differ significantly in both the total loss and endwall flow structure. The pressure side separation bubble on the solid thin profile is shown to interact with the passage vortex, causing a higher endwall loss than that measured on the hollow thick profile.

An intermittency transport model is proposed for modeling separated-flow transition. The model is based on earlier work on prediction of attached flow bypass transition and is applied for the first time to model transition in a separation bubble at various degrees of free-stream turbulence. The model has been developed so that it takes into account the entrainment of the surrounding fluid. Experimental investigations suggest that it is this phenomena which ultimately determines the extent of the separation bubble. Transition onset is determined via a boundary layer correlation based on momentum thickness at the point of separation. The intermittent flow characteristic of the transition process is modeled via an intermittency transport equation. This accounts for both normal and streamwise variation of intermittency and hence models the entrainment of surrounding flow in a more accurate manner than alternative prescribed intermittency models. The model has been validated against the well established T3L semicircular leading edge flat plate test case for three different degrees of free-stream turbulence characteristic of turbomachinery blade applications.

This paper describes an investigation into the effect that passing wakes have on a separation bubble that exists on the pressure surface and near the leading edge of a low pressure turbine blade. Previous experimental studies have shown that the behaviour of this separation is strongly incidence dependent and that it responds to its disturbance environment. The results presented in this paper examine the effect of wake passing in greater detail. Two dimensional, Reynolds averaged, numerical predictions are first used to examine qualitatively the unsteady interaction between the wakes and the separation bubble. The separation is predicted to consist of spanwise vortices whose development is in phase with the wake passing. However, comparison with experiments shows that the numerical predictions exaggerate the coherence of these vortices and also overpredict the time-averaged length of the separation. Nonetheless, experiments strongly suggest that the predicted phase locking of the vortices in the separation onto the wake passing is physical.

A detailed experimental investigation was conducted into the interaction of a converted wake and a separation bubble on the rear suction surface of a highly loaded low-pressure (LP) turbine blade. Boundary layer measurements, made with 2D LDA, revealed a new transition mechanism resulting from this interaction. Prior to the arrival of the wake, the boundary layer profiles in the separation region are inflexional. The perturbation of the separated shear layer caused by the converting wake causes an inviscid Kelvin-Helmholtz rollup of the shear layer. This results in the breakdown of the laminar shear layer and a rapid wake-induced transition in the separated shear layer.
