University Hall Auditorium

Jenison, Edward S., architect. University Hall was built in 1872; the auditorium completed in 1873. Prior to this time there was no place on campus where students and faculty could assemble. New opera seats were put in during Christmas 1896 at the same time the new dome was installed.

Law Building

Jordan & Anderson, architects. Built 1863. Northwest corner of Diagonal on corner of State and North University. Served as Law School for sixty years. An 1898 addition completely altered the exterior, removed the tower, and added a new south wing (Spier & Rohns, architect). Regents met in south wing until 1933. When Law moved to Hutchins Hall in 1933, building was renamed Haven Hall in honor of Erastus O. Haven, president, 1863-1869. Haven Hall became an LS&A building until it was destroyed by fire June 6, 1950.

(It had been at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.) The organ was transported to Ann Arbor and rebuilt in the old University Hall; formally dedicated in December 1894; in place at the second annual May festival in 1895. Named after Henry S. Frieze, music patron and acting president in the late 1800s. Moved to Hill Auditorium when it was built in 1913. Received extensive repairs in 1928.

Addition completed in 1916. Demolished in 1977 to make room for the expansion of the adjacent Chemistry Building View from southwest with North University St. in background.
