Undoped and co-doped (Ag, Co) ZnO powders were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method without using any capping agent. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the undoped and co-doped ZnO powders have pure hexagonal structure and are consisting of nanosized single-crystalline particles. The size of the nanoparticles increases with increasing Ag concentration from 1 to 5 mol% as compared to that of undoped ZnO. The presence of substitution dopants of Ag and Co in the ZnO host material was confirmed by the Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). Optical absorption measurements indicate blue shift and red-shift in the absorption band edge upon doping concentration of Ag and blue emission was observed by photoluminescence (PL) studies.

We report the variation of glass transition temperature in supported thin films of polymer nanocomposites, consisting of polymer grafted nanoparticles embedded in a homopolymer matrix. We observe a systematic variation of the estimated glass transition temperature T-g, with the volume fraction of added polymer grafted nanoparticles. We have correlated the observed T-g variation with the underlying morphological transitions of the nanoparticle dispersion in the films. Our data also suggest the possibility of formation of a low-mobility glass or gel-like layer of nanoparticles at the interface, which could play a significant role in determining T-g of the films provided. Interaction of CdSe and ZnO nanocrystals with electron-donating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and electron-withdrawing tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) has been investigated. Isothermal calorimetry shows CdSe nanocrystals interact more strongly with TCNE than TTF. Interaction of larger CdSe nanocrystals with TCNE causes a red-shift in the band-edge emission because of agglomeration, while the smaller CdSe nanocrystals, exhibiting stronger interaction with TCNE modify the optical gap of the nanocrystal. Luminescence of CdSe gets quenched sharply after addition of both TTF and TCNE. ZnO nanocrystals also exhibit luminescence quenching to lesser extent. Defect-emission of ZnO nanocrystals gets red or blue-shifted after interaction with TTF or TCNE respectively. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A combination of chemical and thermal annealing techniques has been employed to synthesize a rarely reported nanocup structure of Mn doped ZnO with good yield. Nanocup structures are obtained by thermally annealing the powder samples consisting of nanosheets, synthesized chemically at room temperature, isochronally in a furnace at 200-500 degrees C temperature range for 2 h. Strong excitonic absorption in the UV and photoluminescence (PL) emission in UV-visible regions are observed in all the samples at room temperature. The sample obtained at 300 degrees C annealing temperature exhibits strong PL emission in the UV due to near-band-edge emission along with very week defect related emissions in the visible regions. The synthesized samples have been found to be exhibiting stable optical properties for 10 months which proved the unique feature of the presented technique of synthesis of nanocup structures. CdTe thin films of 500 thickness prepared by thermal evaporation technique were analyzed for leakage current and conduction mechanisms. Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors were fabricated using these films as a dielectric. These films have many possible applications, such as passivation for infrared diodes that operate at low temperatures (80 K). Direct-current (DC) current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements were performed on these films. Furthermore, the films were subjected to thermal cycling from 300 K to 80 K and back to 300 K. Typical minimum leakage currents near zero bias at room temperature varied between 0.9 nA and 0.1 mu A, while low-temperature leakage currents were in the range of 9.5 pA to 0.5 nA, corresponding to resistivity values on the order of 10(8) a''broken vertical bar-cm and 10(10) a''broken vertical bar-cm, respectively. Well-known conduction mechanisms from the literature were utilized for fitting of measured I-V data. Our analysis indicates that the conduction mechanism in general is Ohmic for low fields < 5 x 10(4) V cm(-1), while the conduction mechanism for fields > 6 x 10(4) V cm(-1) is modified Poole-Frenkel (MPF) and Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling at room temperature. At 80 K, Schottky-type conduction dominates. A significant observation is that the film did not show any appreciable degradation in leakage current characteristics due to the thermal cycling.

We report on the substrate assisted doping of ZnO nanowires grown by a vapor transport technique. The nanowires were grown non-catalytically on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and soda lime glass (SLG). Carbon from MWCNTs and sodium from SLG diffuse into ZnO during the growth and are distributed uniformly and provide doping. An advantage associated with the technique is that no conventional external dopant source is required to obtain doped ZnO nanowires. The diameter, length and hence the aspect ratio can easily be varied by changing the growth conditions. The transport studies on both carbon and sodium doped ZnO support the p-type nature of ZnO. The p-type nature of carbon doped ZnO is stable for at least eight months.

In recent years, there has been significant effort in the synthesis of nanocrystalline spinel ferrites due to their unique properties. Among them, zinc ferrite has been widely investigated for countless applications. As traditional ferrite synthesis methods are energy- and time-intensive, there is need for a resource-effective process that can prepare ferrites quickly and efficiently without compromising material quality. We report on a novel microwave-assisted soft-chemical synthesis technique in the liquid medium for synthesis of ZnFe2O4 powder below 100 °C, within 5 min. The use of β-diketonate precursors, featuring direct metal-to-oxygen bonds in their molecular structure, not only reduces process temperature and duration sharply, but also leads to water-soluble and non-toxic by-products. As synthesized powder is annealed at 300 °C for 2 hrs in a conventional anneal (CA) schedule. An alternative procedure, a 2-min rapid anneal at 300 °C (RA) is shown to be sufficient to crystallize the ferrite particles, which show a saturation magnetization (MS) of 38 emu/g, compared with 39 emu/g for a 2-hr CA. This signifies that our process is efficient enough to reduce energy consumption by ∼85% just by altering the anneal scheme. Recognizing the criticality of anneal process to the energy budget, a more energy-efficient variation of the reaction process was developed, which obviates the need for post-synthesis annealing altogether. It is shown that the process also can be employed to deposit crystalline thin films of ferrites.

Further miniaturization of magnetic and electronic devices demands thin films of advanced nanomaterials with unique properties. Spinel ferrites have been studied extensively owing to their interesting magnetic and electrical properties coupled with stability against oxidation. Being an important ferrospinel, zinc ferrite has wide applications in the biological (MRI) and electronics (RF-CMOS) arenas. The performance of an oxide like ZnFe2O4 depends on stoichiometry (defect structure), and technological applications require thin films of high density, low porosity and controlled microstructure, which depend on the preparation process. While there are many methods for the synthesis of polycrystalline ZnFe2O4 powder, few methods exist for the deposition of its thin films, where prolonged processing at elevated temperature is not required. We report a novel, microwave-assisted, low temperature (<100°C) deposition process that is conducted in the liquid medium, developed for obtaining high quality, polycrystalline ZnFe2O4 thin films on technologically important substrates like Si(100). An environment-friendly solvent (ethanol) and non-hazardous oxide precursors (β-diketonates of Zn and Fe in 1:2 molar ratio), forming a solution together, is subjected to irradiation in a domestic microwave oven (2.45 GHz) for a few minutes, leading to reactions which result in the deposition of ZnFe2O4 films on Si (100) substrates suspended in the solution. Selected surfactants added to the reactant solution in optimum concentration can be used to control film microstructure. The nominal temperature of the irradiated solution, i.e., film deposition temperature, seldom exceeds 100°C, thus sharply lowering the thermal budget. Surface roughness and uniformity of large area depositions (50x50 mm2) are controlled by tweaking the concentration of the mother solution. Thickness of the films thus grown on Si (100) within 5 min of microwave irradiation can be as high as several microns. The present process, not requiring a vacuum system, carries a very low thermal budget and, together with a proper choice of solvents, is compatible with CMOS integration. This novel solution-based process for depositing highly resistive, adherent, smooth ferrimagnetic films on Si (100) is promising to RF engineers for the fabrication of passive circuit components. It is readily extended to a wide variety of functional oxide films.

The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. The impact of chemical treatment on the surface morphology and other physical properties of tin monosulphide (SnS) thin films have been investigated. The SnS films treated with selected organic solvents exhibited strong improvement in their crystalline-quality and considerable decrease in electrical resistivity. Particularly, the films treated with chloroform showed very low electrical resistivity of similar to 5 Omega cm and a low optical band gap of 1.81 eV as compared to untreated and treated SnS films with other chemicals. From these studies we realized that the chemical treatment of SnS films has strong impact on their surface morphology and also on other physical properties. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. TiO2 and Al2O3 are commonly used materials in optical thin films in the visible and near‐infrared wavelength region due to their high transparency and good stability. In this work, TiO2 and Al2O3 single, and nano composite thin films with different compositions were deposited on glass and silicon substrates at room temperature using a sol‐gel spin coater. The optical properties like reflectance, transmittance and refractive index have been studied using Spectrophotometer, and structural properties using X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

Electrical switching studies on amorphous Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) has been done to find their suitability for Phase Change Memory application; Bulk ingots in glassy form are prepared using conventional melt quenching technique and the thin films are coated using flash evaporation technique. Samples are found to exhibit memory type of electrical switching behavior. The switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films have been found to decrease with increase in Sn concentration. The comparatively lower switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx samples, make them suitable candidates for phase change memory applications.

In this paper, we report on the application aspect of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on flexible phynox alloy substrate. Highly crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films were deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering and were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM analysis. Also, the effective d(33) coefficient value measurement was performed. The actuator element is a circular diaphragm of phynox alloy on to which piezoelectric ZnO thin film was deposited. ZnO film deposited actuator element was firmly fixed inside a suitable concave perspex mounting designed specifically for micro actuation purpose. The actuator element was excited at different frequencies for the supply voltages of 2V, 5V and 8V. Maximum deflection of the ZnO film deposited diaphragm was measured to be 1.25 mu m at 100 Hz for the supply voltage of 8V. The developed micro actuator has the potential to be used as a micro pump for pumping nano liters to micro liters of fluids per minute for numerous biomedical and aerospace applications.

In this paper, we report a novel piezoelectric ZnO nanogenerator on flexible metal alloy substrate (Phynox alloy) for energy harvesting and sensing applications. The vertically aligned ZnO nanowires are sandwiched between Au electrodes. The aligned growth of ZnO nanowires have been successfully synthesized on Au coated metal alloy substrate by hydrothermal method at low temperature (95 +/- 1 degrees C). The as-synthesized vertically aligned ZnO nanowires were characterized using FE-SEM. Further, PMMA is spin coated over the aligned ZnO nanowires for the purpose of their long term stability. The fabricated nanogenerator is of size 30mm x 6mm. From energy harvesting point of view, the response of the nanogenerator due to finger tip impacts ranges from 0.9 V to 1.4V. Also for sensing application, the maximum output voltage response of the nanogenerator is found to be 2.86V due to stainless steel (SS) ball impact and 0.92 V due to plastic ball impact.

Flexible and thermally stable, freestanding hybrid organic/inorganic based polymer-composite films have been fabricated using a simple solution casting method. Polyvinylbutyral and amine functionalized mesoporous silica were used to synthesize the composite. An additional polyol-''tripentaerythritol''-component was also used to increase the -OH group content in the composite matrix. The moisture permeability of the composites was investigated by following a calcium degradation test protocol. This showed a reduction in the moisture permeability with the increase in functionalized silica loadings in the matrix. A reduction in permeability was observed for the composites as compared to the neat polymer film. The thermal and mechanical properties of these composites were also investigated by various techniques like thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile experiments, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was observed that these properties detonate with the increase in the functionalized silica content and hence an optimized loading is required in order to retain critical properties. This deterioration is due to the aggregation of the fillers in the matrix. Furthermore, the films were used to encapsulate P3HT (poly 3 hexyl thiophene) based organic Schottky structured diodes, and the diode characteristics under accelerated aging conditions were studied. The weathered diodes, encapsulated with composite film showed an improvement in the lifetime as compared to neat polymer film. The initial investigation of these films suggests that they can be used as a moisture barrier layer for organic electronics encapsulation application.
