Modelling Interbank Relations during the International Financial Crisis

This paper examines the effects of the current financial crisis on the correlations of four international banking stocks. We find that in the beginning of the crisis banks generally show a transition to a higher correlation followed by a dramatic decline towards the end of 2008. These findings are consistent with both traditional contagion theory and the more recent network theory of contagion. Work, risk and health: differences between immigrants and natives in Spain

We analyze the impact of working and contractual conditions, particularly exposure to job risks, on the probability of acquiring a disability. We postulate a model in which this impact is mediated by the choice of occupation, with a level of risk associated to it. We assume this choice is endogenous, and that it depends on preferences and opportunities in the labour market, both of which may differ between immigrants and natives. To test this hypothesis we use data from the Continuous Sample of Working Lives of the Spanish SS system. It contains individual, job and firm information of over a million workers, including a representative sample of immigrants. We find that risk exposure increases the probability of permanent disability by 5.3%; temporary employment also influences health. Migrant status -with differences among regions of origin- significantly affects both disability and the probability of being employed in a risky occupation. Most groups of immigrants work in riskier jobs, but have lower probability of becoming disabled. Nevertheless, our theoretical hypothesis that disability and risk are jointly determined is not valid for immigrants: i.e. for them working conditions is not a matter of choice in terms of health.

À propos de quelques fonctions des expertises judiciaires au pénal

En France, l'expert psychiatre ou psychologue est présenté dans le Code pénal comme un « technicien », disposant de compétences singulières, qui réalise un travail que le juge ne pourrait réaliser lui-même. À partir d'une recherche théorique et empirique, cet article s'intéresse aux relations juge-expert et interroge les fonctions recouvertes par les expertises psychiatriques et psychologiques en phase présentencielle au pénal, au-delà de la mission énoncée dans les textes et dans l'ordonnance de commission d'expertise. Nous sommes partis de l'hypothèse que les fonctions des expertises psychiatriques et psychologiques dépassent le cadre d'un écrit technique et d'une déposition technique en Cour d'assises tel qu'énoncé dans les textes et missions, pour recouvrir des fonctions variées et non explicitées dans le processus judicaire. Partiendo de una investigación teórica y empírica, este artículo está centrado en las relaciones juez-experto e interroga sobre las funciones cubiertas por los peritajes psiquiátricos y psicológicos en la fase pre-sentencia en lo penal, más allá de la misión enunciada en los textos y en la ordenanza de la comisión de peritaje. Nuestro punto de partida ha sido la hipótesis que las funciones de los peritajes psiquiátricos y psicológicos van más allá del marco de un escrito técnico y de una deposición técnica en el Tribunal de lo penal tal como queda enunciado en los textos y misiones, para abarcar funciones variadas sin explicitar en el proceso judicial.

OBJECTIVE: Quality assessment in consultation and liaison psychiatry (CLP) is extremely difficult and must take into account numerous factors. The general practitioner (GP) of the patients seen by CL psychiatrists seems an essential factor to be considered in evaluating CL work. However, as far as we know, no study is doing so. Therefore, we have implied the GP to assess our CL work at the hospital St-Loup-Orbe. METHOD: We put up a qualitative study consisting of semi-structured interviews with 18 GPs caring for 45 patients having been submitted to a psychiatric CL intervention. Furthermore, we invited the GPs to assesses CLP as a specialization as well as CLP practiced at St-Loup-Orbe hospital. RESULTS: Impact is judged by the GPs with regard to the total number as: highly favorable> favorable> indifferent> negative. The GPs' critiques, whether positive or negative, are highly informative. CONCLUSIONS: GPs accept favorably CLP interventions and consider them on the whole as constructive. On the other hand, they are not sufficiently considered as partners during their patients' hospital stay. Furthermore, CLP must evaluate its impact at distance from the consultation and take into account the GPs' assessments to improve CL quality.
