A simple method for calculating the asymptotic D-state observables for light nuclei is suggested. The method exploits the dominant clusters of the light nuclei. The method is applied to calculate the He-4 asymptotic D to S normalization ratio rho(alpha) and the closely related D-state parameter D2alpha. The study predicts a correlation between D2alpha and B(alpha), and between rho(alpha) and B(alpha), where B(alpha) is the binding energy of He-4. The present study yields rho(alpha) congruent-to -0.14 and D2alpha congruent-to -0.12 fm2 consistent with the correct experimental eta(d) and the binding energies of the deuteron, triton, and the alpha particle, where eta(d) is the deuteron D-state to S-state normalization ratio.

We report on a metastable light-induced volume expansion in Ge25+xGa10-xS65 glasses under irradiation with band gap (UV) light, which can result in recording of relief gratings on their surface in the case of irradiation with two interfering beams. We propose a mechanism for the expansion, which is based on the light-induced change in the polarizability of secondary (van der Waals type) bonds and the effect of this change on primary (covalent type) bonds of the glass. The effect is suggested to be due to an interference of electrons, which belong to a chalcogen atom and participate in the formation of secondary and primary bonds, respectively. We suggest that a minimum point of the Lennard-Jones potential, which corresponds to the equilibrium position of a chalcogen atom is shifted in the course of irradiation to a larger interatomic distance. This shift causes a volume expansion and allows a diffusion of chalcogen atoms into the irradiated area. We show that light-induced polymerization of the glass network is an important attribute of the light-induced volume expansion.

Dynamic light scattering measurements have been made to elucidate changes in the coil conformation of a high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) fraction when the non-ionic surfactant C(12)E(5) is present in dilute solutions. The measurements were made at 20 degrees C as functions of(a) the C(12)E(5) concentration at constant PEO concentration, (b) the PEO concentration at constant C(12)E(5) concentration, and (c) the C(12)E(5)/PEO concentration ratio. The influence of temperature on the interactions in terms of the relaxation time distributions was also examined up to the cloud point. It was found that when the C(12)E(5)/PEO weight ratio was >2 and when the temperature was >14 degrees C, the correlation functions became bimodal with well-separated components. The fast mode derives fi om individual surfactant micelles which are present in the solution at high number density. The appearance of the slow mode, which dominates the scattering, is interpreted as resulting from the formation of micellar clusters due to an excluded-volume effect when the high molar mass (M = 6 x 10(5)) PEO is added to the surfactant solution. It is shown that the micellar clusters form within the PEO coils and lead to a progressive swelling of the latter for steric reasons. The dimensions of the PEO/C(12)E(5) complex increase with increasing surfactant concentration to a value of R(H) approximate to 94 nm (R(g) approximate to 208 nm) at C-C12E5 = 3.5%. Fluorescence quenching measurements show that the average aggregation number of C(12)E(5) increases significantly on addition of the high molar mass PEG. With increasing temperature toward the cloud point the clusters increase in number density and/or become larger. The cloud point is substantially lower than that for C12E5 in water solution and is strongly dependent on the PEO concentration.

Despite their spiny nature, Aiphanes palms are popular as ornamentals. They can be grown in various soil conditions, but achieve fast, luxuriant growth in sheltered positions with plenty of water. Shaded conditions are the best when plants are young. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fruit maturation stage and light on the germination of seeds of A. aculeata. Fruits were collected at three different maturation stages: (1) yellow, (2) red, (3) collected on the ground without the fleshy mesocarp (removed by birds and insects). The fleshy mesocarp was also removed in treatments (1) and (2). All fruits were then treated with thiram and 25 seeds per plot were seeded in trays full of sand. The treatments (2) and (3) were subdivided in two other treatments: (a) 12 h photoperiod, (b) continuous darkness. The temperature was maintained at 30 degrees C. Seed germination began 34 days after sowing. After 160 days, the final germination percentage was (1) 54,67%, (2a) 61,33%, (2b) 65,33%, (3a) 38,00% and (3b) 45,33%. The best treatment was (2) independently of the light conditions.

Photosynthetic characteristics in response to irradiance were analysed in 42 populations of 33 macroalgal species by two distinct techniques (chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution). Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves based on the two techniques indicated adaptations to low irradiance reflected by low saturation values, high to moderate values of photosynthetic efficiency (alpha) and photoinhibition (beta), for Bacillariophyta and Rhodophyta, which suggests they are typically shade-adapted algae. In contrast, most species of Chlorophyta were reported as sun adapted algae, characterized by high values of I-k and low of alpha, and lack of or low photoinhibition. Cyanophyta and Xanthophyta were intermediate groups in terms of light adaptations. Photoinhibition was observed in variable degrees in all algal groups, under field and laboratory conditions, which confirms that it is not artificially induced by experimental conditions, but is rather a common and natural phenomenon of the lotic macroalgae. Low values of compensation irradiance (I-c) were found, which indicate that these algae can keep an autotrophic metabolism even under very low irradiances. High ratios (>2) of photosynthesis/respiration were found in most algae, which indicates a considerable net gain. These two physiological characteristics suggest that macroalgae may be important primary producers in lotic ecosystems. Saturation parameters (I-k and I-s) occurred in a relatively narrow range of irradiances (100-400 mumol photons m(-2) s(-1)), with some exceptions (higher in some filamentous green algae or lower in red algae). These parameters were way below the irradiances measured at collecting sites for most algae, which means that most of the available light energy was not photochemically converted via photosynthesis. Acclimation to ambient PAR was observed, as revealed by lower values of I-k and I-c and higher values of alpha and quantum yield in algae from shaded streams, and vice versa. Forms living within the boundary layer (crusts) showed responses of shade-adapted species and had the highest values of P-max, alpha and quantum yield, whereas the opposite trend was observed in gelatinous forms (colonies and. laments). These results suggests adaptation to the light regime rather than functional attributes related to the growth form.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the laser radiation (685 nm) associated with photosensitizers on viability of different species of Candida genus. Suspensions of Candida albicans, Candida dubliniensis, Candida krusei and Candida tropicalis, containing 106 viable cells per milliliter were obtained with the aid of a Neubauer's chamber. From each species, 10 samples of the cell suspension were irradiated with diode laser (685 nm) with 28 J/cm(2) in the presence of methylene blue (0.1 mg/ml), 10 samples were only treated with methylene blue, 10 samples were irradiated with laser in the absence of the dye, 10 samples were treated with the dye and irradiated with laser light and 10 samples were exposed to neither the laser light nor to the methylene blue dye. From each sample, serial dilutions of 10(-2) and 10(-3) were obtained and aliquots of 0.1 ml of each dilution were plated in duplicate on Sabouraud dextrose agar. After incubation at 37 degrees C for 48 h, the number of colony-forming units (CFU/ml) was obtained and data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Laser radiation in the presence of methylene blue reduced the number of CFU/ml in 88.6% for C. albicans, 84.8% for C. dubliniensis, 91.6% for C krusei and 82.3% for C tropicalis. Despite of this, only laser radiation or methylene blue did not reduce significantly the number of CFU/ml of Candida samples, except for C tropicalis. It could be concluded that the photo activation of methylene blue by the red laser radiation at 685 nm presented fungicide effect on all Candida species studied. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Energy transfer excited multiwavelength visible upconversion emission and white light generation is described in a single sample of PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic triply doped With Ho/Tm/Yb under single infrared laser excitation. Blue (475 nm), green (540 mn), and red (650 nm), upconversion luminescence signals are generated, and the emissions are assigned, respectively, to thulium ((1)G(4)-(3)H(6)), and holmium ((5)S(2);(5)F(4)) -> (5)I(8), (5)F(5) -> (5)I(8)) ions transitions, both excited via successive energy transfers from ytterbium ions. It is experimentally shown that with a proper combination of the rare earth ions contents, white light may be produced, with the simultaneous generation of fluorescence with controllable intensities at the wavelengths of the three primary colours in a single sample and using a single near-infrared excitation source.

Ultrafine ordered and disordered SrZrO3 powders were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The structural evolution from structural disorder to order was monitored by X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Complex cluster vacancies [ZrO5 center dot V-O(Z)] and [SrOII center dot V-O(Z)] (where V-O(Z) = V-O(X), V-O(center dot) and V-O(center dot center dot)) were proposed for disordered powders. The intense violet-blue light photoluminescence emission measured at room temperature in the disordered powders was attributed to complex cluster vacancies. High-level quantum mechanical calculations within the density functional theory framework were used to interpret the experimental results. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
