We present a simple method of forming a switchable radar cross-section (RCS) in evanescent waveguide. Here, the antenna can be selected to be matched to free space, or to act as an almost perfect reflector of incident energy via a single SPST switch located at the antenna aperture. With the aperture switch open, the antenna is matched over a measured bandwidth of 17.5%, from 2.35 to 2.8 GHz, for reflection coefficient <-10 dB, in 2.725 GHz cutoff waveguide. With the aperture switch closed, a minimum reflection coefficient of -2.5 dB across the bandwidth is observed, proving that the antenna has the capacity to be made RCS reconfigurable. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Free space transmission of an on-off modulated sinusoidal signal through a phase conjugating lens (PCL) is theoretically examined using a combined time/frequency domain approach. The on-off keyed (OOK) signal is generated by a dipole antenna located in the far-field zone of the lens. The PCL consists of a dual layer of antenna elements interconnected via phase conjugating circuitry. We demonstrate that electromagnetic interference between antenna elements creates spatially localised areas of good-quality reception and zones where the signal is significantly denigrated by interference. Next, it is shown that destructive interference and packet desynchronisation effects critically depend on bit rate. It is also shown that a circular concave lens can be used to produce high-quality signal reception in a given direction while suppressing signal reception in all other directions. The effect that the bandwidth of the phase conjugating unit has on the transmitted signal properties for the cases of high and low bit rate OOK modulation are studied and a signal quality characterisation scheme is proposed which uses cross-correlation. The results of the study yields understanding of the performance of phase conjugating arrays under OOK modulation. The work suggests a novel approach for realising a secure communication wireless system.

The accurate measurement of the permittivity, loss tangent and dielectric anisotropy DC bias dependence for two different liquid crystal (LC) materials in the frequency range 140-165 GHz is described. The electrical characteristics are obtained by curve fitting computed transmission coefficients to the experimental spectral response of a new class of electronically reconfigurable frequency selective surface. The periodic structure is designed to yield bandpass filter characteristics with and without an applied bias control voltage in order to measure the tunability of the LC material which is inserted in a 705 µm-thick cavity.

The general properties of a frequency selective surface loaded with negative impedance converter (NIC)-based active loads are discussed from a theoretical perspective. The stability problem associated with NIC circuits embedded in artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and AMC absorber applications is studied using pole-zero analysis. The requirements and constraints for achieving stable operation with enhanced bandwidth using negative capacitance as realized by a floating NIC network are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that it is nearly impossible to simultaneously implement a negative capacitor and a negative inductor to such structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present a novel antenna matching technique that uses the Imaginary Smith Chart to permit wideband matching of an evanescent open-ended waveguide antenna using a dielectric sheet air-spaced from the aperture. The fabricated antenna design is demonstrated to have a measured bandwidth of 24%, from 2.13–2.7 GHz, for reflection coefficient $qquad{<} -!!10~{rm dB}$ , with 2.725 GHz waveguide cutoff. The antenna's maximum aperture dimension is ${< 0.5}lambda_{0}$ at the upper frequency in the bandwidth and so it is suitable for use in a wide angle scanning phased array

This article describes a practical demonstration of a complete full-duplex “amplitude shift keying (ASK)” retrodirective radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver array. The interrogator incorporates a “retrodirective array (RDA)” with a dual-conversion phase conjugating architecture in order to achieve better performance than is possible with conventional RFID solutions. Here mixers phase conjugate the incoming signal and a carrier recovery circuit recovers incoming angle of arrival phase information of an encoded amplitude shift keyed signal. The resulting interrogator provides a receiver sensitivity level of -109 dBm. A four element square patch RDA gives a 3 dB automatic beam steering angle of acceptance of ±45°. When compared to an RFID system operating by conventional (non-retrodirective) means retrodirective action leads to improved range extension of up to 16 times at ±45°. Operator pointing accuracy requirements are also reduced due to automatic retrodirective self-pointing. These features significantly enhance deployment opportunities requiring long range low equivalent isotropic radiation power (EIRP) and/or RFID tagging of moving platforms. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper we extend the derivation of the modified form Snells's law that occurs when an additional phase profile is introduced at the material interface. We show that this permits electromagnetic (EM) beam steering, negative refraction and retrodirective action opportunities for such engineered surfaces even if they are immersed in a uniform dielectric. Simple expressions for the retrodirected and negatively refracted beams are derived along with the propagation conditions that occur at the boundary interface inside the critical angle range. It is also demonstrated how the transmission and reflected power levels are affected by the additional phase taper introduced at the surface.

There has been significant interest in retrodirective antennas, especially considering the wealth of applications that could be significantly enhanced, or created, by the use of such technology. There is enormous potential for retrodirective antennas where complicated automatic tracking systems would benefit from being replaced by much simpler systems. Retrodirective array technology offers one solution pathway since it can offer extremely fast tracking with relatively simple circuitry. Retrodirective or self-steering arrays are suited for low radio frequency (RF) power mobile terminal use particularly on or between un-stabilised vehicles. In this type of operational scenario, high degrees of relative movement are expected, and power consumption and weight of the antenna must be kept to a minimum. In this study, the authors give a brief historical review of basic retrodirective technology and elaborate on some recent developments at Queens University of Belfast associated with retrodirective antenna technology in relation to, two-way communications, ultrafast RADAR, microwave imaging, spatial power transmission, mitigation of multipath effects and spatial encryption.

Practical demonstration of the operational advantages gained through the use of a co-operating retrodirective array (RDA) basestation and Van Atta node arrangements is discussed. The system exploits a number of inherent RDA features to provide analogue real time multifunctional operation at low physical complexity. An active dual-conversion four element RDA is used as the power distribution source (basestation) while simultaneously achieving a receive sensitivity level of ??109 dBm and 3 dB automatic beam steering angle of ??45??. When mobile units are each equipped with a semi-passive four element Van Atta array, it is shown mobile device orientation issues are mitigated and optimal energy transfer can occur because of automatic beam formation resulting from retrodirective self-pointing action. We show that operation in multipath rich environments with or without line of sight acts to reduce average power density limits in the operating volume with high energy density occurring at mobile nodes sites only. The system described can be used as a full duplex ASK communications link, or, as a means for remote node charging by wireless means, thereby enhancing deployment opportunities between unstabilised moving platforms.

The authors describe a reflection amplifier adapted to have both a reflection and a transmission port. The amplifier uses a single silicon bipolar transistor and demonstrates a reflection gain of 13 dB, transmission gain of 10 dB and 3.4 dB noise figure at 5.25 GHz. The added feature of transmission gain in the reflection amplifier permits practical implementation of full duplex microwave radiofrequency indentification (RFID) tag operation. By using a simple subcarrier modulation scheme full duplex RFID operation utilising this amplifier is demonstrated. These results indicate that for 27 dBm (0.5 W) effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) transmit power it should be possible to obtain approximately 8 m downlink range and 25 m uplink range

This article describes by means of a simple model how signal recombination effects behave under the influence of phase conjugating retrodirective array (RDA) technology. A two-ray ground reflection model is used to predict the operational advantages of RDA technology in multipath rich environments. The simulation results show that advantageous signal recombination occurs due to automatic self-phasing. As the number of elements in the RDA increases, the fading effect normally observed due to out of phase multipath signal is mitigated to the extent that the system approaches that of one operating in a free space environment. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We analyze the effect of different pulse shaping filters on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless local area network (LAN) systems in this paper. In particular, the performances of the square root raised cosine (RRC) pulses with different rolloff factors are evaluated and compared. This work provides some guidances on how to choose RRC pulses in practical WLAN systems, e.g., the selection of rolloff factor, truncation length, oversampling rate, quantization levels, etc.

In this paper we give first account of a simple analysis tool for modeling temporal compression for automatic mitigation of multipath induced intersymbol interference through the use of active phase conjugation (APC) technique. The temporal compression characteristics of an APC system is analyzed using a simple discrete channel model, and numerical results are provided to justify the theoretical findings.

Conventional approaches of digital modulation schemes make use of amplitude, frequency and/or phase as modulation characteristic to transmit data. In this paper, we exploit circular polarization (CP) of the propagating electromagnetic carrier as modulation attribute which is a novel concept in digital communications. The requirement of antenna alignment to maximize received power is eliminated for CP signals and these are not affected by linearly polarized jamming signals. The work presents the concept of Circular Polarization Modulation for 2, 4 and 8 states of carrier and refers them as binary circular polarization modulation (BCPM), quaternary circular polarization modulation (QCPM) and 8-state circular polarization modulation (8CPM) respectively. Issues of modulation, demodulation, 3D symbol constellations and 3D propagating waveforms for the proposed modulation schemes are presented and analyzed in the presence of channel effects, and they are shown to have the same bit error performance in the presence of AWGN compared with conventional schemes while provide 3dB gain in the flat Rayleigh fading channel.
