There is increasing evidence that the preceding Holocene climate was as unstable as the last glacial period, although variations occurred at much lower amplitudes. However, low-latitude climate records that confirm this variability are sparse. Here we present a radiocarbon-dated Holocene marine record from the tropical western Atlantic. Aragonite dissolution derived from the degree of preservation of the pteropod Limacina inflata records changes in the corrosiveness of the bottom water at the core site due to the changing influence of northern versus southern water masses. The delta18O difference between the shallow-living planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer and the deep-living Globorotalia tumida is used as proxy for changes in the vertical stratification of the surface water, hence the trade wind strength at this latitude. We compared our data to high-latitude records of the North Atlantic region. A good agreement is found between the aragonite dissolution and the strength in the Island-Scotland Overflow Water, which contributes significantly to the North Atlantic Deep Water. This suggests that large-scale variations in the Atlantic thermohaline circulation occurred throughout the Holocene. Concurrently, the comparison of our Delta delta18O with the GISP2 glaciochemical records points to global Holocene atmospheric reorganizations seen in both the tropics and high northern latitudes.

In the context of the KErguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study (KEOPS, 19 January-13 February 2005), particle dynamics were investigated using thorium isotope measurements over and off the Kerguelen plateau. Dissolved and particulate 230Th and 232Th samples were collected at nine stations. Dissolved excess 230Th concentrations (230Thxs) vary from 0.5 to 20.8 fg/kg and particulate 230Thxs concentrations from 0.1 to 10.0 fg/kg. Dissolved and particulate 232Th concentration ranges are 16.8-450.2 pg/kg and 3.8-502.8 pg/kg, respectively. The 230Thxs concentrations increase linearly with depth down to the bottom at most of the plateau stations and down to 1000 m at the off-plateau stations. This linear trend is observed down to the bottom (1550 m) at Kerfix, the open-ocean "upstream" station located west of the Kerguelen plateau. A simple reversible scavenging model applied to these data allowed the estimation of adsorption rate constant (k1~=0.2-0.8 per year), desorption rate constant (k-1~=1-8 per year) and partition coefficients (average K=0.16±0.07). Calculated particle settling velocities S deduced from this simple model are ca. 500 m/year at most of the plateau stations and 800 m/year at all the off-plateau stations. The plateau settling velocities are relatively low for such a productive site, compared to the surrounding HNLC areas. The difference might reflect the fact that lateral advection is neglected in this model. Taking this advection into account allows the reconstruction of the observed 230Thxs linear distributions, but only if faster settling velocities are considered. This implies that the 1D model strongly underestimates the settling velocity of the particles. In the deep layers, the occurrence of intense boundary scavenging along the escarpment due to bottom sediment re-suspension and interaction with a nepheloid layer, yielding a removal of ?50% of the Th stock along the northwestward transect, is suggested.

The stratotype section for the base of the Miocene is at a reversed (below) to normal (above) magnetic transition that is claimed to represent magnetic chron C6Cn.2n (o). Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 522 is the only location we are aware of that unambiguously records the three normal events of C6Cn. We have quantitatively determined the range of the short-lived nannofossil Sphenolithus delphix and the lower limit of S. disbelemnos in DSDP Holes 522 and 522A in order to calibrate their precise relationship to the magnetostratigraphy and to confirm the completeness of the record at this site. Astronomical tuning of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 926, 928, and 929 shows that S. disbelemnos appears at 22.67 Ma and that the entire range of S. delphix is from about 22.98 Ma to 23.24 Ma. Using these ages, linear interpolation in DSDP Site 522 suggests that the age of C6Cn.2n (o) and of the Oligocene-Miocene boundary is 22.92+/-0.04 Ma. Our value, conservatively expressed as 22.9+/-0.1 Ma, is 0.9 m.y. younger than the currently accepted age of the Oligocene-Miocene boundary and of C6Cn.2n (o), which was assigned an age of 23.8 Ma, based on an estimate of 23.8+/-1 Ma for the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. The bulk-sediment carbon isotope data from DSDP Site 522 is correlated to the record from benthic foraminifera at ODP Site 929 to refine the calibration of magnetic reversals from C6Cn.1n (o) to C7n.2n (o) at DSDP Site 522 on the astronomical time scale.
