The practice of regular exercise is indicated to prevent some motility disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract, such as constipation, during aging. The motility alterations are intimately linked with its innervations. The goal of this study is to determine whether a program of exercise (running on the treadmill), during 6 months, has effects in the myenteric neurons (NADH- and NADPH-diaphorase stained neurons) in the colon of rats during aging. Male Wister rats 6 months (adult) and 12 months (middle-aged) old were divided into 3 different groups: AS (adult sedentary), MS (middle-aged sedentary) and MT (middle-aged submitted to physical activity). The aging did not cause a decline significant (p > 0.05) of the number of NADH-diaphorase stained neurons in sedentary rats (AS vs. MS group). In contrast, a decline of 3 1% was observed to NADPH-diaphorase stained neurons. Thus, animals that underwent physical activity (AS vs. MT group) rescued neurons from degeneration caused by aging (total number, density and profile of neurons did not change with age - NADH-diaphorase method). On the other hand, physical activity augmented the decline of NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons (total number, density and profile of neurons decreased). Collectively, the results show that exercise inhibits age-related decline of myenteric neurons however, exercise augments the decline of neurons with inhibitory activity (nitric oxide) in the colon of the rats. We study the existence of transit we exchange transformations with flips defined on the unit circle S(1). We provide a complete answer to the question of whether there exists a transitive exchange transformation of S(1) defined on a subintervals and having f flips.

Nasal mucociliary system is the first line of defense of the upper airways and may be affected acutely by exposure to particulate matter (PM) from biomass burning. Several epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a consistent association between levels of air pollution from biomass burning with increases in hospitalization for respiratory diseases and mortality. To determine the acute effects of exposure to particulate matter from biomass burning in nasal mucociliary transport by saccharin transit time (STT) test, we studied thirty-three non-smokers and twelve light smokers sugarcane cutters in two periods: pre-harvest season and 4 h after harvest at the first day after biomass burning. Lung function, exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), nasal symptoms questionnaire and mucociliary clearance (MC) were assessed. Exhaled CO was increased in smokers compared to non-smokers but did not change significantly after harvest. In contrast, SIT was similar between smokers and non-smokers and decreased significantly after harvest in both groups (p < 0.001). Exposure to PM from biomass burning did not influence nasal symptoms. Our results suggest that acute exposure to particulate matter from sugarcane burned affects mucociliary clearance in smokers and non-smokers workers in the absence of symptoms. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Skiing and snowboarding is a fairly expensive activity for participant and one in which the industry as a whole makes handsome profits. In the 2005/06 season, resorts in the Northeast reported an average gross revenue of $18.5 million. (NSAA) With the current weather phenomenon of El Nino, however, resorts in New England especially, have been suffering economically. The gross revenue in New England in the ’05/’06 season was down 4% from the previous year, likely due to the fact the total snowfall declined by 16%. (NSAA) Much of this loss in revenue came during the Christmas to New Years vacation period. In the 2007 season, most mountains were less than half-opened during this peak week and the number of skiers and riders was especially low. With such a large decrease in profits, it is likely that many people will soon be affected (if they have not already been), including local employees. This project, therefore, seeks to analyze the impact that the resorts have on the local economies in order to determine the potential problems the changing snowfall patterns could have on locals’ well-being. It is hypothesized that there will be a strong correlation between the proximity of a community to a resort and the relative economic prosperity of that community; meaning that the ski industry is a pivotal part of their income and livelihood.
