A systematic study of the ionization of atomic hydrogen by electron impact from 0.3 eV to a few eV above the ionization threshold has been carried out using a semiclassical-quantal calculation. Differential and integrated cross sections are presented at 0.3 eV above the energy threshold. Triple- differential cross sections (TDCS) are presented at constant theta(12) geometry where theta(12)=180degrees and 150degrees. Good agreement is achieved with the measurement [Roder, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1666 (1997)] and calculations based on exterior complex scaling at 2 eV and 4 eV above threshold. Results of triple-differential cross sections are also presented at 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 eV above threshold at both theta(12)=180degrees and 150degrees. At theta(12)=180degrees the small local maximum in the TDCS around theta(1)=90degrees reported by Pan and Starace [Phys. Rev. A 45, 4588 (1992)] at 0.5 eV above threshold is not observed in our calculation at energies down to 0.3 eV above threshold. The shape of our double differential cross sections seems to disagree qualitatively with the available calculations as we found two local maxima around 15degrees and 165degrees in our calculation. Single differential cross sections in our formulation appear naturally as a function of total excess energy E and, therefore, constant for all combinations of individual electron energies E-1 and E- 2 with E=E-1+E-2. Total ionization cross sections are also compared with measurement and available theoretical calculations and found to be in reasonably good agreement up to 10 eV above ionization threshold.

In 'Charge transfer from the negative-energy continuum: alternative mechanism for pair production in relativistic atomic collisions', Eichler (1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 3653) proposes an alternative mechanism for capture by pair production, and from it derives an analytic expression for the total cross section with a surprisingly strong energy dependence. We show that, in fact, there is no alternative mechanism; rather the above mechanism may be more transparently viewed as an ionization-like transition in one centre with inclusion of continuum distortion by the second centre. We further show that to Centre the initial and final states on the target and projectile leads to confusion in the momentum transfer vectors, and hence, respectively that the alleged high-energy behaviour is erroneous.

Dielectronic recombination (DR) has been studied in highly charged He-like Ti ions using an electron beam ion trap. X-rays emitted from radiative recombination (RR) and DR were observed as the electron beam energy was scanned through the resonances. Differential DR resonant strengths were determined by normalizing the DR x-ray intensity to the RR intensity using theoretical RR cross sections. KLn (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonant strengths were determined for He-like Ti ions. The differential resonant strengths were calibrated without reference to any theoretical DR calculations while the electron energy scale was derived with reference to the well-known energy for ionization of the He-like and H-like ions from the ground state. Calibration in this way facilitates a more exacting comparison between theory and experiment than has been reported previously. To facilitate this comparison, total and differential theoretical resonance strengths were calculated. These calculations were found to be in good agreement with the measured results.

We present first-principles calculations for a number of metals adsorbed on several different metallic substrates. Some of these systems are very relevant in electrochemistry, especially in the field of underpotential deposition phenomena. The present studies reveal the existence of a relationship between the excess binding energy and the surface energy difference between substrate and adsorbate. Comparisons with experimental underpotential shifts show that excess binding energies are systematically underestimated. By analyzing experimental information on different systems, we conclude that this discrepancy between our vacuum calculations and experiments carried out in an electrolytic solution is likely to be due to anion adsorption and/or solvent effects.

Resting metabolic rates at thermoneutral (RMRts) are unexpectedly variable. One explanation is that high RMRts intrinsically potentiate a greater total daily energy expenditure (DEE), but recent work has suggested that DEE is extrinsically defined by the environment, which independently affects RMRt. This extrinsic effect could occur because expenditure is forced upwards in poor habitats or enabled to rise in good habitats. We provide here an intraspecific test for an association between RMRt and DEE that separates intrinsic from extrinsic effects and forcing from enabling effects. We measured the DEE and RMRt of 75 free-living short-tailed field voles at two time points in late winter. Across all sites, there was a positive link between individual variation in RMRt and DEE. This correlation, however, emerged only because of an effect across sites, rather than because of an intrinsic association within sites. We defined site quality from the survivorship of voles at the sites and the time at which they commenced breeding in spring. The associations between DEE/RMRt and site quality suggested that in February voles in poorer sites had higher energy demands, indicating that DEE was forced upwards, but in March the opposite was true, with higher demands in good sites, indicating that high expenditure was enabled. These data show that daily energy demands are extrinsically defined, with a link to RMRt that is secondary or independent. Both forcing and enabling effects of the environment may pertain at different times of year.

Social tariffs are, along with transfer payments and energy efficiency measures, an instrument to alleviate energy poverty. The name of the Spanish social tariff is “bono social”, and it was established in 2009. To qualify for bono social, the electricity consumer should meet any of the socioeconomic requirements stipulated by law and contract the electricity supply with a “comercializadora de referencia”, companies that are required to offer the bono social by law.Renewable energy cooperatives, a recent phenomenon in Spain, are not comercializadoras de referencia, so they are not obliged to offer the bono social. This does not mean there are no cooperative members at risk of energy poverty or vulnerable consumers. This study has two objectives. The first is to sketch the socioeconomic profile of members of the renewable energy cooperatives. The second is to analyze if these members are entitled to the bono social, or would be to other subsidized prices with different requirements to those of the bono social. For this purpose, we conducted a survey to members of the largest renewable energy cooperative in Spain, Som Energia. The results show that the members of renewable energy cooperatives are exposed to energy poverty risk, although its reach depends on the definition of vulnerable consumer.

The two-electron QED contributions to the ground-state binding energy of Kr34+ ions have been determined in two independent experiments performed with electron beam ion traps (EBIT) in Heidelberg (HD) and Tokyo (BT, Belfast-Tokyo collaboration). X rays arising from radiative recombination (RR) of free electrons to the ground state of initially bare Kr36+ and hydrogenlike Kr35+ ions were observed as a function of the interacting electron energy. The K edge absorption by thin Eu and W foils provided fixed photon energy references used to measure the difference in binding energy Delta E-2e between the H- and He-like Kr ions (Kr35+ and Kr34+, respectively). The two values agree well, yielding a final result of Delta E-2e=641.8 +/- 1.7 eV, confirming recent results of rigorous QED calculations. This accuracy is just of the order required to access screened radiative QED contributions.

Aims. In this paper we report calculations for energy levels, radiative rates, and excitation rates for transitions in O IV. Methods. The grasp (general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package) and FAC (flexible atomic code) were adopted for calculating energy levels and radiative rates, and the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) used to determine the excitation rates. Results. Oscillator strengths and radiative rates are reported for all E1, E2, M1, and M2 transitions among the lowest 75 levels of O IV. Additionally, lifetimes are reported for all levels and comparisons made with those available in the literature. Finally, effective collision strengths are reported for all transitions over a wide temperature range below 106 K. Comparisons are made with earlier results and the accuracy of the data is assessed.

Energy levels and radiative rates for electric dipole (E1) transitions among the lowest 141 levels of the (IS2 2s(2) 2P(6)) 3l(2) , 3l3l', and 3l4l configurations of Fe XV, Co XVI, and Ni XVII are calculated through the CIV3 code using extensive configuration-interact ion (CI) wavefunctions. The important relativistic effects are included through the Breit-Pauli approximation. In order to keep the calculated energy splittings close to the experimental values, we have made small adjustments to the diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian matrices. The energy levels, including their orderings, are in excellent agreement with the available experimental results for all three ions. However, experimental energies are only available for a few levels. Since mixing among some levels is found to be very strong, it becomes difficult to identify these uniquely. Additionally, some discrepancies with other theoretical work (particularly for Ni XVII) are very large. Therefore, in order to confirm the level ordering as well as to assess the accuracy of energy levels and radiative rates, we have performed two other independent calculations using the GRASP and FAC codes. These codes are fully relativistic, but the CI in the calculations is limited to the basic (minimum) configurations only. This enables us to assess the importance of including elaborate Cl for moderately charged ions. Additionally, we report results for electric quadrupole (E2), magnetic dipole (MI), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) transitions, and list lifetimes for all levels. Comparisons are made with other available experimental and theoretical results, and the accuracy of the present results is assessed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We present experimental results on benchmark problems in 3D cubic lattice structures with the Miyazawa-Jernigan energy function for two local search procedures that utilise the pull-move set: (i) population-based local search (PLS) that traverses the energy landscape with greedy steps towards (potential) local minima followed by upward steps up to a certain level of the objective function; (ii) simulated annealing with a logarithmic cooling schedule (LSA). The parameter settings for PLS are derived from short LSA-runs executed in pre-processing and the procedure utilises tabu lists generated for each member of the population. In terms of the total number of energy function evaluations both methods perform equally well, however. PLS has the potential of being parallelised with an expected speed-up in the region of the population size. Furthermore, both methods require a significant smaller number of function evaluations when compared to Monte Carlo simulations with kink-jump moves. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have measured the two-electron contribution of the ground state energy of helium-like argon ions using an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). A two-dimensional map was measured showing the intensity of x-rays from the trap passing through a krypton-filled absorption cell. The independent axes of this map were electron beam energy and x-ray energy. From this map, we deduced the two-electron contribution of the ground state of helium-like argon. This experimentally determined Value (312.4 +/- 9.5 eV) was found to be in good agreement with our calculated values (about 303.35 eV) and previous calculations of the same quantity. Based on these measurements, we have shown that a ten-day absorption spectroscopy run with a super-EBIT should be sufficient to provide a new benchmark value for the two-electron contribution to the ground state of helium-like krypton. Such a measurement would then constitute a test of quantum electrodynamics to second order.

Using the semi-empirical embedded-atom method, the structure of small copper clusters on Au(111) surfaces has been investigated both by static and dynamic calculations. By varying the size of roughly circular clusters, the edge energy per atom is obtained; it agrees quite well with estimates based on experimental results. Small three-dimensional clusters tend to have the shape of a pyramid, whose sides are oriented in the directions of small surface energy. The presence of a cluster is found to distort the underlying lattice of adsorbed copper atoms. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
