The project aims at advancing the state of the art in the use of context information for classification of image and video data. The use of context in the classification of images has been showed of great importance to improve the performance of actual object recognition systems. In our project we proposed the concept of Multi-scale Feature Labels as a general and compact method to exploit the local and global context. The feature extraction from the discriminative probability or classification confidence label field is of great novelty. Moreover the use of a multi-scale representation of the feature labels lead to a compact and efficient description of the context. The goal of the project has been also to provide a general-purpose method and prove its suitability in different image/video analysis problem. The two-year project generated 5 journal publications (plus 2 under submission), 10 conference publications (plus 2 under submission) and one patent (plus 1 pending). Of these publications, a relevant number make use of the main result of this project to improve the results in detection and/or segmentation of objects.

Biologicals are now fully part of our daily therapeutic strategies. However, even if their high specificity seems to induce less risk compared to older or classical immunosuppressive drugs, there are not harmless especially regarding infectious but also immunological and allergic issues. Recent attempts to better characterize the different types of reactions to biologicals should be reported, allowing us better understanding of the risk to maintain these therapies or defining how to improve the methods to use them.

Richer and healthier agents tend to hold riskier portfolios and spend proportionally less on health expenditures. Potential explanations include health and wealth effects on preferences, expected longevity or disposable total wealth. Using HRS data, we perform a structural estimation of a dynamic model of consumption, portfolio and health expenditure choices with recursive utility, as well as health-dependent income and mortality risk. Our estimates of the deep parameters highlight the importance of health capital, mortality risk control, convex health and mortality adjustment costs and binding liquidity constraints to rationalize the stylized facts. They also provide new perspectives on expected longevity and on the values of life and health.

To date, state-of-the-art seismic material parameter estimates from multi-component sea-bed seismic data are based on the assumption that the sea-bed consists of a fully elastic half-space. In reality, however, the shallow sea-bed generally consists of soft, unconsolidated sediments that are characterized by strong to very strong seismic attenuation. To explore the potential implications, we apply a state-of-the-art elastic decomposition algorithm to synthetic data for a range of canonical sea-bed models consisting of a viscoelastic half-space of varying attenuation. We find that in the presence of strong seismic attenuation, as quantified by Q-values of 10 or less, significant errors arise in the conventional elastic estimation of seismic properties. Tests on synthetic data indicate that these errors can be largely avoided by accounting for the inherent attenuation of the seafloor when estimating the seismic parameters. This can be achieved by replacing the real-valued expressions for the elastic moduli in the governing equations in the parameter estimation by their complex-valued viscoelastic equivalents. The practical application of our parameter procedure yields realistic estimates of the elastic seismic material properties of the shallow sea-bed, while the corresponding Q-estimates seem to be biased towards too low values, particularly for S-waves. Given that the estimation of inelastic material parameters is notoriously difficult, particularly in the immediate vicinity of the sea-bed, this is expected to be of interest and importance for civil and ocean engineering purposes.

The recent availability of the chicken genome sequence poses the question of whether there are human protein-coding genes conserved in chicken that are currently not included in the human gene catalog. Here, we show, using comparative gene finding followed by experimental verification of exon pairs by RT–PCR, that the addition to the multi-exonic subset of this catalog could be as little as 0.2%, suggesting that we may be closing in on the human gene set. Our protocol, however, has two shortcomings: (i) the bioinformatic screening of the predicted genes, applied to filter out false positives, cannot handle intronless genes; and (ii) the experimental verification could fail to identify expression at a specific developmental time. This highlights the importance of developing methods that could provide a reliable estimate of the number of these two types of genes.

Copy number variants contribute extensively to inter-individual genomic differences, but little is known about their inter-population variability and diversity. In a previous study (Bosch et al., 2007; 16:2572-2582), we reported that the primate-specific gene family FAM90A, which accounts for as many as 25 members in the human reference assembly, has expanded the number of FAM90A clusters across the hominoid lineage. Here we examined the copy number variability of FAM90A genes in 260 HapMap samples of European, African, and Asian ancestry, and showed significant inter-population differences (p<0.0001). Based on the recent study of Stranger et al. (2007; 315:848-853), we also explored the correlation between copy number variability and expression levels of the FAM90A gene family. Despite the high genomic variability, we found a low correlation between FAM90A copy number and expression levels, which could be due to the action of independent trans-acting factors. Our results show that FAM90A is highly variable in copy number between individuals and between populations. However, this variability has little impact on gene expression levels, thus highlighting the importance of genomic variability for genes located in regions containing segmental duplications.

We characterize the capacity-achieving input covariance for multi-antenna channels known instantaneously at the receiver and in distribution at the transmitter. Our characterization, valid for arbitrary numbers of antennas, encompasses both the eigenvectors and the eigenvalues. The eigenvectors are found for zero-mean channels with arbitrary fading profiles and a wide range of correlation and keyhole structures. For the eigenvalues, in turn, we present necessary and sufficient conditions as well as an iterative algorithm that exhibits remarkable properties: universal applicability, robustness and rapid convergence. In addition, we identify channel structures for which an isotropic input achieves capacity.

ABSTRACT Upregulation of the Major Facilitator transporter gene MDR1 (Multi_drug Resistance 1) is one of the mechanisms observed in Candida albicans clinical isolates developing resistance to azole antifungal agents. To better understand this phenomenon, the cis-acting regulatory elements present in a modulatable reporter system under the control of the MDR1 promoter were characterized. In an azole-susceptible strain, transcription of this reporter is transiently upregulated in response to either benomyl or H2O2, whereas its expression is constitutively high in an azole-resistant strain (FR2). Two cis-acting regulatory elements, that are necessary and sufficient to convey the same transcriptional responses to a heterologous promoter (CDR2), were identified within the MDR1promoter. The first element, called BRE (for Benomyl Response Element, -296 to -260 with respect to the ATG start codon), is required for benomyl-dependent MDR1 upregulation and for constitutive high expression of MDR1 in FR2. The second element, termed HRE (for H2O2 Response Element, -561 to -520), is required for H2O2-dependent MDR1 upregulation, but is dispensable for constitutive high expression. Two potential binding sites (TTAG/CTAA) for the blip transcription factor Cap1p lie within the HRE. Moreover, inactivation of CAP1 abolished the transient response to H2O2 and diminished significantly the transient response to benomyl. Cap1p, which has been previously implicated in cellular responses to oxidative stress, may thus play a transacting and positive regulatory role in benomyl- and H2O2-dependent transcription of MDR1. However, it is not the only transcription factor involved in the response of MDR1 to benomyl. A minimal BRE element (-290 to -273) that is sufficient to detect in vitro sequence-specific binding of protein complexes in crude extracts prepared from C. albicans was also delimited. Genome-wide transcript profiling analyses undertaken with a matched pair of clinical isolates, one of which being azole-resistant and upregulating MDR1, and with an azole-susceptible strain exposed to benomyl, revealed that genes specifically upregulated by benomyl harbour in their promoters Cap1p binding site(s). This strengthened the idea that Cap1p plays a role in benomyl-dependent upregulation of MDR1. BRE-like sequences were also identified in several genes co-regulated with MDR1 in both conditions, which was consistent with the involvement of the BRE in both processes. A set of 147 mutants lacking a single transcription factor gene was next screened for loss of MDR1response to benomyl. Unfortunately, none of the tested mutants showed a loss of benomyl-dependent MDR1 upregulation. Nevertheless, a significant diminution of the response was observed in the mutants in which the MADS-box transcription factor Mcm1p and the C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor orf19.13374p were inactivated, suggesting that Mcm1p and orf19.13374p are involved in MDR1response to benomyl. Interestingly, the BRE contains a perfect match to the binding consensus of Mcm1p, raising the possibility that MDR1may be a direct target of this transcriptional activator. In conclusion, while the identity of the trans-acting factors that bind to the BRE and HRE remains to be confirmed, the tools we have developed during characterization of the cis-acting elements of the MDR1promoter should now serve to elucidate the nature of the components that modulate its activity.
